Book Synopsis The Cashaway Psalmody by : Stephen A. Marini
Download or read book The Cashaway Psalmody written by Stephen A. Marini and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2020-02-14 with total page 466 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Singing master Durham Hills created The Cashaway Psalmody to give as a wedding present in 1770. A collection of tenor melody parts for 152 tunes and sixty-three texts, the Psalmody is the only surviving tunebook from the colonial-era South and one of the oldest sacred music manuscripts from the Carolinas. It is all the more remarkable for its sophistication: no similar document of the period matches Hills's level of musical expertise, reportorial reach, and calligraphic skill. Stephen A. Marini, discoverer of The Cashaway Psalmody, offers the fascinating story of the tunebook and its many meanings. From its musical, literary, and religious origins in England, he moves on to the life of Durham Hills; how Carolina communities used the book; and the Psalmody's significance in understanding how ritual song—transmitted via transatlantic music, lyrics, and sacred singing—shaped the era's development. Marini also uses close musical and textual analyses to provide a critical study that offers music historians and musicologists valuable insights on the Pslamody and its period. Meticulous in presentation and interdisciplinary in scope, The Cashaway Psalmody unlocks an important source for understanding life in the Lower South in the eighteenth century.

Book Synopsis O Sing Unto the Lord by : Andrew Gant
Download or read book O Sing Unto the Lord written by Andrew Gant and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2017-03-22 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this expansive cultural history, Andrew Gant traces English sacred music from the Latin chant of late antiquity to the great proliferation and diversification of styles seen in contemporary repertoires. The book explores church music in its great variety of forms and performance contexts: cathedral music and music performed at small country parishes, hymns sung in church and at gatherings, all the way up to today’s mixture and hybridization of the traditional and contemporary styles. Most of all, it illuminates how political battles and sweeping changes in worship affected the church music profession; how musicians, clergy, and worshipers responded; and how the repertory was reinvented many times over as a result. This work was first brought out by Profile Books in 2015. The author has contributed a new preface for our edition, offering reflections on English church music in its American contexts.
Book Synopsis The Pen and the People by : Susan Whyman
Download or read book The Pen and the People written by Susan Whyman and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2011-03-31 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susan Whyman draws on a hidden world of previously unknown letter writers to explore bold new ideas about the history of writing, reading and the novel. Capturing actual dialogues of people discussing subjects as diverse as marriage, poverty, poetry, and the emotional lives of servants, The Pen and the People will be enjoyed by everyone interested in history, literature, and the intimate experiences of ordinary people. Based on over thirty-five previously unknown letter collections, it tells the stories of workers and the middling sort - a Yorkshire bridle maker, a female domestic servant, a Derbyshire wheelwright, an untrained woman writing poetry and short stories, as well as merchants and their families. Their ordinary backgrounds and extraordinary writings challenge accepted views that popular literacy was rare in England before 1800. This democratization of letter writing could never have occurred without the development of the Royal Mail. Drawing on new information gleaned from personal letters, Whyman reveals how the Post Office had altered the rhythms of daily life long before the nineteenth century. As the pen, the post, and the people became increasingly connected, so too were eighteenth-century society and culture slowly and subtly transformed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique reference is the first systematic guide to the history of the English-language hymn tune, as represented in printed sources from the earliest (Coverdale's Goostly Psalmes) to 1820. Using a simple numerical code to represent the first two lines of each melody, the book allows the reader to look up any of nearly 20,000 British and American hymn tunes without advance knowledge of the composer, name, or text. Each entry provides an array of information on the tune's first printing, composer, the texts to which it was sung, and its later history. The work contains a historical introduction; a theoretical introduction; chronological and geographical lists of sources; indexes of tunes by name, composer, text, and metre; and tables of concordances with early German and French tunes.
Book Synopsis Music Entries at Stationers' Hall, 1710–1818 by : Michael Kassler
Download or read book Music Entries at Stationers' Hall, 1710–1818 written by Michael Kassler and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 812 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The British Copyright Act of 1709 protected proprietors of books and music printed after 10 April 1710 who gave copies to the Company of Stationers in London. Upon receipt of a copy, usually within days of its first publication, the Stationers' Hall warehouse keeper entered details into a register. They included the date of registration, the name of the work's proprietor (its author or, if copyright had been transferred, its publisher), and the work's full title, which normally named the composer and the writer of any text and often named the work's performers and dedicatee. Although some publishers put the words 'Entered at Stationers' Hall' on title-pages without actually depositing copies, the information in the registers about the many works that were registered has significant bibliographic value. Because the music entries have not previously been printed and access to them has been difficult, they generally have been ignored by cataloguers and scholars, with the consequence that numerous musical works of this period have been misdated in libraries and reference books. This book makes available, for the first time, the full text of the music entries at Stationers' Hall from 1710 to 1810 and abbreviated details of works entered from 1811 to 1818. Its value is enhanced by the inclusion of locations of copies of most works, together with indexes of composers, authors, performers and dedicatees, and an explanatory introduction by the compiler.
