Isaiah was Samuel's and Samuel was Isaiah's. That was the way it was since the beginning, and the way it was to be until the end. In the barn they tended to the animals, but also to each other, transforming the hollowed-out shed into a place of human refuge, a source of intimacy and hope in a world ruled by vicious masters. But when an older man—a fellow slave—seeks to gain favor by preaching the master's gospel on the plantation, the enslaved begin to turn on their own. Isaiah and Samuel's love, which was once so simple, is seen as sinful and a clear danger to the plantation's harmony. With a lyricism reminiscent of Toni Morrison, Robert Jones, Jr., fiercely summons the voices of slaver and enslaved alike, from Isaiah and Samuel to the calculating slave master to the long line of women that surround them, women who have carried the soul of the plantation on their shoulders. As tensions build and the weight of centuries—of ancestors and future generations to come—culminates in a climactic reckoning, The Prophets fearlessly reveals the pain and suffering of inheritance, but is also shot through with hope, beauty, and truth, portraying the enormous, heroic power of love.

Book Synopsis Their Master's Voice by : Chris Woodall
Download or read book Their Master's Voice written by Chris Woodall and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Of the five books that make up the Major Prophets in the Old Testament, three are amongst the largest of the Bible: Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel. As if to underscore their Major status, each one is significantly longer than the Minor Prophets combined. Although the specific details of each prophet’s contribution differ, a more general overarching theme may be discerned in them all: to remind their respective target audiences of their covenantal obligations. The prevailing human condition throughout the ages ensures that, while circumstances, cultural development, and technological advancements do change with time, the underlying sinful disposition of mankind remains constant in every epoch. Mercifully, God’s messages to both victim and perpetrator alike are similarly unchanging. In the stream of progressive revelation, it would be irresponsible simply to dip into the waters of the Old Testament and translate its lessons to our day without due process. That process might include asking certain questions of the texts under consideration. Are the lessons provided by these Old Testament saints applicable to us as Christians in the twenty-first century? Do their words still speak today? Only if Christian believers are still prone to such folly as chasing disposable pleasures instead of choosing meaningful pursuits.
Book Synopsis New Apostolic Reformation? by : R. Douglas Geivett
Download or read book New Apostolic Reformation? written by R. Douglas Geivett and published by Lexham Press. This book was released on 2018-07-25 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This critique provides a framework for understanding and interpreting the widespread but little-known New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) movement. As the authors state in the preface: "We write this book with two major goals in mind. First, to give people an idea of the sheer size and reach of the NAR movement. And second, to systematize its key teachings and practices and evaluate them on the basis of Scripture and careful reasoning . . In our judgment, the NAR perspective crosses these boundaries [that is, certain broad parameters, revealed in Scripture and practiced in the historical orthodox church], and it does so in part because of flawed theology rooted in a flawed understanding of Scripture. We wish to warn readers about a possible confusion: Some critics have linked the NAR movement with mainstream Pentecostalism and charismatics. We do not do this. In fact, it is our contention that the NAR movement deviates from classical Pentecostal and charismatic teachings. This movement has emerged out of independent charismatic churches and, thus, has gained a foothold in many of those churches in varying degrees."

These books--Isaiah through Malachi--respond to three key moments in Israel's history: the end of the Northern Kingdom in 722 BCE, the end of the Southern Kingdom in 587 BCE, and the beginning of the restoration from the Babylonian exile in 538 BCE. Gowan traces the theme of death and resurrection throughout these accounts, finding a symbolic message of particular significance to Christian interpreters of the Bible.

Download or read book Bible Prophecy Exposed written by R. Michael Comstock and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2013-04 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As time goes by, words can evolve and take on new meanings. Examining words from the first century can help us understand how definitions have changed. This book tries to determine how the people of that era recognized what the prophets were saying. As you learn to interpret their language, you may find the Bible takes on a whole new flavor. The following are just a few issues we will address: Are signs of the end times revealed in Scripture? Is there a rapture and when does it happen? Does the Bible disclose when Jesus' return is near? When does the tribulation occur? Is the key to decoding prophecy found in the Bible? Can secular history help us unlock some of the mysteries?
