Book excerpt: This book traces the image of the pregnant male in Greek literature as it evolved over the course of the classical period. The image - as deployed in myth and in metaphor - originated as a representation of paternity and, by extension, 'authorship' of ideas, works of art, legislation, and the like. Only later, with its reception in philosophy in the early fourth century, did it also become a way to figure and negotiate the boundary between the sexes. The book considers a number of important moments in the evolution of the image: the masculinist embryological theory of Anaxagoras of Clazomenae and other fifth century pre-Socratics; literary representations of the birth of Dionysus; the origin and functions of pregnancy as a metaphor in tragedy, comedy and works of some Sophists; and finally the redeployment of some of these myths and metaphors in Aristophanes' Assemblywomen and in Plato's Symposium and Theaetetus.

Book excerpt: Let history drop behind as we explore the sacred confines of a temple city built by a race that was here long before us; before our species was even a glimmer in the cosmic eye, and whose work is still evident, usable, and heuristic. Dominated by a mountain, sculpted as a pregnant women, with a lion at her feet and a rearing serpent behind, the site is still alive with eddies of spiritual energy. Between the colossal lady and lion is a saddle in the mountain beautified by mazes of stone, sparkling sand terraces, and the gardens of windswept splendor with the rock everywhere seeming to be incised with aesthetic, undecipherable hieroglyphics. The site is beautiful, bolstering, and enlivened; geometrically tuned to the cosmos, whose forces it appropriates to utilize in various ways. Join in as we uncover a few of the marvels of an authentically magical place with a psychedelic consciousness adapted to tuning into the ancient mysteries; giving a new dynamism to the on-going story if a truly sacred mountain.

Book excerpt: "Pleasures of Sight: A Poem" by John Holland is an affirmative and contemplative work that likely celebrates the visual experience and the profound impact of aesthetics on human perception. Holland, known for his contributions to poetry in the early 19th century, likely employs eloquent language to convey the beauty and significance of sight. In this poem, readers can expect a vivid exploration of the various aspects of visual pleasure. Holland may delve into the wonders of nature, the enchantment of art, and the emotive power of the visual senses. The title suggests a focus on the delight that comes from observing and appreciating the world through the lens of sight. The poem likely weaves together rich imagery, descriptive language, and perhaps reflective moments, inviting readers to engage with the sensory experience of sight. It may also delve into philosophical reflections on the connection between perception, beauty, and the human spirit.
