Book Synopsis Early Precambrian Basic Magmatism by : R.P. Hall
Download or read book Early Precambrian Basic Magmatism written by R.P. Hall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic magmatic rocks make up approximately three-quarters of the crust ofthe present day Earth. Because we can observe and study the volcanic products of present day tectonic regimes comprehensively, we can shed light on ancient tectono-magmatic provinces, and thereby deduce the petrogenesis and evolution of the oldest basic rocks. This is the primary objective of this book. The book was conceived in order to provide a comprehensive review of the basic rocks produced during the first half of the Precambrian, i.e. the Archaean and early Proterozoic, to about 1.8 Ga years ago. Two major questions are addressed. First, what basic magmas were generated during the early Precambrian: were these magmas globally uniform, and to what extent were prevailing tectonic controls and compo sitions analogous to those of the present day? Clearly, this can be answered only by bringing together fundamental information about all relevant basic magmatic events. Second, is there any systematic temporal variation in the nature of basic suites, and what implications might such variations have on our interpretations of early Earth history? Are there important differences between early Archaean, late Archaean, Proterozoic and modern basic magmatic suites? The book uses two approaches to address these questions. Early chapters examine the fundamental characteristics of these basic rocks, whilst later chapters assess regional distribution and development by providing an overview of each major early Precambrian craton.

Book Synopsis Precambrian '95 by : Gary Philip Beakhouse
Download or read book Precambrian '95 written by Gary Philip Beakhouse and published by Natural Resources Canada. This book was released on 1995 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This document is a guide to a field trip to the Superior Province of northern Ontario, the world's largest Archean craton. The goal of the field trip is to provide the participant with a flavor of the characteristics of the diverse subprovinces and domains that comprise the belt structure of the central portion of the western Superior Province, with an emphasis on relationships relevant to the independent development of terranes and their subsequent assembly and stabilization in the context of a uniformitarian, accretionary tectonic model. The document begins with descriptions of subdivisions of the western Superior Province and then sets out daily routes and outcrops to be observed during the trip, with discussion of each outcrop and explanations of the local geology, tectonics, and geochronology.

Book Synopsis Large Igneous Provinces by : Richard E. Ernst
Download or read book Large Igneous Provinces written by Richard E. Ernst and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2021-02-09 with total page 532 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is Open Access. A digital copy can be downloaded for free from Wiley Online Library. Exploring the links between Large Igneous Provinces and dramatic environmental impact An emerging consensus suggests that Large Igneous Provinces (LIPs) and Silicic LIPs (SLIPs) are a significant driver of dramatic global environmental and biological changes, including mass extinctions. Environmental changes caused by LIPs and SLIPs include rapid global warming, global cooling ('Snowball Earth'), oceanic anoxia events, mercury poisoning, atmospheric and oceanic acidification, and sea level changes. Continued research to characterize the effects of these extremely large and typically short duration igneous events on atmospheric and oceanic chemistry through Earth history can provide lessons for understanding and mitigating modern climate change. Large Igneous Provinces: A Driver of Global Environmental and Biotic Changes describes the interactions between the effects of LIPs and other drivers of climatic change, the limits of the LIP effect, and the atmospheric and oceanic consequences of LIPs in significant environmental events. Volume highlights include: Temporal record of large igneous provinces (LIPs) Environmental impacts of LIP emplacement Precambrian, Proterozoic, and Phanerozoic case histories Links between geochemical proxies and the LIP record Alternative causes for environmental change Key parameters related to LIPs and SLIPs for use in environmental change modelling Role of LIPs in Permo-Triassic, Triassic-Jurassic, and other mass extinction events The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals.
