This book was released on 1977 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study is the fourth in the Environmental Contaminants Inventory Series. The first chapter contains an introduction to and summary of the material detailed throughout the report. The second and third chapters review the literature on ortho-phthalic acid esters (PAEs) in the environment and their effects on human health. By combining information on exposure and toxicity, an attempt is made to assess the present hazard to human health and the environment posed by observed levels of PAEs in the environment. In the fourth chapter, the production and use of PAEs in Canada is analyzed for the year 1973. The fifth chapter covers the releases of PAEs to the environment from production and processing, and from the use and disposal of articles that contain PAEs. Estimates indicate that in 1973 releases from production and processing activities comprised approximately 20% of the total, whereas use and disposal activities accounted for the remaining 80%. These releases have been presented in terms of major drainage basins to give the data more regional significance. The sixth chapter reviews the chemistry and properties of PAEs, the major processes used in producing and fabricating flexibilized (plasticized) poly (vinyl chloride) and the use of related chemicals such as phthalic anhydride and terephthalic acid. The final chapter summarizes the conclusions and recommendations based on the findings of this study. Throughout the report, the data are clarified through the use of a material flow chart, tables, and maps"--Abstract, page vii.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of the IARC Monographs provides an assessment of the carcinogenicity of 18 chemicals present in industrial and consumer products or food (natural constituents, contaminants, or flavorings) or occurring as water-chlorination by-products. The compounds evaluated include the widely used plasticizer di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and the food contaminant 4-methylimidazole. In view of the limited agent-specific information available from epidemiological studies, the IARC Monographs Working Group relied mainly on carcinogenicity bioassays, and mechanistic and other relevant data to evaluate the carcinogenic hazards to humans exposed to these agents.

Book excerpt: Endocrine Disruption and Human Health starts with an overview of what endocrine disruptors are, the issues surrounding them, and the source of these chemicals in the ecosystem. This is followed by an overview of the mechanisms of action and assay systems. The third section includes chapters written by specialists on different aspects of concern for the effects of endocrine disruption on human health. Finally, the authors consider the risk assessment of endocrine disruptors and the pertinent regulation developed by the EU, the US FDA, as well as REACH and NGOs. The book has been written for researchers and research clinicians interested in learning about the actions of endocrine disruptors and current evidence justifying concerns for human health but is useful for those approaching the subject for the first time, graduate students, and advanced undergraduate students. - Provides readers with access to a range of information from the basic mechanisms and assays to cutting-edge research investigating concerns for human health - Presents a comprehensive, translational look at all aspects of endocrine disruption and its effects on human health - Offers guidance on the risk assessment of endocrine disruptors and current relevant regulatory considerations

Does the identification number 1035 indicate ethane or butane? What is the difference between natural gas transmission pipelines and natural gas distribution pipelines? If you came upon an overturned truck on the highway that was leaking, would you be able to identify if it was hazardous and know what steps to take? Questions like these and more are answered in the Emergency Response Guidebook. Learn how to identify symbols for and vehicles carrying toxic, flammable, explosive, radioactive, or otherwise harmful substances and how to respond once an incident involving those substances has been identified. Always be prepared in situations that are unfamiliar and dangerous and know how to rectify them. Keeping this guide around at all times will ensure that, if you were to come upon a transportation situation involving hazardous substances or dangerous goods, you will be able to help keep others and yourself out of danger. With color-coded pages for quick and easy reference, this is the official manual used by first responders in the United States and Canada for transportation incidents involving dangerous goods or hazardous materials.

Book excerpt: Phthalates are esters of phthalic acid and are a group of chemicals of high environmental relevance due to their production rates and ecotoxicological potential. Phthalates are mainly used as plasticizers in PVC plastics, wherein many consumer products contain specific members of this family of chemicals. In this book, the authors present current research on the chemical properties and impacts on health and the environment of phthalates. Topics include phthalate contamination in two estuaries from the Basque Coast; bioaccumulation and intracellular signal modifications of in vivo and in vitro models of phthalate esters; DEHP behavior in contact with liquid food simulants, blood, saliva and soil; removal of phthalates from the environment; gas phase fragmentation reactions of phthalate ions; the effects of DEHP exposure on brain development; and phthalate toxicogenomics and health effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aromatic organic hydrocarbons and heterocycles represent a bulk of about one third of all industrially produced organic basic materials. Aromatic compounds such as benzene, phenol, naphthalene, anthracene, and their homologues, are derived from raw materials, coal, crude oil and biogenic resources by thermal and catalytic refining processes. This book introduces the chemistry of aromatics with a brief discussion of the aromatic character and a survey of historical aspects, particularly the development of the organic dye industry during the 19th century. The main emphasis of the book is to give a clear prospect of industrial processes for the production and the derivatisation of aromatics with consistent flow diagrams. Economical aspects of by- and side-products are especially regarded. For the most important aromatics an analysis of the international market included their derivatives: polymers, pesticides, dyes, pigments and drugs. Professional scientists, managers and students in chemistry and chemical engineering will find a wealth of information for their career and daily work.
