Book excerpt: Landry Simon brought a lawsuit against four prominent Louisiana families over whether the lands, which were stolen by their ancestors from his, could be recovered from those who own the lands and assets today or, more specifically, should the poor descendants of today be compensated for their forefathers losses, based on the development of those lands and assets, which in some cases, have produced billions of dollars in revenue. The jury will decide if the well-off descendants today owe anything morally, ethically, or legally to the poor descendants today, because of the cheating, lying, and cunningness of the wealthy land-grabbers of the past. In the meantime, citizens in both communities are growing increasingly agitated at the testimony revelations each day. Tensions have grown to the extent that some high school students organize protests against the police, school, city hall, and wealthy neighborhoods to take back what they perceive to be their inheritance. As a result of the students actions, two people have been shot, triggering a visit by the national office of the NAACP to assess the magnitude of the problem. The president has been briefed on the trials progress but has made no public statements about the possible implications if the jury decided to vote in favor of the plaintiffs petition. You are part of the juryyou must decide!

The book carries the reader on a journey through the lives of these two friends and the life choices that set them on different courses, one to the battlefield of Vietnam and the other in pursuit of a career in the field of law. When Buddy learns that Robert has been wounded in the war, his quest to locate his friend and come to his aid meets with a number of obstacles, but he is driven to keep the promise he made to his childhood friend. In his "must read" book, Sherman takes us back to an era when "a man's word was his bond" and shows the lengths one man will go to honor the love and commitment that defines the word "friend." C. Anthony Sherman, a native Texan, born in Crockett and raised in the Fifth Ward, is also known at home and abroad as Tony Sherman, the artist and sculptor. He taught himself to write while serving in the US Air Force. As a B-52 Bomber Crew Chief, he wrote for several military publications while flying around the world. He continued to write on a part-time basis as a hobby until 1988 when he studied creative writing at USL in Lafayette, Louisiana. His notoriety, however, comes from his artistic talent as he and his wife traveled the country selling his paintings and sculptures at conventions and other art shows. Writing became his creative passion since he met with the famed writer, Alex Haley, author of Roots. During the brief encounter they had, Mr. Haley told Tony to never stop writing. Tony was so impressed by the historical works of Mr. Haley, he committed to finish a fictional trilogy of the Sins of My Fathers and a body of story ideas, as a tribute to Mr. Haley's inspiration.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the former director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, how to manage your business in the face of challenge, change, and potential disaster For James Lee Witt, the man who rebuilt America's emergency response system, the most inspiring and effective lessons--about responsibility, team building, planning, and taking action--have guided real-life heroes through extraordinary situations. These lessons can be applied to business to guide you through the pressures you face each week--or once in a career or a lifetime. Whether describing earthquake preparation in California, moving a Missouri town out of a floodplain, or shoring up walls and spirits after the Oklahoma City bombing, Witt captures the moments when leaders step forward, how they motivate others, and what they need to triumph over adversity. Witt's home-spun wisdom teaches us to "Tear Down the Stovepipes" to build effective teamwork by thinking horizontally, not vertically; to find energizing people who improve morale, whether a V.P.'s secretary or a key client, since "A Lightning Rod Works Both Ways"; and to establish systems for capturing what happens--what goes right and what goes wrong--to ensure that every challenge leaves you "Stronger in the Broken Places." To bring home the ten lessons in this inspiring and useful book, Witt shares examples and strategies from corporations--from Malden Mills and Intel to Swissair and Kmart--who have overcome crisis by applying the same principles to their business every day.
