Book excerpt: A SPIRITUAL UPLIFTING is a collection of experiences, encouragement and inspiration that helped me to be who I am today. A true believer and woman of God. To show others that everyday is not sunshine but that God delivers us through it all. One thing I realized in my belief that God answers all prayers. Sometimes it's YES what we all want to hear. Sometimes it's NO to protect us from forces we can't see. Sometimes it's WAIT you can't handle it right now. My poems are intended to uplift, elevate and console the mind. To remind those reading them there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Trouble comes to make us stronger. We were never promised there wouldn't be trials and tribulations. But, we were promised that we are not alone or forsaken. Our heavenly father always has a ram in the bush. In these contents there is something encouraging and inspiring for everyone. Even those whose lives have been sweeter (easier) than others. Prayerfully you will uplift someone else. Within are my truths, some of my life experiences. Along with the assurance that life is an awesome gift. No matter what one might face. There have been good people and good times in my life. There have been some not so good people and times. We can one day look back on the good and tough times smile and be thankful for the experiences that helped us realize our purpose in life. I inspire you yo stay positive to pray your way through. Laugh when you feel like crying. To put your trust and faith in God not in man. Know that God has all power in his hands. "I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you. Plans to give you hope and a future". Jeremiah 29:11 So relax, enjoy and allow your soul to be soothed. Life is worth the living.

The various uplifted inhabitants of Garth must battle their overlords or face ultimate extinction. At stake is the existence of Terran society and Earth, and the fate of the entire Five Galaxies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Souls of Black Folks examines the impact of black religious culture in shaping the ethical values and sociopolitical condition of U.S. blacks. The book reviews the nexus of theological traditions and historical factors that have formed black churches as environments where preachers serve as the moral compass for black churchgoers. For the Souls of Black Folks builds upon the work of sociologist W. E. B. Du Bois, who highlighted the presence of a double consciousness in the collective psyche of blacks stemming from racial oppression. The book explores the ways in which that double consciousness, often reflected in black preaching, socializes black Christians to subjugate their own moral authority to that of black preachers. The central argument is that this socialization to submit to preachers greatly underserves black churchgoers in developing and exercising their own power and authority as social agents, and thus significantly impedes the full sociopolitical liberation of all blacks. The book offers important new preaching strategies that more effectively facilitate the empowerment of blacks as critical agents of social transformation and healing in the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: Part of the American Literatures Initiative Series From the patricians of the early republic to post-Reconstruction racial scientists, from fin de siècle progressivist social reformers to post-war sociologists, character, that curiously formable yet equally formidable “stuff,” has had a long and checkered history giving shape to the American national identity. Bodies of Reform reconceives this pivotal category of nineteenth-century literature and culture by charting the development of the concept of “character” in the fictional genres, social reform movements, and political cultures of the United States from the mid-nineteenth to the early-twentieth century. By reading novelists such as Herman Melville, Mark Twain, Pauline Hopkins, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman alongside a diverse collection of texts concerned with the mission of building character, including child-rearing guides, muscle-building magazines, libel and naturalization law, Scout handbooks, and success manuals, James B. Salazar uncovers how the cultural practices of representing character operated in tandem with the character-building strategies of social reformers. His innovative reading of this archive offers a radical revision of this defining category in U.S. literature and culture, arguing that character was the keystone of a cultural politics of embodiment, a politics that played a critical role in determining-and contesting-the social mobility, political authority, and cultural meaning of the raced and gendered body.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does it take to do more with less? How can you do better than before, or better than others? How do you turn losses into wins, or near-bankruptcy into strong profitability, or abject failure into stellar success? The power of uplift enables any organization to do more with less, beat the competition, and perform better than ever. Leaders who uplift their employees' passions, intellects, and commitments produce remarkable results. Based on original research from a seven-year global study, Uplifting Leadership reveals how leaders from diverse organizations inspired and uplifted their teams' performance. Distilling the six common characteristics of leaders at high-performing organizations across business, sports, and education, authors Andy Hargreaves, Alan Boyle, and Alma Harris explore the nature of uplift, its impact on performance, and the ways to achieve it within and beyond an organization's walls, revealing how leaders: Identify and articulate an inspiring dream that is coherently connected to the best of what the organization has been before Pursue that dream at a sustainable pace without squandering resources, incurring excessive debt, or burning people out Forge paths of innovation and improvement that others have overlooked or rejected Monitor progress by using metrics and indicators in a mindful and meaningful way Build teams that naturally pull people into change rather than pushing them through it Featuring case studies of organizations as diverse as Shoebuy.com, Fiat, Dogfish Head Craft Brewery, Marks & Spencer, Cricket Australia, Burnley Football Club, and the Vancouver Giants, as well as world-leading educational systems, Uplifting Leadership provides tools for leaders to incorporate these performance-driving strategies into their own. For leaders who want their people to try harder, transform what they do, reach for a higher purpose, and stay resolute and resilient when opposing forces threaten to defeat them, Uplifting Leadership provides a path to better performance across any organization.

