Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of the Moral Empire We have still too many gods and no God. Conscience and utility are two gods. So are the inner and the outer world, pride and love, individualism and collectivism. To mention a few more, nations are gods, and classes are gods. It is natural for us to reduce all these dualistic and pluralistic gods to one God. This natural reduction, however, is only possible by means of synthetic creation. A new God fashioned from the substance of all existing gods is the thing which we now badly want. The sense of the dignity of one's own moral person is in need of being so heightened as to stand above all things else. Book excerpt: The Principles of Moral and Christian Philosophy presents the first masterpiece of Scottish Common Sense philosophy. This two-volume treatise is important for its wide range of insights about the nature of the human mind, the foundations of morals, and the relationship between morality and religion. The first volume presents a detailed study of the faculties of the human mind and their interrelations. The second volume presents arguments for the existence of God and for God's infinite perfection. The underlying notion is God's moral government of the world, in which there is recompense for good and evil deeds. George Turnbull (1698-1748) taught at Marischal College, Aberdeen. Book Synopsis Classic Readings and Cases in the Philosophy of Law by : Susan Dimock
Download or read book Classic Readings and Cases in the Philosophy of Law written by Susan Dimock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-16 with total page 1398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With over sixty cases as support, this text presents the philosophy of law as a perpetual series of debates with overlapping lines and cross connections. Using law as a focus to bring into relief many social and political issues of pressing importance in contemporary society, this book encourages readers to think critically and philosophically. Classic Readings and Cases in the Philosophy of Law centers on five major questions: What is law? What, if any, connection must there be between law and morality? When should law be used to restrict the liberty of individuals? To what extent should democratic states permit civil disobedience? What, if anything, justifies the infliction of punishment on those who violate the law? The extensive anthology of cases covers the mundane to the grandest of constitutional issues, including controversial topics like ownership of genetic material, capital punishment, and gay rights. Brief introductions to each case describe the central issue being litigated, the legal reasoning of the justices–both majority and dissenting–the decision of the court, and its philosophical significance.

Book Synopsis Utilitarianism and Empire by : Bart Schultz
Download or read book Utilitarianism and Empire written by Bart Schultz and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2005-08-29 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classical utilitarian legacy of Jeremy Bentham, J. S. Mill, James Mill, and Henry Sidgwick has often been charged with both theoretical and practical complicity in the growth of British imperialism and the emerging racialist discourse of the nineteenth century. But there has been little scholarly work devoted to bringing together the conflicting interpretive perspectives on this legacy and its complex evolution with respect to orientalism and imperialism. This volume, with contributions by leading scholars in the field, represents the first attempt to survey the full range of current scholarly controversy on how the classical utilitarians conceived of 'race' and the part it played in their ethical and political programs, particularly with respect to such issues as slavery and the governance of India. The book both advances our understanding of the history of utilitarianism and imperialism and promotes the scholarly debate, clarifying the major points at issue between those sympathetic to the utilitarian legacy and those critical of it.
Book Synopsis A Conceptual-analytic Study of Classical Indian Philosophy of Morals by : Rajendra Prasad
Download or read book A Conceptual-analytic Study of Classical Indian Philosophy of Morals written by Rajendra Prasad and published by Concept Publishing Company. This book was released on 2008 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using recontructive ideas available in classical Indian original works, this book makes a departure in the style of modern writings on Indian moral philosophy. It presents Indian ethics, in an objective, secular, and wherever necessary, critical manner as a systematic, down-to-earth, philosophical account of moral values, virtues, rights and obligations. It thereby refutes the claim that Indian philosophy has no ethics as well as the counter-claim that it transcends ethics. It demonstrates that moral living proves that the individual, his society and the world are really real and not only taken to be real for behavioral purposes as the Advaitins hold, the self is amoral being a non-agent, moksa is not a moral value, and the Karmic theory, because of involving belief in rebirth, does not fuarantee that the doer of an action is also the experiencer of its results, contrary to what is commonly held, and Indian ethics can sustain itself even if such notions are dropped. Rajendra Prasad calls Indian ethics organismic because, along with ethical concerns, it also covers issues related to professions, politics, administration, sex, environment, etc. Therefore, in one format it is theoretical and applied, normative and metaethical, humanistic and non-humanistic, etc., of course, within the limits of the then cognitive enquiry.

Book Synopsis Indian Ethics by : Purushottama Bilimoria
Download or read book Indian Ethics written by Purushottama Bilimoria and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indian ethics is one of the great traditions of moral thought in world philosophy whose insights have influenced thinkers in early Greece, Europe, Asia, and the New World. This is the first such systematic study of the spectrum of moral reflections from India, engaging a critical cross-cultural perspective and attending to modern secular sensibilities. The volume explores the scope and limits of Indian ethical thinking, reflecting on the interpretation and application of its teachings and practices in the comparative and contemporary contexts. The chapters chart orthodox and heterodox debates, from early classical Hindu texts to Buddhist, Jaina, Yoga, and Gandhian ethics. The range of issues includes: life-values and virtues, karma and dharma, evil and suffering, renunciation and enlightenment; and extends to questions of human rights and justice, ecology and animal ethics, nonviolence and democracy. Ramifications for rethinking ethics in a postmodern and global era are also explored. Indian Ethics offers an invaluable resource for students of philosophy, religion, human sciences and cultural studies, and to those interested in South Asian responses to moral dilemmas in the postcolonial era.

Book Synopsis The Dimensions of Ethics by : Wilfrid J. Waluchow
Download or read book The Dimensions of Ethics written by Wilfrid J. Waluchow and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2003-03-27 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dimensions of Ethics offers a concise but wide-ranging introduction to moral philosophy. In clear and engaging fashion, the author first examines the scope of ethical theory, and explores central metaethical questions such as the issue of relativism, and the relationship between morality and religion. He then turns to an exploration of five theoretical approaches (utilitarianism, the deontological approach of Kant, the ethical pluralism of Ross, virtue ethics, and feminist ethics), in each case providing a consideration of various objections that have been advanced as well as a sympathetic exposition of the core principles of each approach. Throughout he uses a wide range of examples, and integrates references to issues in applied ethics with his discussions of ethical theory.
