Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pronoun of Address in English Literature of the Thirteenth Century I realize that my plan of giving as far as possible the exact number of occurrences of forms and constructions may Show more plainly to the observant reader things that I have overlooked. Moreover it may seem at times to lay too much stress upon forms which are probably mere scribal or editorial errors. Nevertheless, the conclusions that can be drawn from definite statements, when those statements are reasonably accurate, as I hope all will be found to be, are so much more satisfactory than mere general statements that I have ventured to give my findings largely in statistical form. Book Synopsis The Language of Early English Literature by : Sara Pons-Sanz
Download or read book The Language of Early English Literature written by Sara Pons-Sanz and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2017-09-09 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did the English language change from the Old to the Early Modern period? What effect do linguistic and stylistic choices have on a text? Why is it important to consider linguistic features together in a work? The grammar and vocabulary of the English language changed dramatically between the Old and Early Modern periods. These changes in language usage are explored in The Language of Early English Literature by examining the effect of authors' linguistic choices on the descriptions of characters, events, and situations. Written with today's undergraduate student in mind, this textbook is a highly rewarding guide to the rich history of the English language and literature. The Language of Early English Literature: - Provides detailed explanations of linguistic features, such as word formation, phrase structure, syntax, and semantics - Analyses a wide range of texts from Old English, Middle English and Early Modern English, and establishes comparisons with works written in other languages - Includes an invaluable glossary and an extensive bibliography
Book Synopsis A Middle English Syntax by : Tauno F. Mustanoja
Download or read book A Middle English Syntax written by Tauno F. Mustanoja and published by John Benjamins Publishing Company. This book was released on 2016-08-18 with total page 702 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For a good orientation into the history of English grammar, several books are indispensable. One of those is Mustanoja’s A Middle English Syntax. However, for a long time this work was not readily available; the present edition changes that. This is a fac simile reprint from the 1960 publication which appeared as volume XXIII in ‘Mémoires de la Société Néophilologique de Helsinki’, with a new Introduction by Elly van Gelderen. Compared to Old English, Middle English has fewer grammars and textbooks devoted to it. This book provides an interesting supplement by going deeper into certain questions and, especially, into exceptions. The book points out differences with Old English and certain peculiarities of the Middle English system. It was originally written for students of Middle English literature but serves a linguist well in detailed descriptions of the parts of speech, the use of the various cases, gender, and number. Word order, complex sentences, and conjunctions were meant to be dealt with in a second volume, which was never published.
