Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Properties of Liquid Ammonia In the fall of 1911 the study of the properties of liquid, saturated and superheated vapor of ammonia was taken up by Mr. W. E. Mosher of the Experiment Station staff under the guidance of Professor G. A. Goodenough. They have examined carefully all of the existing data that is available and have developed a characteristic equation for ammonia, similar to the one developed for steam by Professor Good enough. They have decided that the work done by Drewes, under the direction of C. Dieterici is the most complete and reli able. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Properties of Saturated and Superheated Ammonia Vapor The first attempt to establish the fundamental equations for the vapor (ff ammonia and to compute tables of its properties was made by Ledoux.6 These equations and resulting tables, resting as they do upon unsound hypotheses and meager experimental data, are, in the light of later investigations, quite inaccurate. The next theoretical investigation of the subject was undertaken by Zeuner,7 who computed new constants for ammonia, in the equation of state of the form already applied by him to steam, and used by Ledoux for ammonia. He also constructed empirical formulas for the inner and outer latent heat, and the specific heat'of the liquid, and by use of these formulas computed tables which. Appeared in the earlier editions of his thermodynamics.8 In the later editions9 the values thus calculated have still been used for temperatures below 32° F., but results of later experimental deter minations have been used above that temperature. These tables for ammonia vapor are given in both English and French units. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Properties of Steam and Ammonia A table of the thermal properties of a vapor should possess two characteristics, consistency and accuracy. A table is thermodynami cally consistent when the tabular values are obtained from equations that are properly connected by the necessary thermodynamic relations, such as the Clausius and Clapeyron relations; it may be considered accurate if the calculated values show satisfactory agreement with trustworthy experimental data. The older tables of the properties of steam were neither consistent nor accurate. The tabular values were calculated from empirical formu las based chie y on Regnault's data, and the necessity of consistency was not, recognized. Two sets of tables have been based on the general theory developed by. Callendar. These are absolutely consistent, but in the light of the knowledge acquired from the Munich experiments, they can no longer be regarded as accurate. In certain tables that have appeared recently have been embodied the results of the Munich experi ments and also the researches of Dr. Davis on the total heat of steam. These tables are undoubtedly far more accurate than the earlier tables, but, having a more or less empirical basis, they: are not rigorously con sistent. The tables of the properties of saturated and superheated steam here presented are based on a new formulation the [essential features of which are discussed in the first section of the book. A more complete exposi tion will be found in Bulletin No. 75, Engineering Experiment Station, University of Illinois. The new theory correlates perfectly the experi ments on the volume and specific heat of superheated steam; it gives values of the heat content of saturated steam that agree with those deduced by Davis from the throttling experiments; and, in general, it meets satisfactorily all the tests furnished by the available experimental evidence. The tables derived from the formulation are necessarily con sistent, and they are at the same time extremely accurate. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Specific Heat of Liquid Ammonia The previous determinations of specific heat of liquid ammonia are represented graphically in Fig. 1, together with the results of the present measurements. None of the previous measurements extend to temperatures below 0° C. Von Strombeck 1 (1890) used the method of mixtures. About 128 g of ammonia contained in a steel bomb were used in a calori meter having a water equivalent of about 1 kg. The heat capacity from 30° to 60° was observed. Eight experiments were made. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ammonia and Its Compounds: Their Manufacture and Uses Ammonia and its Compounds are products of considerable use and value in the industrial arts, and of late their application to various purposes - manufacture of ice, agriculture, etc. - has increased very much, so that chemical manufacturers have been induced to pay more attention to methods and means of producing them in a comparatively pure condition on a large scale, and to seek new sources of raw material for their preparation. Under these circumstances, and seeing that there has been but little published in England about the manufacture of ammonia, the publication of the present translation of Professor Camille Vincent's little treatise on Ammonia will not be without interest and value. The Author, who is Professor of Chemistry at the Paris Central School of Arts and Manufactures, describes very clearly the methods which are largely and successfully practised in France for the preparation of ammonia and ammonium salts from various waste and raw products. The description is materially enhanced in value by the many illustrations of the plant that is used in conjunction with these processes which accompany it. A new Index has been compiled to facilitate reference. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ammonia and Ammonium Compounds The book may therefore be regarded as an attempt to collect descriptions of all the processes necessary for the utilization of the nitrogen present in coal. I have omitted mentioning obsolete views, even when still held by certain chemists and others, the object of the work being to portray briefly the present position of the two above-named industries, both of which are so closely connected with the coal gas manufacture. To remedy a want in the present literature on this subject, I have given special attention to the analysis of the final products, and also of the raw material and other substances required in the various processes. Should these methods, which are based upon practical experience, prove acceptable, a step will have been taken in the direction of unity in analytical methods, which result is greatly to be desired in this as in other industries.
