Download or read book Handbook of Monetary Economics Vols 3A+3B Set written by Benjamin M. Friedman and published by Newnes. This book was released on 1990 with total page 1729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have monetary policies matured during the last decade? The recent downturn in economies worldwide have put monetary policies in a new spotlight. In addition to their investigations of new tools, models, and assumptions, they look carefully at recent evidence on subjects as varied as price-setting, inflation persistence, the private sector's formation of inflation expectations, and the monetary policy transmission mechanism. They also reexamine standard presumptions about the rationality of asset markets and other fundamentals. Stopping short of advocating conclusions about the ideal conduct of policy, the authors focus instead on analytical methods and the changing interactions among the ingredients and properties that inform monetary models. The influences between economic performance and monetary policy regimes can be both grand and muted, and this volume clarifies the present state of this continually evolving relationship. Presents extensive coverage of monetary policy theories with an eye toward questions raised by the recent financial crisis Explores the policies and practices used in formulating and transmitting monetary policies Questions fiscal-monetary connnections and encourages new thinking about the business cycle itself Observes changes in the formulation of monetary policies over the last 25 years

Book Synopsis The Euro, Inflation and Consumers' Perceptions by : Paolo Giovane
Download or read book The Euro, Inflation and Consumers' Perceptions written by Paolo Giovane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-04-16 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 1 January 2002, euro banknotes and coins were introduced in twelve EU Member States. Three more countries joined in the following years, and over 300 million people now use the euro in their daily transactions. The currency changeover was a technical success. From the very start, however, the vast majority of euro area citizens held the single currency responsible for a sharp rise in prices and a subsequent decline in their personal economic fortunes. This book puts forward convincing empirical evidence, primarily drawn from Italy’s experience, to establish whether the introduction of the euro has had a major impact on prices, and if not, why so many people believe it has. Its significance lies not only in the documentation of a historic event, but also and more importantly, in the lessons it provides, which concern the public’s understanding of inflation, the correct assessment of the effects of the single currency, and the need for appropriate measures when other countries adopt the euro.

Book Synopsis The Dynamics of the Price Structure and the Business Cycle by : Cristina Nardi Spiller

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By exploring the price dynamics and business cycle of the Italian economy with reference to the most important international events, this text sheds new light on the country's current situation. Using a long-term analytical framework underpinned by principal theoretical approaches, the analysis places particular emphasis on price dynamics. The text begins with the country's post-war difficulties and then covers the boom-and-bust period of the "Italian miracle", before moving onto the lasting inflationary process of the 70s and 80s, and finally the financial crisis of the 90s and the beginning of the new century. The book also investigates the positive and negative aspects of policy measures. An important implication of this approach is that it assesses the different evolutionary aspects of the Italian economic structure, which in turn gives way to an analysis of the dynamic behaviour of policy makers and social partners.

Book Synopsis Market Structure and Competition Policy by : George Norman
Download or read book Market Structure and Competition Policy written by George Norman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2000-11-30 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2000 text applies modern advances in game theory to the analysis of competition policy and develops some of the theoretical and policy concerns associated with the pioneering work of Louis Phlips. Containing contributions by leading scholars from Europe and North America, this book observes a common theme in the relationship between the regulatory regime and market structure. Since the inception of the new industrial organization, economists have developed a better understanding of how real-world markets operate. These results have particular relevance to the design and application of anti-trust policy. Analyses indicate that picking the most competitive framework in the short run may be detrimental to competition and welfare in the long run, concentrating the attention of policy makers on the impact on the long-run market structure. This book provides essential reading for graduate students of industrial and managerial economics as well as researchers and policy makers.

Book Synopsis International Technology Transfer by Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises by : Peter J. Buckley
Download or read book International Technology Transfer by Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises written by Peter J. Buckley and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-07-27 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is the culmination of a research effort which spanned all continents and involved a large number of research teams from both the industrialised and developing countries. The book addresses a number of key issues related to technology transfer by small and medium-sized enterprises most especially whether such companies are more effective transferors than larger transnational corporations. A key aspect of the research was the fact that firms in source and host countries were matched to assure a degree of consistency in the firm coverage and their responses.
Book Synopsis Corporate Indebtedness and Low Productivity Growth of Italian Firms by : Gareth Anderson
Download or read book Corporate Indebtedness and Low Productivity Growth of Italian Firms written by Gareth Anderson and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-02-23 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Productivity growth in Italy has been persistently anemic and has lagged that of the euro area over the period 1999-2015, while the indebtedness of its corporate sector has increased. Using the ORBIS firm-level database, this paper studies the long-term impact of persistent corporate-debt accumulation on the productivity growth of Italian firms and investigates whether total factor productivity growth varies with the level of corporate indebtedness. We employ a novel estimation technique proposed by Chudik, Mohaddes, Pesaran, and Raissi (2017) to account for dynamics, bi-directional feedback effects, cross-firm heterogeneity, and cross-sectional dependence arising from unobserved common factors (for example, oil price shocks, labor and product market frictions, and stance of global financial cycle). Filtering out the effects of unobserved common factors and controlling for firmspecific characteristics, we find significant negative effects of persistent corporate debt build-up on total factor productivity growth, and weak evidence of a threshold level of corporate debt, beyond which productivity growth drops off significantly. Our results have strong policy implications, for example the design of the tax system should discourage persistent corporate debt accumulation, and effective and timely frameworks to reduce corporate debt overhangs are essential.

Book Synopsis Multinationals and Europe 1992 (RLE International Business) by : Beat Burgenmeier
Download or read book Multinationals and Europe 1992 (RLE International Business) written by Beat Burgenmeier and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-25 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When it was originally published this book presented the first independent review of the critical role played by multinationals in Europe. Extending its focus beyond 1992, the book examines both the economic and business strategy frameworks the firms need to develop to maintain a competitive advantage. Using case-studies from specific industries, it looks not only at the activity of multinationals within the single market but explores the competitive strategies of non-European firms with special emphasis on Japanese companies which were poised to exploit 1992. The importance of interaction between multinationals and national government policies is also analysed taking into account the integration already achieved.
