Book excerpt: In a North-South model of international trade in intermediate inputs, we analyze the ways firms procure their inputs in the presence of relationship-specific investments and incomplete contracts. Production is sequential such that an upstream input is used to produce a downstream input, which is then used to produce a final output. Three types of agents are involved in production: upstream suppliers, downstream suppliers and final-good producers (firms). Based on their productivity, final-good producers decide where to source inputs in each production stage and while doing so, they also choose their organizational mode (vertical integration versus outsourcing) to alleviate the hold-up problem that stems from contract incompleteness. We show that these decisions are connected between stages such that the sourcing location of the upstream input may affect the organizational choice in the downstream stage due to the asymmetry in the hold-up friction between the North and South. We then examine how within sectoral heterogeneity and variations in industry characteristics influence the relative prevalence of firms that choose to (i) procure inputs from different locations, and (ii) form different organizational structures.

On the other hand, non-excludability problem may be solved by tie-in transactions or by indirect transaction via a third party. Such contractual arrangements do not require direct governmental involvement. Non-excludability may also be resolved by establishing formal/informal rules for use exclusion and/or income right to the provided service. Establishment of such property right institutions always involves customer ownership of some forms. Therefore, difficulties/costs associated with collective decision-making by diverse interests serve as the key determinant to the final outcome of public good provision. Finally, the empirical study focus on three types of dams: navigation, wildlife conservation, and flood control. Based on the theory proposed in this dissertation, some hypotheses for the ownership patterns of dams are derived and tested for the evaluation of my theoretical underpinnings.

Sanyal, who was an excellent educator and renowned scholar in the field of international economics. One of his research papers co-authored with Ronald Jones, entitled “The Theory of Trade in Middle Products” and published in American Economic Review in 1982, was a seminal work in the field of international trade theory. This paper would go on to inspire many subsequent significant works by researchers across the globe on trade in intermediate goods. The larger impact of any paper, beyond the number of citations, lies in terms of the passion it sparks among younger researchers to pursue new questions. Measured by this yardstick, Sanyal’s contribution in trade theory will undoubtedly be regarded as historic. After completing his Ph.D. at the University of Rochester he joined the Department of Economics at Calcutta University in the early 1980s and taught trade theory there for almost three decades. His insights, articulation and brilliance in teaching international economics have influenced and shaped the intellectual development of many of his students. After his sudden passing in February 2012, his students and colleagues organized a symposium in his honour at the Department of Economics, Jadavpur University from April 19 to 20, 2012. This book, a small tribute to his intellect and contribution, has been a follow-up on that endeavour, and a collective effort of many people including his teachers, friends, colleagues and students. In a nutshell it discusses intermediation of various kinds with significant implications for market integration through trade and finance.
