This book was released on 2001 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive analysis of young Proust's evolving conception of the world, from his early friendships and educational experiences in the 1880s to the turn of the twentieth century. It looks in detail at his early fictional and critical writings, his associations with various literary periodicals, and the social milieus in which he moved. Its primary purpose is to understand Proust as a worldly figure with concrete attitudes and ideas about such issues as social class, the relationship between art and society, the responsibilities of the writer, and the debate between materialism and idealism as seen in the context of mid- to late-nineteenth-century thought.

Book Synopsis The Material Object in the Work of Marcel Proust by : Thomas Baldwin
Download or read book The Material Object in the Work of Marcel Proust written by Thomas Baldwin and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2005 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the development of Proust's treatment of material objects from his earliest work Les Plaisirs et les jours to his mature novel À la recherche du temps perdu. It examines the literary influences on Proust's way with objects in the light of certain critical texts and reconsiders the significance of Ruskin. As the movement from unreflective and spontaneous representation to a meta-narrative of consciousness is traced, some questions as to the banality of the 'banal object' arise. The meta-narrative finds resonance in a peculiarly Proustian pictoriality which has been largely unnoticed. It resides in descriptions where objects appear simultaneously or at different times as things in paintings and in the real. By exploring connections between Proust's pictoriality and his reflections on 'matière' and 'surface', the author suggests a radical approach to the modernism of À la recherche du temps perdu.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is part of a series of 7 volumes that can be read individually in any order. Highly Autobiographical, the first volume recounts the experiences of the Narrator while he is growing up, learning about art, participating in society, and falling in love. Despite initially being rejected by a number of publishers Swann's Way, Proust eventually arranged with the publisher Grasset to pay the cost of publication himself. When published it was advertised as the first of a three-volume novel. After the success of the book one of the people who rejected his book said: "For several days I have been unable to put your book down. The rejection of this book will remain the most serious mistake ever made by the NRF and, since I bear the shame of being very much responsible for it, one of the most stinging and remorseful regrets of my life"
