Book Synopsis The Problem: Instantaneously Effecting Controlled Balloon-system Descent from High Altitude by : James F. Dwyer
Download or read book The Problem: Instantaneously Effecting Controlled Balloon-system Descent from High Altitude written by James F. Dwyer and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need for a technique of instantaneously effect controlled balloon-system descent from high altitude prompted the development efforts reported herein. The background, the approach, test flight data, and the technical problems that frustrated the successful development of the desired technique are included. A simplified model of the shape of a partially full balloon is presented (a model that should also approximate the dimensions of subpressure shapes). Some heretofore unpublished information on apex valve characteristics and subpressure effects are included together with recommendations for any future work of this problem. Significant supplementary findings and historical perspectives are noted. (Author).

Book Synopsis Factors Affecting the Vertical Motion of a Zero-pressure, Polyethylene, Free Balloon by : James F. Dwyer
Download or read book Factors Affecting the Vertical Motion of a Zero-pressure, Polyethylene, Free Balloon written by James F. Dwyer and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper critiques existing aerodynamic-thermodynamic models for predicting the vertical motion of free balloon systems. It demonstrates that: a) the aerodynamic drag coefficient model should be based on Froude number and fractional volume as well as Reynolds number; b) there has been a widespread error in definition of the instantaneous mass of the balloon film involved in the heat transfer process; c) the gas bubble cannot be modelled as a sphere; d) the gas bubble is asymmetrical except when near or at its natural ceiling altitude; and e) the actual gas bubble shape, and most probably the added mass, is directly related to the type of gore pattern. Finally, a procedure is proposed for the analysis of actual flight data to enable the development of a practical, but also theoretically sound, model of the aerodynamic drag coefficient of a zero-pressure, free balloon- and subsequent refinement of the heat transfer models for direct and reflected solar energy.

Book Synopsis Analyzing the Effects of Topography on High-altitude Balloon Descent by : Elizabeth Carlson
Download or read book Analyzing the Effects of Topography on High-altitude Balloon Descent written by Elizabeth Carlson and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project was developed to improve upon an experimentally-based descent prediction program for high-altitude balloon payloads at the Montana Space Grant Consortium’s Balloon Outreach, Research, Exploration And Landscape Imaging System (BOREALIS) program. The high-altitude balloon payloads were launched from flat tarmacs but generally landed in or near mountainous terrain. Terrain has a significant effect on air flow, and thus this project was developed in order to improve the accuracy of the predicted landing latitude and longitude. The project was broken into two parts. The first part was simplifying and solving the Navier-Stokes equations to predict an external wind field incorporating the effects of topography. Since the payload would be entering a steady velocity field, we deduced, with the support of external research, that we could simplify the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes equations. Our final simplified equations were solved on a 100 × 100 grid. The second portion was tracking the position of the payload through the grid using interpolation techniques and Newtonian physics.

Book Synopsis Modified Gas Valve for Improved Balloon Descent Control by : George F. Nolan
Download or read book Modified Gas Valve for Improved Balloon Descent Control written by George F. Nolan and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ability to control balloon descent rates has been improved through use of a modified gas valve which has a range of openings. The descent rates obtained with this valve are more constant than those obtainable with the standard gas valve. Atmospheric temperature lapse rate and other thermal and aerodynamic influences are unquantifiable factors affecting balloon vertical motion, but are better compensated for when use is made of a variable opening gas valve. Even with this valve, slow descents on the order of 200 fpm or less will have oscillations with short periods of time when ascents and leveling off will occur. (Author).

Book excerpt: This document serves as the third revision of the USAF Parachute Handbook which was first published in 1951. The data and information represent the current state of the art relative to recovery system design and development. The initial chapters describe representative recovery applications, components, subsystems, material, manufacture and testing. The final chapters provide empirical data and analytical methods useful for predicting performance and presenting a definitive design of selected components into a reliable recovery system.
