Book Synopsis Metal Matrix Composites by Friction Stir Processing by : Ranjit Bauri
Download or read book Metal Matrix Composites by Friction Stir Processing written by Ranjit Bauri and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2017-08-10 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Metal Matrix Composites by Friction Stir Processing discusses the capabilities of utilizing friction stir processing (FSP) as a tool to manufacture new materials, such as composites. FSP is considered a tool for grain refinement. However, this work illustrates how FSP has a wider capability due to the material flow and mixing the process offers. This book highlights such aspects by demonstrating the ability of the process to incorporate a second phase and make metal matrix composites (MMCs). The book covers the current research on processing MMCs by FSP, and presents a novel approach of making ductile MMCs by FSP using metal particle reinforcements. - Demonstrates how friction stir processing can be used to make metal matrix composites - Includes a review of different approaches of making metal matrix composites by friction stir processing - Demonstrates the utility of friction stir processing in making new types of non-equilibrium ductile composites - Provides a comparison of properties of friction stir processed composites to those of conventional metal matrix composites
Book Synopsis Physical Metallurgy and processing of Intermetallic Compounds by : N.S. Stoloff

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 690 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attractive physical and mechanical properties of ordered intermetallic alloys have been recognized since early in this century. However, periodic attempts to develop intermetallics for structural applications were unsuc cessful, due in major part to the twin handicaps of inadequate low-temper ature ductility or toughness, together with poor elevated-temperature creep strength. The discovery, in 1979, by Aoki and Izumi in Japan that small additions of boron caused a dramatic improvement in the ductility of Ni3Al was a major factor in launching a new wave of fundamental and applied research on intermetallics. Another important factor was the issuance in 1984 of a National Materials Advisory Board reported entitled "Structural Uses for Ductile Ordered Alloys," which identified numerous potential defense-related applications and proposed the launching of a coordinated development program to gather engineering property and processing data. A substantial research effort on titanium aluminides was already underway at the Air Force Materials Laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio and, with Air Force support, at several industrial and university laboratories. Smaller programs also were under way at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, under Department of Energy sponsorship. These research efforts were soon augmented in the United States by funding from Department of Defense agencies such as Office of Naval Research and Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and by the National Science Foundation.

Download or read book Science of Sintering written by H. Palmour III and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, SCIENCE OF SINTERING: NEW DIRECTIONS FOR MATERIALS PROCESSING AND MICROSTRUCTURAL CONTROL, contains the edited Proceedings of the Seventh World Round Table Conference on Sintering, held in Herceg-Novi, Yugoslavia, Aug. 28 - Sept. 1, 1989. It was organized by the International Institute for the Science of Sintering (IISS), headquartered in Belgrade, Yugoslavia. Every fourth year since 1969, the Institute has organized such a Round Table Conference on Sintering; each has taken place at some selected location within Yugoslavia. A separate series of IISS Topical Sintering Symposia (Summer Schools) have also been held at four year intervals, but they have been offset by about two years, so they occur between the main Conferences. As a rule, the Topical Sintering Symposia have been devoted to more specific topics and they also take place in different countries. The aim of these Conferences and their related "Summer Schools" has been to bring together scientists from all over the world who work in various fields of science and technology concerned with sintering and sintered materials. A total of seven IISS Conferences have been held over the period 1969-1989, and they have been supplemented by the four Topical Sintering Symposia held in Yugoslavia, Poland, India and Japan (in 1975, 1979, 1983 and 1987, respectively). This most recent five day Conference addressed the fundamental scientific background as well as the technological state-of-the-art pertinent to science of sintering and high technology sintered materials.

Book Synopsis Low-density, High-strength Intermetallic Matrix Composites by XD (trademark) Synthesis by :
Download or read book Low-density, High-strength Intermetallic Matrix Composites by XD (trademark) Synthesis written by and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is an increasing need for lightweight high performance materials in today's aerospace arena. High temperature engine designs, for example, require engine materials with elevated temperature strength, creep resistance, damage tolerance, oxidation resistance, and low density. Ordered intermetallics are considered potential alternatives to superalloys because they exhibit many of these properties. A major problem with most ordered alloys is their tendency toward inherently low ductility. The reasons can be quite varied depending on the alloy system, and include poor grain-boundary cohesion, an insufficient number of available slip systems (primarily in non-cubic alloys), limited cross slip, and impurity locking of dislocations. However, intermetallics of high symmetry, such as the L12 structure, have a number of slip systems, which can provide some plasticity, at least at intermediate temperatures, thus enabling the matrix to accommodate some of the strain associated with the thermal stresses.

Book Synopsis Emerging Engineering Materials by : Mel Schwartz
Download or read book Emerging Engineering Materials written by Mel Schwartz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1996-03-21 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Author's Preface The rapid advances in Materials Science and Engineering . . . have convinced many that the design, production and use of advanced materials will shape future manufacturing industries. Competitive advantage within entire industries is shaped by the quality of the materials available to the manufacturers; the early availability of a new material can be leveraged manyfold. In addition, advanced materials or advanced materials processing can signal the birth or death of entire industries, and access to higher quality and lower cost material has permitted some countries to obtain market dominance in several key industries. Much of the new strategy entails harnessing the potential of innovative technology, that is, going back to the nano and molecular states of materials and new, effective ways to create, process, and eventually use them. Rather than being concerned with a relatively small number of generic materials, each possessing a broad range of uses, the materials sector is increasingly concerned with tailoring a growing list of ever more specialized materials for narrow niche applications. New products with better growth prospects such as high-performance alloys, composites, laminates, and a variety of coatings have been emphasized. Materials firms also have sought ways to overcome the weaknesses of ceramics and fully exploit their formidable strengths. "Functional materials" that do more than support structures have been developed for use in sophisticated electronic, optical, magnetic, and biotech applications. This book will . . . show what materials will be available in the next decade or two, in addition to those currently available and their effect on material design, start-up, and production processes.
