Excerpt from book: CHAPTER III. Long years of outrage, calumny, and wrong, Imputed madness, prisoned solitude. Byron. During his sojourn in England, we find Prince Napoleon Louis occupied with the publication of works of importance, which, while recommending themselves by the great justness of their views, are based upon the grand principles of liberty and philanthropy, and serve to place their author amongst the number of those writers who are distinguished by their originality of thought. Although the Prince has been put under the interdict of fire and water, as regards the soil of France, he has not been interdieted from that communion of thought, which alone could alleviate the miseries of exile, and render less oppressive that condition which was imposed upon him by the legislature of a people, just about to receive, with transports of joy, the ashes of the head of his family. Thus it was, that banished from all participation in public life, the heart of Prince Napoleon Louis, harassed by the persecutions of which he had been the object, sought by useful labours to divert his mind from the bitter thoughts of exile, at the same time that his equanimity of temper, and his candid and generous disposition, secured him the affection and sympathy of many friends in the midst of all the trials and reverses of fortune. Nearly two years had .elapsed since the arrival of the Prince in England, and it will be remembered, that about that period, (the end of 1839, ) the recollections of the Empire became very lively, and had made great progress in France, and when a mission was appointed to go and seek for the the ashes ofthe Emperor, in order to transport them to Paris, and gloriously to lay his arms upon his bier, all the imperial sympathies, all the Bonapartist feelings and recollections w..

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For well over one hundred years society had considered ways of helping prisoners on their release from prison, but there had been no serious attempt to assess in a scientific manner the value of such efforts. Originally published in 1974, this book broke with this tradition and was the first full-scale work published in this country evaluating carefully whether an active policy of finding suitable employment for men immediately on their release from prison had beneficial results. The first part of the book discusses the historical development of prison after-care from its early origins in the nineteenth century and indicates how, up to the Second World War, the primary object of after-care had been regarded as the reinstatement of the ex-prisoners in employment. Gradually the specific task of finding jobs for ex-prisoners had become a peripheral activity considered as the responsibility of the Department of Employment. The effectiveness of the Department’s pre-release procedure for prisoners is discussed. The rest of the book considers the fascinating Apex project set up to examine the effectiveness of finding work for ex-prisoners. The work of Apex continued to develop and expand, but the present study considers the first five years when over four hundred men were randomly selected from two London prisons and offered the services of a specialist employment agency. The outcome for these men is compared with a control group of over three hundred men randomly selected from the same prisons. This study is concerned with the general run of the prison population and interestingly shows how some prisoners accept and others reject the offer of an employment service. It further indicates the enormous efforts sometimes needed to find suitable employment for prisoners on release. The outcome of the job interviews, arranged in terms of the proportions attending the interviews, starting the jobs and the length of time men stayed in the jobs arranged, is vital reading for anyone involved in after-care. An important part of the work is the examination of the subsequent reconviction rates for the various groups of offenders and the implication that it seems possible to predict men who are unlikely to be helped by the simple provision of employment on release. The final chapter considers critically some of the assumptions upon which the Apex project was based, and the possible use of computer techniques in the individualization of treatment is briefly discussed. The author was particularly well qualified to discuss this subject, for, apart from his work over a number of years with several after-care organizations, the present project involved working in prisons for over three years as well as interviewing and talking to men after their release. The findings of this study will interest the wide variety of people concerned with prison after-care. Criminologists, sociologists, probation officers and all others working in prisons and after-care will recognize the important implications of the material presented in this book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Billy Lafitte, former Deputy-Sheriff and motorcycle gang enforcer, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. For some of his enemies, that's still not enough punishment. Agents Colleen Hartle and Franklin Rome want Lafitte dead so bad, they've put a price on his head--eighteen grand to the first prisoner who takes him out. Gang leader Ri'Chess and Head Prison Guard Garner want to collect, and they don't mind who gets run over while they try--like inmate Bryce West, a pawn for whoever hurts him the most. Lafitte's church-going ex-mother-in-law believes in redemption ... for everyone except Billy, perhaps. But she still believes a son has a right to see the truth about his father, so she brings his boy Ham for what she expects to be their final visit. When they all converge on a half-finished prison on the North Dakota prairie during a blizzard, something bad is bound to happen. The third chapter of the Billy Lafitte saga (following YELLOW MEDICINE and HOGDOGGIN') tests the limits of everyone whose life revolves around this man and all his deeds. He's a shadow of his former self, but he still fights to survive, if only for spite. Sometimes, being the baddest ass of them all isn't worth it.
