Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principle of Official Independence With Particular Reference to the Political History of Canada This book is an attempt to analyse the conception of independence in the modern state -pan idea which, though it finds expression in a multitude of practical forms, has been ignored by the majority of writers on politics. In order to make the discussion more concrete, I have thought it wiser to confine myself to Canadian government, and have only enlarged this sphere when comparison with some other country demanded it. While writing those chapters dealing with the officials of the Canadian state, I have often feared that the text might not accurately portray the actual conditions which exist - a fear based largely on the method of analysis that has been used in discovering the position and powers which the officials occupy and exercise. A quotation from Mr. G. K. Chesterton may make this point more clear: "It is the one great weakness of journalism as a picture of our modern existence, that it must be a picture made up entirely of exceptions. We announce on flaring posters that a man has fallen off a scaffolding. We do not announce on flaring posters that a man has not fallen off a scaffolding. ... That a man has not fallen off a scaffolding is really more sensational; and it is also some thousand times more common. But journalism cannot reason-ably be expected thus to insist upon the permanent miracles. Busy editors cannot be expected to put on their posters Mr. Wilkinson Still Safe' or ' Mr. Jones, of Worthing, Not Dead Yet.' Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A concise history of the long struggle between two fundamentally opposing constitutional traditions, from one of the nation’s leading constitutional scholars—a manifesto for renewing our constitutional republic. The Constitution of the United States begins with the words: “We the People.” But from the earliest days of the American republic, there have been two competing notions of “the People,” which lead to two very different visions of the Constitution. Those who view “We the People” collectively think popular sovereignty resides in the people as a group, which leads them to favor a “democratic” constitution that allows the “will of the people” to be expressed by majority rule. In contrast, those who think popular sovereignty resides in the people as individuals contend that a “republican” constitution is needed to secure the pre-existing inalienable rights of “We the People,” each and every one, against abuses by the majority. In Our Republican Constitution, renowned legal scholar Randy E. Barnett tells the fascinating story of how this debate arose shortly after the Revolution, leading to the adoption of a new and innovative “republican” constitution; and how the struggle over slavery led to its completion by a newly formed Republican Party. Yet soon thereafter, progressive academics and activists urged the courts to remake our Republican Constitution into a democratic one by ignoring key passes of its text. Eventually, the courts complied. Drawing from his deep knowledge of constitutional law and history, as well as his experience litigating on behalf of medical marijuana and against Obamacare, Barnett explains why “We the People” would greatly benefit from the renewal of our Republican Constitution, and how this can be accomplished in the courts and the political arena.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many Americans today realize that their own government is steadily becoming the greatest danger and threat to their rights, liberties, and future prosperity. In their attempt to right the errant ways of American government, millions of Americans have looked to the Constitution for answers, and yet “what is Constitutional” continues to elude those that we the people elect to political office. In Recovering American Liberty, the authors note the importance of the Constitution, but present an argument that contemporary Americans have lost sight of the ethical principles that the Constitution was conceived and written in, and ratified only in the light of – those being the self-evident truth principles laid out in the Declaration of Independence. Recovering American Liberty explores the Declaration of Independence and each of those self-evident truths. The authors reason that without Americans first becoming a people who once again embrace these principles in the Declaration, then all their efforts to Make America Great Again, will be for not. For, it is only because Americans once honored these principles in their personal lives, that America as a nation, became Great in the first place.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Classic Books Library presents this brand new edition of “The Federalist Papers”, a collection of separate essays and articles compiled in 1788 by Alexander Hamilton. Following the United States Declaration of Independence in 1776, the governing doctrines and policies of the States lacked cohesion. “The Federalist”, as it was previously known, was constructed by American statesman Alexander Hamilton, and was intended to catalyse the ratification of the United States Constitution. Hamilton recruited fellow statesmen James Madison Jr., and John Jay to write papers for the compendium, and the three are known as some of the Founding Fathers of the United States. Alexander Hamilton (c. 1755–1804) was an American lawyer, journalist and highly influential government official. He also served as a Senior Officer in the Army between 1799-1800 and founded the Federalist Party, the system that governed the nation’s finances. His contributions to the Constitution and leadership made a significant and lasting impact on the early development of the nation of the United States.
