Book excerpt: Place this quilt upon your bed and in one month you shall be wed… Pregnant and alone, Maddy Potter knew marriage wasn't in her near future—certainly not to Pete Taggart. The rude, arrogant—and she'd admit, protectively sexy—rancher would never ask her! Just because the handsome widower rescued her from a blizzard and she'd slept under his heirloom quilt for two nights did not mean anything would happen between them. Surely the quilt's legend wasn't real…? Pete had reasons for maintaining his status as one of Sweetheart, Colorado's most eligible bachelors. But seeing Maddy blossom with pregnancy shook him to the soul. A woman shouldn't be alone at a time like that. And he didn't have to love her to give her his name…did he?

Book excerpt: Simon Freeman has just graduated from college and is driving across country in search of a lucrative sales job and the American Dream. Along the way, he is diverted off the path by a storm that leads him back to a small Midwestern town where he had spent the first ten years of his life. After reconnecting with his old friends, he quickly becomes accustomed to an all too familiar lifestyle. Not long after his arrival, a murder rocks the community, and Simon becomes convinced that he has been chosen to put an end to a curse and the cycle of tragedies that have plagued the town of Bethel for the past seventy-two years. With the help of a wily, old principal named Thelma Harold, he comes to believe that by renovating the local elementary school, he can influence a referendum vote that will restore the values and priorities of a corrupt, depraved community that has been overrun by a shrewd businessman named Jack Lawless and a small faction of wealthy landowners. During the renovation, however, Simon unwittingly enters into his own personal journey that takes him from salvation to sanctification. Along the way, a fledgling romance with a young teacher named Hope Wiseman forces Simon to confront the demons of his past and make a choice to either serve himself or Christ. In the end, Simon finds out that simply returning a building to its original condition has far greater societal implications to the eternal welfare for the cursed people of Bethel.

The book focuses on the seven dimensions of maternal prenatal emotional health: Acceptance of the pregnancy. Motivation and preparation for motherhood. Relationship with husband/partner. Relationship with her own mother. Preparation for labor. Sense of control in labor Self-Esteem and Well-Being in labor. Psychosocial Adaptation to Pregnancy is a significant addition to the psychosocial assessment literature, a needed resource for clinical and health psychologists, clinical social workers, marriage and family therapists, professional counselors, midwives, and obstetrical nurses. Book excerpt: Shocking revelations of a wife’s adultery explode in an incendiary nineteenth-century trial, exposing upper-crust New York society and its secrets. What could possibly go wrong in a wealthy matriarch’s country home when her dilettante son, his restless wife, and his widowed brother live there together? Strong Passions, rooted in the beguiling times of Edith Wharton’s “old New York,” recounts the true story of a tumultuous marriage. In 1862, Mary Strong stunned her husband, Peter, by confessing to a two-year affair with his brother. Peter sued Mary for divorce for adultery—the only grounds in New York—but not before she accused him of forcing her into an abortion and having his own affair with the abortionist. She then kidnapped their young daughter and disappeared. The divorce trial Strong v. Strong riveted the nation during the final throes and aftermath of the Civil War, offering a shocking glimpse into the private world of New York’s powerful and privileged elite. Barbara Weisberg presents the chaotic courtroom and panoply of witnesses—governess, housekeeper, private detective, sisters-in-law, and many others—who provided contradictory and often salacious testimony. She then asks us to be the jury, deciding each spouse’s guilt and the possibility of a just resolution. Social history at its most intimate, Strong Passions charts a trial’s twists and turns to portray a family and country in turmoil as they faced conflicts over women’s changing roles, male custody of children, and men’s power—financial and otherwise—over wives.

Book excerpt: William James Potter’s name is virtually unknown to contemporary Unitarian Universalists, even by many of those who consider themselves scholars of this liberal religious movement. Why forgotten? He was a founder and the mainstay of the Free Religious Association, an organization whose members radically transformed American Unitarianism and had a significant influence on American public life. He was the president of the Index Association and, later, editor of that influential journal of religious and social commentary. Few remember that association or the journal, still fewer, Potter. Coming of humble origins, shy and withdrawn by temperament, he did little to put himself forward. He preferred to let his organizational skills and his brilliant and powerful writings do his talking. In the New Bedford, of his thirty-two year ministry, he was a major public figure, universally respected for his integrity and his commitment to the community, especially to the disadvantaged. He initiated many major programs and organizations. But he shied away from assertive leadership, preferring to initiate and then move on. With his congregation he was awkward in personal relationships, avoided parish calling, and only agreed that he would be available when needed. Respected more than loved! His immortality is in his quiet, but progressive and profound influence.
