Book Synopsis Old Cities, New Assets by : Eduardo Rojas
Download or read book Old Cities, New Assets written by Eduardo Rojas and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the short span of some 50 years, starting with the founding of Santo Domingo at the end of the 15th century, the Spanish and Portuguese conquistadors established most of the cities that today are the cornerstone of urban Latin America. The monuments, buildings and plazas that make up this vast heritage continue to define the region's cultural identity and constitute a valuable asset for socioeconomic development. This book explores ways to bring private investors, developers and urban residents into the preservation process, which is beyond the scope of government alone. It describes the different approaches being used to involve these various stakeholders, including successful if not coordinated interventions by public and private interests in Cartagena, Colombia ; operation of a mixed-capital corporation in Quito, Ecuador; and a government-promoted private investment program in Recife, Brazil. The experiences of these three historic Latin American cities provide significant clues about conditions that attract investment, and show why sustained private involvement is the key to furthering heritage preservation in the region. Book Synopsis The End of Tradition? by : Nezar Alsayyad
Download or read book The End of Tradition? written by Nezar Alsayyad and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-08-02 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rooted in real world observations, this book questions the concept of tradition - whether contemporary globalization will prove its demise or whether there is a process of simultaneous ending and renewing. In his introduction, Nezar Alsayyad discusses the meaning of the word 'tradition' and the current debates about the 'end of tradition'. Thereafter the book is divided into three parts. The three chapters in part I explore the inextricable link between 'tradition' and 'modern', revealing the geopolitical implications of this link. Part II looks at tradition as a process of invention and here the three chapters are all concerned with the making of landscapes and landscape myths, showing how the spectacle of history can be aestheticized and naturalized. Finally, Part III shows how traditionis a regime, programmed and policed and how it has been deployed, resisted, and reworked through hegemonic struggles that seek to create both built environments and citizen-subjects.
Book Synopsis Architectural Conservation in South Africa Since 1994 by : Albrecht Herholdt
Download or read book Architectural Conservation in South Africa Since 1994 written by Albrecht Herholdt and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 539 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book traces the development of theory and practice in the country since 1994. Dramatic changes in legislation followed and South Africa's isolation ended. This manifested in a far more sophisticated and inclusive conservation ethic, with many sites around South Africa bearing powerful demonstration of this journey. The work of 65 practices and 112 projects demonstrate the tremendous skills required by an architect dealing with conservation. Projects range from the restoration of the Castle in Cape Town, to contemporary infill buildings, heritage inventories and the modest conservation of houses at a Moravian Mission Station (with labour trained on site). South Africa offers possibly the most complicated postcolonial context one might imagine, more so than any even Australia or the United States." -- http://www.ecia.co.za/content/42
Book Synopsis Colonial Architecture and Urbanism in Africa by : Fassil Demissie
Download or read book Colonial Architecture and Urbanism in Africa written by Fassil Demissie and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-12-05 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colonial architecture and urbanism carved its way through space: ordering and classifying the built environment, while projecting the authority of European powers across Africa in the name of science and progress. The built urban fabric left by colonial powers attests to its lingering impacts in shaping the present and the future trajectory of postcolonial cities in Africa. Colonial Architecture and Urbanism explores the intersection between architecture and urbanism as discursive cultural projects in Africa. Like other colonial institutions such as the courts, police, prisons, and schools, that were crucial in establishing and maintaining political domination, colonial architecture and urbanism played s pivotal role in shaping the spatial and social structures of African cities during the 19th and 20th centuries. Indeed, it is the cultural destination of colonial architecture and urbanism and the connection between them and colonialism that the volume seeks to critically address. The contributions drawn from different interdisciplinary fields map the historical processes of colonial architecture and urbanism and bring into sharp focus the dynamic conditions in which colonial states, officials, architects, planners, medical doctors and missionaries mutually constructed a hierarchical and exclusionary built environment that served the wider colonial project in Africa.
