Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit (Galatians 5:25). The Holy Spirit empowers us, guides us, and enables us to grow and endure in our relationship with the Father through Jesus Christ. Often the most misunderstood member of the Trinity, the person of the Spirit continues to attract attention today amidst church revivals and renewals. In this new edition of his classic Keep in Step with the Spirit, J. I. Packer seeks to help Christians reaffirm the biblical call to holiness and the Spirit s role in keeping our covenant with God. Packer guides us through the riches and depth of the Spirit s work, assesses versions of holiness and the charismatic life, and shows how Christ must always be at the centre of true Spirit-led ministry. A new chapter explores Christian assurance. With abiding relevance and significance, Keep in Step with the Spirit sets forth vital knowledge for healthy and joyous Christian living, through understanding and experience of God the Holy Spirit. Here is a book for every serious believer to read and re-read.

Book excerpt: What does living for Jesus look like in the everyday stuff of life? Many Christians have unwittingly embraced the idea that “church” is a once-a-week event rather than a community of Spirit-empowered people; that “ministry” is what pastors do on Sundays rather than the 24/7 calling of all believers; and that “discipleship” is a program rather than the normal state of every follower of Jesus. Drawing on his experience as a pastor and church planter, Jeff Vanderstelt wants us to see that there’s more—much more—to the Christian life than sitting in a pew once a week. God has called his people to something bigger: a view of the Christian life that encompasses the ordinary, the extraordinary, and everything in between. Packed full of biblical teaching, compelling stories, and real-world advice, this book will remind you that Jesus is filling the world with his presence through the everyday lives of everyday people... People just like you.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the Spirit, being somewhat forgotten is an occupational hazard. The Holy Spirit is so actively involved in our lives that we can take his presence for granted. As they say, familiarity breeds contempt. Just as we take breathing for granted, we can take the Holy Spirit for granted simply because we constantly depend on him. Like the cane that soon feels like an extension of the blind man’s own body, we too easily begin to think of the Holy Spirit as an extension of ourselves. Yet the Spirit is at the center of the action in the divine drama from Genesis 1:2 all the way to Revelation 22:17. The Spirit’s work is as essential as the Father’s and the Son’s, yet the Spirit’s work is always directed to the person and work of Christ. In fact, the efficacy of the Holy Spirit’s mission is measured by the extent to which we are focused on Christ. The Holy Spirit is the person of the Trinity who brings the work of the Father, in the Son, to completion. In everything that the Triune God performs, this perfecting work is characteristic of the Spirit. In Rediscovering the Holy Spirit, author, pastor, and theologian Mike Horton introduces readers to the neglected person of the Holy Spirit, showing that the work of God’s Spirit is far more ordinary and common than we realize. Horton argues that we need to take a step back every now and again to focus on the Spirit himself—his person and work—in order to recognize him as someone other than Jesus or ourselves, much less something in creation. Through this contemplation we can gain a fresh dependence on the Holy Spirit in every area of our lives.

Excerpt from book: By Rationalism, then, I do not mean the use of the reason in testing the evidence of a revelation alleged to be divine. Again, by Rationalism I do not mean the perception of the harmony of the Divine revelation with the human reason. It is no part of reason to believe that which is contrary to reason, and it is not Rationalism to reject it. As reason is a divine gift equally with revelation?the one in nature, the other in grace?discord between them is impossible, and harmony an intrinsic necessity. To recognise this harmony is a normal and vital operation of the reason under the guidance of faith; and the grace of faith elicits an eminent act of the reason, its highest and noblest exercise in the fullest expansion of its powers. By Rationalism I always intend an abnormal and illegitimate use of the reason, as I will briefly here explain. The best way to do so will be to give a short account of the introduction and use of the term. Professor Hahn, in his book, ' De Rationalismi, qui dicitur, vera indole, et qua cum Naturalismo contineatur ratione, ' says, ' As to Rationalism, this word was used in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries by those who considered reason as the source and norm of faith. Amos Comenius seems first to have used this word in 1661, and it neverhad a good sense. In the eighteenth century it was applied to those who were in earlier times called by the name of Naturalists.'' ' Naturalism, ' as Staudlin says, ' is distinguished from Rationalism by rejecting all and every revelation of God, especially any extraordinary one, through certain men. . . . Supernaturalism consists in general in the conviction that God has revealed Himself supernaturally and immediately. What is revealed might perhaps be discovered by natural methods, but either not at all, .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'Mission is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is. Missions exist because worship doesn't. Worship is ultimate.' John Piper's contemporary classic draws on key biblical texts to demonstrate that worship is the ultimate goal of the church and that proper worship fuels missionary outreach. Piper offers a biblical defence of God's supremacy in all things, providing a sound theological foundation for missions. He examines whether Jesus is the only way to salvation and issues a passionate plea for God-centredness in the missionary enterprise, seeking to define the scope of the task and the means for reaching 'all nations'. Let the Nations Be Glad! is a trusted resource for missionaries, pastors, church leaders, youth workers, seminary students, and all who want to connect their labours to God's global purposes. This third edition has been revised and expanded throughout and includes new material on the 'prosperity gospel'.

Book excerpt: Some of the last words Messiah spoke to His disciples were of something He called the promise of the Father. He declared that they would receive power when the promise came upon them. He commanded them not to leave the city until they received it and He indicated that only then would they be his witnesses in Yerushalayim, Judea, Samaria, and even to the remotest part of the earth. What is the promise of the Father? Is it for today and is it for you? In this book, Jim Brown tells how he went from resentful skeptic to enthusiastic recipient of the promise of the Father. He then demonstrates how his experience lines up with Scripture. You will want to have your Bible open as you read this book so that your decision as to whether the promise of the Father is for you is based on Scripture, and not influenced by the opinions or doctrines of men. You may need to put aside things you have been taught and set your heart on discovering what Scripture says about the promise of the Father. You also may need to put aside any bad experiences you may have had with Charismatics or Pentecostals. If the promise of the Father is meant for you, then you need to receive it. This book addresses how to do that and what you should expect to happen when you do. Jim Brown is a retired law enforcement officer and recipient of the Attorney General's Award for Excellence in Law Enforcement. He attends the Lighthouse, an independent, non-denominational church and has a ministry of teaching about the Jewish roots of Christianity and the Baptism in the Holy Spirit. Join Jim as he investigates what Scripture says about the Baptism in the Holy Spirit.

Book excerpt: "It is not our aim in this work to suggest, in behalf of woman, a change in the social or domestic relation. We are not disposed to feel that she is burdened with wrong in this direction. But we feel that there is a wrong, a serious wrong, affectingly cruel in its influences, which has long been depressing the hearts of the most devotedly pious women. And this wrong is inflicted by pious men, many of whom, we presume, imagine that they are doing God service in putting a seal upon lips which God has commanded to speak. It is not our intention to chide those who have thus kept the Christian female in bondage, as we believe in ignorance they have done it. But we feel that the time has now come when ignorance will involve guilt; and the Head of the church imperatively demands a consideration of the question proposed in the follwing pages."--Chapter I, page 13
