Book Synopsis Supernormal Stimuli: How Primal Urges Overran Their Evolutionary Purpose by : Deirdre Barrett
Download or read book Supernormal Stimuli: How Primal Urges Overran Their Evolutionary Purpose written by Deirdre Barrett and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2010-02-22 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Harvard psychologist explains how our once-helpful instincts get hijacked in our garish modern world. Our instincts—for food, sex, or territorial protection— evolved for life on the savannahs 10,000 years ago, not in today’s world of densely populated cities, technological innovations, and pollution. We now have access to a glut of larger-than-life objects, from candy to pornography to atomic weapons—that gratify these gut instincts with often-dangerous results. Animal biologists coined the term “supernormal stimuli” to describe imitations that appeal to primitive instincts and exert a stronger pull than real things, such as soccer balls that geese prefer over eggs. Evolutionary psychologist Deirdre Barrett applies this concept to the alarming disconnect between human instinct and our created environment, demonstrating how supernormal stimuli are a major cause of today’s most pressing problems, including obesity and war. However, Barrett does more than show how unfettered instincts fuel dangerous excesses. She also reminds us that by exercising self-control we can rein them in, potentially saving ourselves and civilization.

Book Synopsis Infinitely Full of Hope by : Tom Whyman
Download or read book Infinitely Full of Hope written by Tom Whyman and published by Watkins Media Limited. This book was released on 2021-04-13 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A philosophical memoir about becoming a father in an increasingly terrible world – can I hope the child growing in my partner's womb will have a good-enough life? For Kant, philosophy boiled down to three key questions: “What can I know?”, “What ought I do?”, and “What can I hope for?” In philosophy departments, that third question has largely been neglected at the expense of the first two – even though it is crucial for understanding why anyone might ask them in the first place. In Infinitely Full of Hope, as he prepares to become a father for the first time, the philosopher Tom Whyman attempts to answer Kant’s third question, trying to make sense of it in the context of a world that increasingly seems like it is on the verge of collapse. Part memoir, part theory, and part reflection on fatherhood, Infinitely Full of Hope asks how we can cling to hope in a world marked by crisis and disaster.

Book excerpt: He was even more breathtaking as a man than he had been as a silverback and she moaned softly at the sight of his chiseled body, dark tattoos encasing his broad, muscular shoulders and trailing down his hard chest. She leaned down and drew her tongue across his skin, licking away the rainwater and gathering the taste of him. Her teeth nipped at his chest and she felt his hands pulling at her shirt. They were on top of a tall platform in the middle of the outdoor enclosure, putting them on display to anyone who happened to walk by, but it was late and she knew the continuing rain would keep any of the other zoo staff away from the exhibit for the night. Even without that reassurance, though, Breelan knew she couldn't have resisted him. She needed him in a way she had never needed anyone.WARNING: This book is recommended for audiences 18+

Download or read book The Urge written by Andrea A. Allen and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-08-08 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My name is Brian Blackdeath. Of course it is not my real name. It's a self -imposed pseudonym. What grew inside of me as a child I simply refer to it as the Urge. What the Urge really is, a story unto its self, hard to explain in just a few words. Many things in life are hard to explain, with any intelligence, in just a few words. I go on walking expeditions, or 'interviews', looking for people. I help these people; I'm not your average serial killer that thinks it's okay to kill without purpose. I have a purpose. As a matter of fact, I do not kill, I lay them to rest. It is what they desire. It is what they would like me to do for them. Release them from mediocrity, the mundaneness of their life. I find people, through many different ways, in bars, on the street, restaurants, etc., anywhere there are people you are bound to find me. I already have many, many stories to tell of those that have already been laid to rest. Eyes open hands laid across the chest. I remember them well; I feel they are happier now. I've done nothing wrong, at least that's how I feel. But, I digress. What makes me kill is how I see killing. Killing isn't a God complex. No. It shouldn't be thought of as that. No one kills to make himself feel like the Almighty Creator. I don't kill for fun either. It's only exhilarating when you out smart someone that's trying to preserve themselves. It's hard to kill an innocent begging and pleading to be spared. Although, there is a superiority rush, which makes you kill them anyway. I kill because of the primal thing. It's not fear or survival. It's man's basic primal urge to kill. It's no different from seeing a good looking woman and wanting to fuck her. I lay them to rest to satisfy my primal urge. I know I could suppress it, if I wanted or needed to. Many of us suppress it every day. Sometimes people slip, the news calls it road rage. But, even then, people suppress it and go on with life. I like the feeling I get from a good kill. No different from the hunter when it captures its prey. Oh, the rush of smells and the jolt of adrenaline. Sometimes it makes you want to scream from sheer pleasure. But, it never fails, those feelings of humanity the somberness of guilt.
