Book excerpt: A decade ago, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. She was vivacious and selfless and joyful, and cancer took her from me. But it was not just the disease; it was intense medical malpractice and negligence, a case that should have garnered millions of dollars in lawsuits but could never bring back the person I loved most.We fought for her for months, and right until the end, we did everything we could to save her from the disease and the medical mistakes that were slowly killing her. This memoir should serve as the story of my family, the fraying threads in a tapestry that held together at all costs, but also as a guide for anyone who needs to fight for the person they love. This book is dedicated to all the patients, families, loved ones, friends, nurses, doctors, lab technicians, x-ray technicians, aids, and everyone who finds themselves either working in or needing help from an imperfect system.

Book excerpt: Allison was sure God would save her marriage and her husband—but neither has been saved yet. What has become of the promise Allison once believed in? Tony Kavanagh had been Allison’s dream-come-true. They were in love within days, engaged within weeks, married and pregnant within a year. Her cup bubbled over with joy . . . but years later, that joy was extinguished by unexpected trials. The day Allison issued her husband an ultimatum, she thought it might save him. She never expected he would actually leave. She was certain God had promised healing—but it became clear she’d misunderstood. Now, living in the quiet mountain cabin she inherited from her Great Aunt Emma, Allison must come to terms with her grief and figure out how to adapt to small-town life. But when she finds a wedding dress and a collection of journals in Emma’s attic, a portrait of her aunt emerges that takes Allison completely by surprise: a portrait of a heartbroken woman surprisingly like herself. As Allison reads the incredible story of Emma’s life in the 1920s and 1930s, she is forced to ask a difficult question: Has she really surrendered every piece of her life to the Lord? Drawing from her own heart-wrenching story of redemption, A Promise Kept is Robin Lee Hatcher’s emotionally charged thanksgiving to a God who answers prayers—in His own time and His own ways. “A beautiful, heart-touching story of God’s amazing grace and how He can restore and make new that which was lost.” — Francine Rivers, New York Times bestselling author Sweet inspirational romance Full-length stand-alone novel Includes discussion questions for book clubs and a note to readers from the author

Book excerpt: In World War II, the Eighth Air Force sent up thousands of men into the skies over Fortress Europe. Stories have been written about the fighter pilots who took on the mighty Luftwaffe one on one. And many stories are about the pilots, gunners, and bombardiers who manned the bombers that flew their missions through the flak filled skies. This book is the story of a man who served with the 91st Bomb Group, and who was like the other men who found their lives and their worlds changed by the greatest conflict in world history. His story, and stories of other airmen and ground crew personnel, are brought to life with the aid of over 100 photographs from WWII. *************In reading this book, life with the 91st Bomb Group is relived as the author walks in his fathers footsteps. The author, the son of a B-17 radio operator, has paid tribute to his father in this well researched, well illustrated, and well written tale of his dads tour of duty with the Mighty Eighth . A must read for every B-17 and World War II buff! (Martin Garrin, Jr., 410th Bomb Squadron, 94th Bomb Group, Captain/Pilot of the Spirit of Valley Forge .) ******* A well written story of life in the Eighth Air Force. Mike has expertly blended historical and technical information with his fathers story and those of other veterans of the air war over Europe. The numerous photos included from the WWII time period allow the reader to become part of the story, to experience life on the base, and life in the air with the bomber crews. Book excerpt: As seen on PBS’s POV An unprecedented guide to helping black boys achieve success at every stage of their lives—at home, at school, and in the world Regardless of how wealthy or poor their parents are, all black boys must confront and surmount the “achievement gap”: a divide that shows up not only in our sons’ test scores, but in their social and emotional development, their physical well-being, and their outlook on life. As children, they score as high on cognitive tests as their peers, but at some point, the gap emerges. Why? This is the question Joe Brewster, M.D., and Michèle Stephenson asked when their own son, Idris, began struggling in a new school. As they filmed his experiences for their award-winning documentary American Promise, they met an array of researchers who had not only identified the reasons for the gap, but had come up with practical, innovative solutions to close it. In Promises Kept, they explain • how to influence your son’s brain before he’s even born • how to tell the difference between authoritarian and authoritative discipline—and why it matters • how to create an educational program for your son that matches his needs • how to prepare him for explicit and implicit racism in school and in the wider world • how to help your child develop resilience, self-discipline, emotional intelligence, and a positive outlook that will last a lifetime Filled with innovative research, practical strategies, and the voices of parents and children who are grappling with these issues firsthand, Promises Kept will challenge your assumptions and inspire you to make sure your child isn’t lost in the gap. Praise for Promises Kept “The authors offer a plethora of information and advice geared toward the specific developmental needs of black boys. . . . Thorough and detailed, this guidebook is also a call to action. As Brewster sees it, when people of color remain complacent, they not only break a tacit promise to future generations to achieve social equity, they also imperil the futures of both the nation and the planet. A practical and impassioned parenting guide.”—Kirkus Reviews “A penetrating look at the standard practices, at school and at home, that contribute to the achievement gap between the races and the sexes that seems to put black boys at a disadvantage. [Brewster and Stephenson] debunk myths and offer ten parenting and education strategies to improve the prospects for black boys to help them overcome racial stereotypes and low expectations. . . . This is a practical and insightful look at the particular challenges of raising black males.”—Booklist

