Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem Elementary Composition: Suggestions for Its Solution These chapters were written for delivery before the Brooklyn Teachers' Association, and without thought of subsequent publication. They are now gathered into a book in response to the request of many interested in elementary composition. It has seemed desirable to retain them in their original form, familiar and unconventional as that is. The writer believes that composition work need not be restricted to the production of written themes, but that it may include speaking as well as writing, work by a little community as well as work by individuals, and interesting conversations to rouse thought and deepen feeling. Another chapter might have been added, on the subject of versification. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beat burnout with time-saving best practices for feedback For ELA teachers, the danger of burnout is all too real. Inundated with seemingly insurmountable piles of papers to read, respond to, and grade, many teachers often find themselves struggling to balance differentiated, individualized feedback with the one resource they are already overextended on—time. Matthew Johnson offers classroom-tested solutions that not only alleviate the feedback-burnout cycle, but also lead to significant growth for students. These time-saving strategies built on best practices for feedback help to improve relationships, ignite motivation, and increase student ownership of learning. Flash Feedback also takes teachers to the next level of strategic feedback by sharing: How to craft effective, efficient, and more memorable feedback Strategies for scaffolding students through the meta-cognitive work necessary for real revision A plan for how to create a culture of feedback, including lessons for how to train students in meaningful peer response Downloadable online tools for teacher and student use Moving beyond the theory of working smarter, not harder, Flash Feedback works deeper by developing practices for teacher efficiency that also boost effectiveness by increasing students’ self-efficacy, improving the clarity of our messages, and ultimately creating a classroom centered around meaningful feedback.

This edition, translated from the original Russian publications by Julia Efron and Jane K. Setlow, contains additional data and observations, not previously published elsewhere, which were added by Vinogradov in the preparation of the translation. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of classification and written composition of story problems on problem solving performance. The research specifically focused on the four problem solving criteria of identifying the notion or type of the problem, representing the problem through an iconic drawing, writing a corresponding equation, and solving the problem correctly. The participants in this study included two classes of second grade students at a suburban school in Connecticut. The study included an experimental group and a control group. The experimental group included twenty-one second grade students and the control group included twenty second grade students. Both groups included students of mixed genders and abilities. The experimental group received instruction in the classification of Thomas Carpenter's seven notions of story problems including reading, writing, and solving problems of the seven types (Carpenter, 1982). Specifically, the class was asked to write and compose their own unique story problems according to the notion type. The control group received direct instruction on addition and subtraction. Students were assessed through pre-assessment, progress monitoring, and post-assessments. Microsoft Excel was used to conduct Analysis of Variance Tests to compare the experimental group and control group. The two groups were specifically compared according to their problem solving performance in the four criteria of identification of notions, iconic representation, written equation, and correct answer. The results of this study showed the students in the experimental group performed significantly higher than the control group within the criteria areas of identifying the notion and iconic representation. There was no statistically significant difference between the groups within the criteria areas of written equation and correct answer. Based on these results, the study concluded there was an effect in instruction of classification and written composition of story problems within certain areas of problem solving performance. There was not enough evidence to conclude an effect on all criteria. This limitation could be due to the control group simultaneously receiving general instruction in story problems according to the school's grade two curriculum. However, according to a qualitative analysis of students' post-assessment responses, it is concluded that the study had an effect on the experimental group's overall problem solving performance and strong foundational understanding of all story problem concepts.
