Download or read book Button Man written by Andrew Gross and published by Minotaur Books. This book was released on 2018-09-18 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Mr. Gross's direct style is full of sentiment but never maudlin and well-suited to scenes of violent action. Button Man has plenty of zip–and lots of moxie, too." –Wall Street Journal "This is a big, heartfelt handshake of a book, with all the street-scrambling energy that distinguishes the best fiction of Jeffrey Archer and Mario Puzo." –USA Today Following up The One Man and The Saboteur, Gross's next historical thriller brings to life the drama of the birth of organized crime in 1930s New York City from the tale of one family. After a string of New York Times bestselling suburban thrillers, Andrew Gross has reinvented himself as a writer of historical thrillers. In his latest novel, Button Man, he delivers a stirring story of a Jewish family brought together in the dawn of the women's garment business and torn apart by the birth of organized crime in New York City in the 1930s. Morris, Sol, and Harry Rabishevsky grew up poor and rough in a tiny flat on the Lower East Side, until the death of their father thrust them into having to fend for themselves and support their large family. Morris, the youngest, dropped out of school at twelve years old and apprenticed himself to a garment cutter in a clothing factory; Sol headed to accounting school; but Harry, scarred by a family tragedy, fell in with a gang of thugs as a teenager. Morris steadily climbs through the ranks at the factory until at twenty-one he finally goes out on his own, convincing Sol to come work with him. But Harry can't be lured away from the glamour, the power, and the money that come from his association with Louis Buchalter, whom Morris has battled with since his youth and who has risen to become the most ruthless mobster in New York. And when Buchalter sets his sights on the unions that staff the garment makers' factories, a fatal showdown is inevitable, pitting brother against brother. This new novel is equal parts historical thriller, rich with the detail of a vibrant New York City in the 1920s and 1930s, and family saga, based on Andrew Gross's own family story and on the history of the era, complete with appearances by real-life characters like mobsters Louis Lepke and Dutch Schultz and special prosecutor Thomas Dewey, and cements Gross's reputation as today's most atmospheric and original historical thriller writer.

Book excerpt: WillDid you hear the one about the rich parents who sent their kid to conversion therapy? You didn't? Well, that's because it's not funny. And it didn't work.I'm a trust fund baby. The boy with the summer trips to France, the Mercedes for his sixteenth birthday, and the fancy degree from Georgetown. I have everything. But my family didn't believe me when I came out. I've lived my truth for years, but they just don't get it.The moment I see Jesse Boatwright, though, I start forming a plan. Jesse needs cash, and I need a date for my sister's debutante ball. But Jesse dislikes everything about me. He says I'm rich and spoiled, and I was born with a silver spoon shoved straight down my throat. That's fine. He's just my date. But when Jesse kisses me, his lips tell a different tale. I can feel the depth of his need, the desire in his veins. I wish I could block out the world and hold him forever, but he keeps pushing me away. He tells me he's a freak, a screw-up, a liar, that we could never be together. There are secrets Jesse is keeping; I just don't know what they are yet. When I finally discover the terrors that lie in his past, Jesse is already part of my story. I'm head over heels, falling hard, and ready to show Jesse that he's exactly the man I need.Jesse I lied to get a job. Well, it's bigger than that. I lied copiously to get a job, and my boss is the hottest guy I've ever seen. Will Marshall is everything I never wanted. His blood is Confederate blue, and his parents own the Country Club of Virginia. His money dates back to Queen Victoria, and I'd rather not imagine his family's history when it comes to civil rights. But Will is kind and strong, and those bedroom eyes make me want to drop out of my office chair. He's beautiful, and not just physically. Every inch of him is good and pure, and I'm filled with lies. I haven't been with a guy since my ex gave me a black eye, burned all my stuff, and stole my cat. I don't have money to pay rent, and I don't have a degree from anywhere, let alone a doctorate in physical therapy. I'm not half the person Will thinks I am. But I'm falling in love with him. I can't let him know that. After the deb ball, I need to quit this job and leave town before he finds out what I really am.When he holds me, though, I feel real again, like a person worth loving. When danger is on the horizon, I just have to decide if Will Marshall is worth the risk. Proud is a 67k full length mm romance novel, the first in the DC Pride series! Download or read book Folded Wisdom written by Joanna Guest and published by Celadon Books. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Folded Wisdom is an inspirational testament to the depth of a father’s love for his children, and an intimate look into beautiful, raw, human communication. Within the pages of this book, Joanna Guest shares the insightful notes her father drew for her and her brother Theo every day for nearly 15 years. For her entire childhood, Joanna’s father, Bob, had a ritual: wake up at dawn, walk the dog, and sit down at the kitchen table with a blank pad of paper and plenty of colored markers to craft notes for his two children. Over the years, word games and puzzles for five-year-olds morphed into thoughtful guidance and reflections for his teenagers approaching adulthood. Now, with more than 3,500 of her father’s colorful notes in hand, Joanna has decided that the lessons tucked inside are worth sharing. Folded Wisdom highlights the collection of Bob’s notes, telling a story filled with universal values that encourages meaningful self-reflection – about how we all face successes and failures; express happiness and sadness; and communicate frustration, praise, and love to one another. Heartfelt and full of possibility for the future, a father’s folded notes and drawings are timeless reminders of love.