In 1942 he was sent to the Anhalt labor camp near Auschwitz, and then to five other labor camps: Markstadt, Ludwigsdorf (a munitions factory), Graditz, Langenbielau, and Faulbrück. At the last two camps he was sent to work in a parachute factory. There, he was sentenced to death by a German civil court for arson, but the SS claimed jurisdiction over him because he was a number and not a person, thereby saving him. He was liberated by the Russians in May 1945 and emigrated to the U.S. in 1949. An appendix on pp. 153-174 relates the fate of the Piotrkow Jews in the Holocaust.

Would the pitcher ever strike out that last batter? As he stood there he dreamed, wouldn't it be great if we could have uniforms & a stadium just like the big leaguers? He could almost hear the crowds cheer as he envisioned a home run over the center field fence. That dream stayed locked away until one warm summer afternoon when Carl Stotz was playing catch with his two nephews. He made them a promise, the promise that grew to become one of America's best known & most enduring institutions, Little League baseball. Though there are others who have claimed to be co-founders, the concept, the first baseball diamond for boys, their uniforms, & the right ball all originated with Carl Stotz. He made the rules, found the money, & organized his friends to form the first Little League in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Filled with his favorite stories & photos of the early years, this is Carl's story. This is the story of how Little League came to be, by the man who started it all. Book excerpt: What would you do when duty and desire collide? Long ago, Kenzie McPhee was in love. She was to marry Arran, the eldest son of the McCaskills, and bring peace to their clans forevermore. Only fate had other ideas... Instead of peace, the two clans fell into a bloody feud. At the height of the conflict, Kenzie was spirited away to begin a new life far to the south, and after many years, the scars of her childhood faded into distant memory. Until a letter arrives, containing an offer of peace between their families; a proposition that can only be sealed by marrying the now Laird Arran McCaskill... the very man she'd spent a lifetime trying to forget. A second chance at love, or an opening of old wounds? Blaine McCaskill, brother to the Laird, has grown into a respected soldier, wrapped in his precious duty. It's a far cry from his youth, where he juggled the demands of a brutal father with a secret, unrequited love for Kenzie McPhee. So now, when he is ordered by the Laird to escort Kenzie home for the wedding, Blaine must enter a different type of battlefield, where the only enemy is himself - and the stakes are higher than he's ever known - to ensure the fragile peace is preserved. But with the backdrop of a greater war threatening to engulf the entire Highlands, will Blaine and Kenzie do their duty, or will a forbidden desire risk more than they could possibly imagine? A Promise to Be Kept is a HEA historical romance of 90,000 words, set in the Scottish Highlands. It's an exploration of love set amidst war, hope, and circumstance.
