Book Synopsis White Women, Aboriginal Missions and Australian Settler Governments by : Joanna Cruickshank
Download or read book White Women, Aboriginal Missions and Australian Settler Governments written by Joanna Cruickshank and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In White Women, Aboriginal Missions and Australian Settler Governments, Joanna Cruickshank and Patricia Grimshaw provide the first detailed study of the central part that white women played in missions to Aboriginal people in Australia. As Aboriginal people experienced violent dispossession through settler invasion, white mission women were positioned as ‘mothers’ who could protect, nurture and ‘civilise’ Aboriginal people. In this position, missionary women found themselves continuously navigating the often-contradictory demands of their own intentions, of Aboriginal expectations and of settler government policies. Through detailed studies that draw on rich archival sources, this book provides a new perspective on the history of missions in Australia and also offers new frameworks for understanding the exercise of power by missionary women in colonial contexts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the day that Penny turned 13, her life changed forever. She would become part of a global team of Earth Protectors, bestowed with powers beyond her imagination, and lead three of her best friends in their first mission. With only a few days of training, her team of Protectors would have to learn to harness their powers and special abilities, and work together as a team to protect their homes and their beloved Silver Lake. With their science teacher as their guide, trainer, and former Protector, they will try to learn how to control their animal metamorphoses and the special abilities that come with their various animal forms. These powers may save their lives and the lives of others, so it is necessary for them to master them. But with so many questions unanswered, and so little time to save their community, they must dig deep within themselves to solve all of the problems that come their way. This first mission is just the beginning for the Earth Protectors; they will need to take what they have learned and use their new skills to continue their missions until their 20th birthdays. Their trainer has told them that they might survive until they are 20, but due to the dangers of their missions, they may not make it. They will need to be mature, smart, and creative in order to stop the pollution that may destroy Silver Lake. If they don't learn how to work together with their differing opinions and personalities, everything could be lost. This is the story of the first mission of the Protectors of the Earth, and what happened after they were chosen.
