Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of English Metre Before plunging into the detailed work for this book I thought that a formula might be stated which would cover the whole range of modern English verse; but it was soon evident that no such simple formula was possible, that metrists have assumed a degree of homogeneity which is not actually found, that there was more complexity than their generalizations would lead one to expect, that there is an underlying law, but something at once less rigid and more comprehensive than any they had yet stated. Johnson's opinion that 'the essence of verse is regularity, and its ornament is variety' is often quoted with approval; but how is this combination effected? Does it mean now one, now the other; law and order prevailing in one part, Bolshevism asserting itself in another; that is to say, the verse sometimes rhythmical, sometimes not? This position I should be unwilling to accept, and I prefer to consider, with the poets themselves, that rhythm is an essential of poetry, and that the freedom is within the rhythmic law, not a violation of it. The most suggestive theorists, I found, were Patmore, Lanier, and Mr. Omond - for the work of the latter, in particular, I have the greatest admiration - but above all I have valued the dicta of poets themselves, and have quoted them freely. This book was released on 1985 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New Theory of Old English Meter sets out a simple new theory of Old English meter that is based on a bare minimum of initial assumptions and metrical principles, and supported by rigorous arguments and by evidence from a computer-assisted analysis of Beowulf and The Battle of Maldon. The new theory is revolutionary in concluding that alliteration rather than stress is the most important feature of the meter, and in rejecting the traditional assumptions of two lifts and four metrical positions per verse. It provides improved solutions for many of the perennial problems of Old English meter, makes possible an elegant logical explanation for the kinds of verses that occur and those which do not occur, and prepares the way for the most radical conclusion of the book: that Old English meter is not based on rhythm.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of English Verse This little book Is designed chiefly for "general readers." To such persons as enjoy poetry, but think they might enjoy it more if they found its metrical structure less bewildering, I think I may safely promise material assistance and satisfaction. English metres are very complicated in detail, but their fundamental principles are simple; and a knowledge of the fundamental principles is suflScient for sympathetic appreciation. My statement of these principles will also, I trust, be of interest to scholars and professional metrists. They will readily detect my indebtedness to many former students of versification, but they will also find some things that are new both in theory and in method. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examines the way in which poetry in English makes use of rhythm. The author argues that there are three major influences which determine the verse-forms used in any language: the natural rhythm of the spoken language itself; the properties of rhythmic form; and the metrical conventions which have grown up within the literary tradition. He investigates these in order to explain the forms of English verse, and to show how rhythm and metre work as an essential part of the reader's experience of poetry.
