Book excerpt: Chronic illness and developmental disabilities affect a significant portion of the pediatric population. For each child who suffers with a disabling condition there are frequently one or more brothers and sisters in the home who are also affected by their sibling's illness. Previous research has provided equivocal results regarding how a child's emotional adjustment is impacted by the presence of a disabled sibling, although the bulk of research points to a sibling of a disabled child being at an increased risk for negative adjustment.This study investigated the adjustment of 62 siblings of children with disabilities. The diagnosis of the children with disabilities included (a) Mental Retardation, (b) Autism/Pervasive Developmental Disorder, (c) physical illness, and (d) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder/Learning Disabled. Using archival data collected through a Sibling Support Program, analysis was conducted on subjects' scores on the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), Revised Children's Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS), and the Self-Perception Profile for Children (SPPC). Results were different than what was expected and showed either no differences in adjustment or positive findings.Positive findings were indicated in that, siblings of children with disabilities showed significantly better global self-worth, higher perceptions of their academic abilities, and a more positive view of their physical appearance, when compared to normative samples. These findings were especially true for girls. It was also determined that female siblings of children with disabilities reported less anxiety than normative samples.Negative adjustment was indicated in that a higher percentage of subjects than normally expected reported clinically significant depressive symptoms and boys showed higher levels of worry/oversensitivity on the RCMAS.Although no difference in adjustment scores was evident when comparisons were made between siblings of children with Autism/PDD and other disability groups, when compared to normative samples, siblings of Autistic and physically ill children scored higher in the areas of Scholastic Competence and Physical Appearance. Additionally in most areas of adjustment birth order did not appear to affect sibling scores, however within group analysis revealed that older siblings of disabled children fared better than younger siblings of disabled children in the areas of Global Self-Worth and Physical Appearance.
