Download or read book Helium Three written by Roland Dobbs and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 1088 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The condensed phases of helium three provide an exciting laboratory for many fundamental questions in condensed matter physics. Due to its light mass and weak interatomic potential, the condensed phases of helium display quantum effects more dramatically than any other atomic system. Intuitionbased on classical experience is often misleading in these phases: the solid phase for instance is less ordered at low temperature than the liquid phase. The present book is unique in covering all the low temperature properties of helium three as liquid, superfluid, and solid. It provides anintroduction to the extensive literature on helium three from the point of view of an experimentalist, and includes the analogy of its properties with the cosmological 'big bang'. Graduate students, researchers, and professionals in condensed matter physics and low temperature physics will findthis the standard reference work for the decade to come.
Book Synopsis Liquids Under Negative Pressure by : A.R. Imre
Download or read book Liquids Under Negative Pressure written by A.R. Imre and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is possible to "stretch" a liquid and, when suitably prepared, liquids are capable of sustaining substantial levels of tension, often for significant periods of time. These negative pressure states are metastable but can last for days - long enough for substantial experimental investigation. This volume is a review of recent and current research into the behaviour of liquids under negative pressure. Part I deals with the thermodynamics of stretched liquids. Part II discusses the physical and chemical behaviour of liquids under negative pressure. Part III contains papers on the effect of negative pressure on the solidification of a liquid. Part IV is devoted to stretched helium and Part V discusses cavitation in various stretched liquids. Part VI deals with the effect of foreign substances on cavitation.

Download or read book Quantum Liquids written by J. Ruvalds and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum Liquids contains lectures presented at the International School of Low Temperature Physics in Erice, Italy, on June 11-25, 1977. The book reviews developments in the study of superfluid phases of the 3He system and in the understanding of quasiparticles and their interactions in the Bose 4He system, along with recent work on the 3He-4He mixtures. Comprised of 10 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the renormalization group theory, critical phenomena, and phase transition in superfluid helium. It then discusses the superfluid density and the nature of critical singularities, the theory and practice of neutron scattering, and scattering from weakly interacting quantum liquids. The reader is also introduced to the superfluidity of liquid helium films, light scattering from superfluid helium, and the theory of superfluid 3He. Other chapters focus on superfluid flow in helium-4 compared to that in helium-3, the physical properties of small droplets of helium as analogs of heavy nuclei, and experimental properties of superfluid 3He. Excitations in 3He-4He mixtures, bound excitations in liquid He4, and temperature dependence of the single roton energy and lifetime are also discussed. Physicists and students of physics will find this book extremely useful.

Book Synopsis Studies of Atomic Free Radicals Stored in a Cryogenic Environment by : David Mallin Lee
Download or read book Studies of Atomic Free Radicals Stored in a Cryogenic Environment written by David Mallin Lee and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Impurity-Helium solids are porous gel-like solids consisting of impurity atoms and molecules surrounded by thin layers of solid helium. They provide an ideal medium for matrix isolation of free radicals to prevent recombination and store chemical energy. In this work electron spin resonance, nuclear magnetic resonance, X ray diffraction and ultrasound techniques have all been employed to study the properties of these substances. Detailed studies via electron spin resonance of exchange tunneling chemical reactions involving hydrogen and deuterium molecular and atomic impurities in these solids have been performed and compared with theory. Concentrations of hydrogen approaching the quantum solid criterion have been produced.
