Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Significance of the Problem of Knowledge This situation creates a condition favorable to taking stock of the question as it stands; to inquiring what this interest, prolonged for over three centuries, in the possibility and nature of knowledge, stands for; what the conviction as to the necessity of the union of sen sation and thought, together with the inability to reach conclusions regarding the nature of the union, signifies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of Knowledge If I were to undertake to make complete acknowledgment of my indebtedness to others for stimulus and direction in connection with the study of the problems discussed in this volume, I should want to begin by referring to my first teacher of philosophy, Professor James Ten Broeke, of McMaster University, Toronto. But where to end I should scarcely know. I shall therefore mention only those whom I have to thank for one direct service or another in connection with the actual production of the present volume. Through the kindness of my former teachers, Professors J. R. Angell and A. W. Moore, of the University of Chicago; of my colleagues. Professors E. W. Hopkins, A. K. Rogers, and C. A. Bennett, of Yale University; of my former colleagues in Yale University, Professor W.E. Hocking (now of Harvard University) and Dr. H. T. Costello (now of Columbia University); and, finally, of Professor R. B. Perry, of Harvard University, and Professor D. S. Miller, of the General Theological Seminary, New York, various portions of the volume have been read in the manuscript, and as a result not a few helpful criticisms and suggestions have been received. I am particularly indebted to Dr. Costello in connection with the references to the logisticians in the last chapter. It should not be concluded, however, that here, or elsewhere in the book, any one except the author is to be held responsible for any of the opinions expressed. For friendly counsel and other manifestations of kindly interest in connection with the publishing of the work I am grateful to Dean Shailer Mathews, of the University of Chicago, and Professor E.Hershey Sneath, of Yale University. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Truth and Reality: An Introduction to the Theory of Knowledge IT is my hope that this volume may serve a pur pose as an introduction to the theory of knowledge. While we have pretentious works covering the field of logic and epistemology, we are not so well supplied with books giving a general survey of the main problems in volved in the investigation of truth. The time seems peculiarly ripe for such an effort. In the bewildering amount of discussion and misunderstanding to which the pragmatic movement has led, there is need for fresh em phasis of the main issues. There is also need for building out the pragmatic theory in neglected directions. In a small way, this book tries to serve both purposes. This book is intended to be used in connection with a course in elementary logic or as an introduction or sequel to it. It is hoped that its human interest will also make it available for the general philosophic reader and as an introduction to philosophy. To the cultured public, not technically trained in philosophy, the first and the last chapters may be of special interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory of Thought and Knowledge Tms work does not aim to give an elaborate system of philosophy, but only to expound and recommend a certain way of looking at the problems of thought and knowledge. If we get the right point of view we can see for ourselves without waiting to be told. There are certain fundamental principles which underlie the problems in question, and the aim has been to bring them to light. The things which might be said are numberless, but, having due regard to the shortness of life, it has seemed to me that the discussion of principles is more profitable at present than the bulkiest col lections of details. Besides, we have them already. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Knowledge The following essay is intended to call attention to an aspect of knowledge which has been very generally overlooked. Its importance was not evident until the theory of evolution came into prominence and, although that theory has now been expounded in regard to a great variety of subjects, I have not yet found any statement of its application to epistemology. Book Synopsis The Organization of Knowledge by : Glenn Negley
Download or read book The Organization of Knowledge written by Glenn Negley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-21 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Organization of Knowledge: An Introduction to Philosophical Analysis The implications of such an endeavor soon make evident the advisability of approaching the problem from an ele mentary level. It would require Inconceivable genius to do today what Aristotle did for the ancient world: organ ize and co-ordinate such diverse fields as physics, meteor ology, psychology, biology, ethics, and logic. These integrated general courses afford one of the few available sources of authoritative information, which at the same time is not so specific and technical as to demand special ized competence for an understanding of the description of scientific method and knowledge. Throughout this experimental Speculation, the assumption has remained dominant that the sciences must themselves be taken as the source of information about their content and method; philosophers and logicians have often been loath to grant this minimum of independence to their collaborators in the field of knowledge. In fact, it is this very independ ence of competence allotted to fields of scientific observa tion that poses the problem of organizing knowledge for action. The degree of competence which we now expect from any expert or specialist precludes the expectation that he will be an expert in more than an extremely limited area. This does not, of course, imply that the expert need confine his interest or attention wholly to the area of his expertness; but it does mean that the extent and complexity of knowledge have now become so great that to ambiv alize is to court the charge of inexpertness, and to gen eralize is to be convicted of the charge. Book Synopsis Where Knowledge Fails (Classic Reprint) by : Earl Barnes
Download or read book Where Knowledge Fails (Classic Reprint) written by Earl Barnes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-21 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Where Knowledge Fails IT IS the aim of this series to bring to gether chapters of vital thinking on the immediate problems men and women must face in the supreme art of living. The basal one of these, upon which all others rest, is the problem of faith or religion. What one ultimately believes and feels about one's relation to the universe finds expression in every deed. Thus faith is the base-line on which is erected the superstructure of conduct. It would be comforting if we could solve all the great enigmas and rest quietly on a finished theory of the universe, but such certainty is not neces sary to noble living. Indeed, it may even be questioned whether it would be morally to our advantage to prove all we would like to prove. To stand. Download or read book A Study of Origins written by Edmond De Pressensé and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Origins: Or the Problems of Knowledge, of Being and of Duty IT is due to my readers that I should explain how I was led to enter on the discussion of the philosophical and scientific questions of the day. At the time when I was preparing the revision of my History of the first three Centuries of the Church, I was struck, more than I had ever been before, with the increasing vehemence of the attacks made, not only on Christian theism, but on the very foundations of spiritual religion. If we are to believe the men who come forward as the recognised organs of the scientific world, we must conclude that all that has been afi'irmed by the disciples of the Gospel and the philosophers who believe in a God, in the soul, in a future life, in the morality of duty, is but an empty dream. Our aspirations after a higher world are, to use the figure of one of this school, but as dead leaves whirled aloft into the air, which fall back upon the hand that flung them. Everything is to be reduced to energy, ever transmuted yet ever the same. That which we take to be thought and consciousness is nothing more than a combination of associated sensations. Ai though these oracular assertions did not for one moment. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
