Book Synopsis Colored Television by : Marla Frederick
Download or read book Colored Television written by Marla Frederick and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-16 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The presence of women and African Americans not simply as viewers, but also as televangelists and station owners in their own right has dramatically changed the face of American religious broadcasting in recent decades. Colored Television looks at the influence of these ministries beyond the United States, where complex gospels of prosperity and gospels of sexual redemption mutually inform one another while offering hopeful yet socially contested narratives of personal uplift. As an ethnography, Colored Television illuminates the phenomenal international success of American TV preachers like T.D. Jakes, Creflo Dollar, Joyce Meyer, and Juanita Bynum. Focusing particularly on Jamaica and the Caribbean, it also explores why the genre has resonated so powerfully around the world. Investigating the roles of producers, consumers, and distributors, Marla Frederick takes a unique look at the ministries, the communities they enter, and the global markets of competition that buffer them.

Download or read book Time Peace written by Ellen Santilli Vaughn and published by Zondervan. This book was released on 2009-08-30 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world that runs with the need for speed, we feel time pushing us, sometimes even mastering us, as we rush from one thing to the next. Time is as familiar as the clock on the wall, yet it’s also a mystery. For poets, philosophers, songwriters, and scientists, time and eternity are frontiers as rich and compelling as the origins of the cosmos and the nature of God.One of the emerging writers and thinkers of our day, Ellen Vaughn, takes us on a stirring journey through this topic that touches us all. How can time-bound humans relate to a limitless God and enjoy his peace? Time Peace examines how we experience time in life’s fleeting moments. It explores timekeeping through history and in different cultures and introduces the unique Christian distinctive about it. It soars through the space-time continuum in an intriguing exploration of how science and philosophy illuminate biblical accounts. It helps readers take these truths and apply them to everyday life, freeing us to live at peace in time—and to leave a legacy that lasts for eternity.
Book Synopsis The Global Transformation of Time by : Vanessa Ogle
Download or read book The Global Transformation of Time written by Vanessa Ogle and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-12 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As new networks of railways, steamships, and telegraph communications brought distant places into unprecedented proximity, previously minor discrepancies in local time-telling became a global problem. Vanessa Ogle’s chronicle of the struggle to standardize clock times and calendars from 1870 to 1950 highlights the many hurdles that proponents of uniformity faced in establishing international standards. Time played a foundational role in nineteenth-century globalization. Growing interconnectedness prompted contemporaries to reflect on the annihilation of space and distance and to develop a global consciousness. Time—historical, evolutionary, religious, social, and legal—provided a basis for comparing the world’s nations and societies, and it established hierarchies that separated “advanced” from “backward” peoples in an age when such distinctions underwrote European imperialism. Debates and disagreements on the varieties of time drew in a wide array of observers: German government officials, British social reformers, colonial administrators, Indian nationalists, Arab reformers, Muslim scholars, and League of Nations bureaucrats. Such exchanges often heightened national and regional disparities. The standardization of clock times therefore remained incomplete as late as the 1940s, and the sought-after unification of calendars never came to pass. The Global Transformation of Time reveals how globalization was less a relentlessly homogenizing force than a slow and uneven process of adoption and adaptation that often accentuated national differences.

The author provides stimulating discussions of the great works of these three periods - from Thomas Jefferson's Monticello and Charles Willson Peale's Staircase Portrait to Thoreau's Walden and George Caleb Bingham's Fur Traders Descending the Missouri to The Education of Henry Adams and the late paintings of Thomas Eakins and Winslow Homer - finding common threads and complementary expressions in the images that writers and visual artists alike drew upon to convey the mood and vision of each distinctive era."--BOOK JACKET.