Book excerpt: Building on the success of the first edition, an engaging and reader-friendly work on complex ideas, Introducing Architectural Theory: Expanding the Disciplinary Debate, broadens the range of themes, voices, and geographies represented to provide a more comprehensive and contemporary theory book. This book presents major discourses in architectural theory and design in a debate-like format, integrating a series of edited texts across architectural history with context and newly written commentaries by the authors. This new edition has been fully revised, updated, and expanded to include long-standing debates, such as simplicity vs. complexity or the relationship between form and function, as well as newer discussions on innovation, globalization, and social equity. Authors Smith and Guitart provide a comprehensive means and conceptual framework for readers to compare multiple points of view. The chapter structure, discussion questions, and additional resources allow teachers to facilitate in-class discussions and writing assignments. This book remains the most accessible architectural theory textbook, written for beginning architecture students and those outside the discipline. Its reflective and critical approach will equally engage the minds of upper-level students and experts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reading Scripture is a spiritual practice at the very heart of the Christian faith. But how is it possible to encounter God in reading the words of the Bible? Does reading the Christian Bible require a different approach from how one may read other texts or writings? What is required of the spiritual reader to read well? Seeking to answer such questions, Angela Lou Harvey provides a theological exploration of the idea of "spiritual reading" in the context of the Western church today. Drawing upon insights of theologians such as Karl Barth, Henri de Lubac, and Ellen F. Davis, the author suggests that the particulars of Christian belief profoundly shape the distinctive practice of the spiritual reading of the Bible.

Book excerpt: In order to free society from the clutches of misleading religion rituals, Swamiji compiled a book - ‘Shanka Samadhan’ (Doubts and clarifications). In this book, Swamiji has resolved the prevailing pretentious rituals by giving references of the discourses of the great saints and sages as well as citing the dictates of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita, the Ramayana and the Purana on topics such as Who should be Worshiped, Religious Rituals (Karmkand), Havan, Yagya (Sacrificial Action), Celibacy, Gayatri, Yuga Dharma, Non-violence (Ahimsa), Sin and Righteousness, Santana Dharma, Varna (Caste System and its Classification), Vipra, Arya, Protection of Cows (Gau Raksha) etc. Essence of Sciences: - In the whole of the Universe, there is only one Religion (Dharma) – attainment of the immortal principle, peace forever, unbound happiness and it all begins with the faith in the Almighty. - Truth is the only Almighty. That what refutes this Truth cannot be called a religion (dharma). If the religion (dharma) does not have this truth then it will become meaningless. - Any body who has the unfaltering faith in the Almighty and recognises Ram or Om as the sign of the same thus chants the name is purely religious even if he does not know what the religion (dharma) is. - That what is forever, un-transformable, ancient, is the religion (dharma) and that what is there today but will not be there tomorrow, destructible is not religion. - There is a single Religion (Dharma) in the Universe. The strife to seek that forever being Almighty is the Religion (Dharma). If there are two almighties then He will need another Universe – to fulfil the same.