Tuchman brings the era to vivid life: the decline of the Edwardian aristocracy; the Anarchists of Europe and America; Germany and its self-depicted hero, Richard Strauss; Diaghilev’s Russian ballet and Stravinsky’s music; the Dreyfus Affair; the Peace Conferences in The Hague; and the enthusiasm and tragedy of Socialism, epitomized by the assassination of Jean Jaurès on the night the Great War began and an epoch came to a close. Book excerpt: The Republic of Kiribati (formerly the Gilbert Islands) straddles the equator in the temperate waters of the Central Pacific like a handful of emeralds cast upon a counterpane of brilliant blue. Located 2,400 miles southwest of Hawaii, Kiribati is comprised of sixteen small, flat, palm-covered coral atolls and inhabited by gentle people, many of whom live, as they have for centuries, in villages of thatched huts, where they subsist on a simple fare of coconuts, breadfruit, and fish. Despite the encroachment of modernity and the perils of climate change that erode its beaches, Kiribati remains the same dreamy paradise that once inspired the great Scottish writer Robert Louis Stevenson, who sailed these waters aboard the schooner Equator in the late 1800s. Today, these beaches continue to attract lovers of the sea who eschew the beaten path. But in the fall of 1943, the serenity of these islands was shattered by a horrific battle. For seventy-six blood-soaked hours, United States Marines and sailors fought elite Japanese troops to gain control of a strategic airstrip on the tiny island of Betio. The conflagration became known as the Battle of Tarawa, named for the atoll where it took place. When it was over, nearly five thousand men lay dead, their bodies putrid and bloated under the blazing equatorial sun. So ferocious and heroic was the fighting that Time magazine correspondent Robert Sherrod, an eyewitness, compared Tarawa with epic battles such as Concord Bridge, the Alamo, and Belleau Wood. President Franklin D. Roosevelt honored the contribution of every Marine and sailor who was there with the Presidential Unit Citation. Sadly, the Battle of Tarawa is all but forgotten today—a victim of the unsentimental passage of time and the shameful paucity of history taught to our young. But for the few who still survive, and for all Marines—living or dead—the sacrifices and horror of Tarawa will never be forgotten. For them, the assault on Betio both defined and forged their mission in World War II and proved them to be an elite and fierce amphibious assault force. In doing so, it created a pantheon of heroes. This story is about one of those heroes: Marine SSgt. William James “Bill” Bordelon. Bordelon courageously gave his life at Tarawa, and on June 17, 1944, his parents were presented our nation’s highest award for valor—the Medal of Honor—on behalf of a grateful nation. As with all heroes, Bill Bordelon’s life was much more than the few violent moments in combat for which we honor him. He was a loving son, a kind and protective brother, a proud Texan, a fighting Marine, and a patriotic American. The courage and leadership he displayed were a testament to the efficacies of his family, his faith, a disciplined Catholic education, and the transcendent ethos of the Marine Corps. It was these values, these cornerstones of courage, that became the lodestar of his life and led him to immortality. In Gilbertese folklore, it was the Spider Lord Nareau te Moa-ni-bai, “the first of things,” who, from the “dark embrace,” created the world from a mussel shell and filled the heavens over his islands with a billion stars. The Marines who died at Tarawa in 1943 rose to join those stars, and the brightest of them all were men like Bill Bordelon. May his story serve to honor them all.
