Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the fact that the incidence of gastric cancer is declining in the Western world, it remains a significant problem with respect to accurate diagnosis and treatment since it has a high mortality rate. In June 1989 an International Conference was held at the University of Rome "La Sapienza" entitled "New Trends in Gastric Cancer: Background and videosurgery". During this meeting background information on the aetiopathogenesis of gastric cancer was presented together with talks and video presentations on the latest advances in the treatment of gastric carcinoma, both from the European and Japanese experience. Because of the poor prognosis of gastric carcinoma there is increasing pressure for early detection. Some of the problems in the early detection of gastric carcinoma are discussed together with methods of surveillance of high-risk subjects. It is generally accepted that the surgical approach to gastric carcinoma should take into account the site and extent of the lesion and there are chapters on new methods for pre and intraoperative staging of the disease which allow a more logical approach to surgery. A comparison between Japanese and Western rule and results was attempted and reasons for the differences were investigated. Since the field is still evolving not all aspects could be covered, and those angles not approached in this book will be addressed in a second International Conference to be held in Rome in June 1990.

Book Synopsis Management of Gastric Cancer by : Paul H. Sugarbaker
Download or read book Management of Gastric Cancer written by Paul H. Sugarbaker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gastric cancer has been one of the great malignant scourges affecting man kind for as long as medical records have been kept. Until operative resection pioneered by Bilroth and others became available, no effective treatment was feasible and death from cancer was virtually inevitable. Even with resection by total gastrectomy, the chances of tumor eradication remained small. Over recent years, however, the situation has been changing. Some changes have resulted from better understanding of the disease, early detec tion, and better management techniques with applied clinical research, but the reasons for other changes are poorly understood. For example, the incidence of gastric cancer is decreasing, especially in westernized societies, where it has fallen from one of the most common cancers to no longer being in the top five causes of cancer death. Still it remains the number one killer of adult males in Japan and Korea. Whether the reduced incidence in western societies is a result of dietary changes or methods of food preservation, or some other reason, is as yet uncertain. Improvements in outcome have been reported from mass screening and early detection; more refined techniques of establishing early diagnosis, tumor type, and tumor extent; more radical surgical resection; and resection at earlier stages of disease.

Book excerpt: Early diagnosis of cancer and other non-oncological disorders gives a significant advantage for curing the disease and improving patient’s life expectancy. Recent advances in biosensor-based techniques which are designed for specific biomarkers can be exploited for early diagnosis of diseases. Biosensor Based Advanced Cancer Diagnostics covers all available biosensor-based approaches and comprehensive technologies; along with their application in diagnosis, prognosis and therapeutic management of various oncological disorders. Besides this, current challenges and future aspects of these diagnostic approaches have also been discussed. This book offers a view of recent advances and is also helpful for designing new biosensor-based technologies in the field of medical science, engineering and biomedical technology. Biosensor Based Advanced Cancer Diagnostics helps biomedical engineers, researchers, molecular biologists, oncologists and clinicians with the development of point of care devices for disease diagnostics and prognostics. It also provides information on developing user friendly, sensitive, stable, accurate, low cost and minimally invasive modalities which can be adopted from lab to clinics. This book covers in-depth knowledge of disease biomarkers that can be exploited for designing and development of a range of biosensors. The editors have summarized the potential cancer biomarkers and methodology for their detection, plus transferring the developed system to clinical application by miniaturization and required integration with microfluidic systems. Covers design and development of advanced platforms for rapid diagnosis of cancerous biomarkers Takes a multidisciplinary approach to sensitive transducers development, nano-enabled advanced imaging, miniaturized analytical systems, and device packaging for point-of-care applications Offers an insight into how to develop cost-effective diagnostics for early detection of cancer

Download or read book Gastric Cancer written by Mitsumasa Nishi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 451 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gastric cancer is still the most common cause of cancer death in the world, although in most countries, with the notable exception of the United States, its incidence is slowly declining. In statistical terms, gastric cancer is therefore the most formidable of cancer types, and its control is a pressing issue. Recent evidence indicates that the conversion of normal cells to so-called "clinical cancer" is the prerequisite for a multistage process which is intimately associated with an accumulation of multiple gene alterations including both oncogenes and tumor-suppressor genes. Gastric cancer is no exception, in that it reveals multiple gene changes whose scenario differs, depending on their occurrence in intestinal-type or diffuse-type gastric cancers. This book was planned for publication by the Japanese Research Society for Gastric Cancer in order to shed light on basic research and clinical practice in gastric cancer. The individual chapters, written by a variety of experts, contain numerous new topics related to all aspects of the disease, including epidemiology, experimental carcinogenesis, pathology, biology, diagnosis, and treatment. It is hoped that this book will be of use in basic research, pathological diagnosis, early detection, and therapy of gastric cancer. We would like to thank the staff of Springer-Verlag Tokyo for the excellent technical production.
