Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The perfect gift for seekers, the curious, and the spiritually hungry, The Little Book of Prayers now has a stunning new cover and a more prayer book–like format. Gathered from holy books and prayer books, from songs and spirituals, spoken traditions and poets, it is an unexpectedly approachable collection of common and uncommon prayers from around the world. The entries, one per page or spread, are chosen for their depth of feeling, beauty of expression, spiritual intensity, and sense of the universal. The book is organized into broad categories of praise, entreaty, contemplation, mourning, and grace; and two indexes—one by authorship, and the other by topic—make it immediately accessible. There are familiar prayers, like the Lord’s Prayer and 23rd Psalm, which, placed in new context, shine with a renewed beauty and wisdom. You’ll find prayers unfamiliar to many in the West, such as the “Opener” from the Koran or the four vows of the Boddhisattva, chanted every evening in Zen monasteries around the world. And the surprising—from the “Prayer of the Unknown Confederate Soldier” to the blues of Lightnin’ Hopkins to the poetry of Rumi. God help us to live slowly: To move simply: To look softly: To allow emptiness: To let the heart create for us. Amen. —Michael Leunig You, whose day it is, make it beautiful. Get out your rainbow colors, so it will be beautiful. —Nootka Song

Book excerpt: Renowned pastor and New York Times bestselling author of The Prodigal Prophet Timothy Keller explores the power of prayer. Christians are taught in their churches and schools that prayer is the most powerful way to experience God. But few receive instruction or guidance in how to make prayer genuinely meaningful. In Prayer, renowned pastor Timothy Keller delves into the many facets of this everyday act. With his trademark insights and energy, Keller offers biblical guidance as well as specific prayers for certain situations, such as dealing with grief, loss, love, and forgiveness. He discusses ways to make prayers more personal and powerful, and how to establish a practice of prayer that works for each reader. Dr. Keller’s previous books have sold more than one million copies. His Redeemer Presbyterian Church is not only a major presence in his home base of New York, it has also helped to launch more than two hundred fifty other churches in forty-eight cities around the world. His teachings have already helped millions, the majority of whom pray regularly. And with Prayer, he’ll show them how to find a deeper connection with God.
Download or read book The Prayers of David written by Goulder and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2004-10-27 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the second of his invigorating studies on the Psalms, Goulder builds a fascinating case for a Davidic connection in Psalms 51-72. Goulder argues that the Prayers were composed by one of David's priests, and stand in their historical order. Thus, Psalm 51, with which the sequence opens, is in Jewish tradition David's psalm of contrition for Uriah's murder, and 72 is the psalm for Solomon's coronation-the beginning and end of the 'Succession Narrative'. 'The whole is prefaced by a shrewd and highly entertaining account of Psalm scholarship and a discussion of the character of the "succession narrative," and rounded off by a note suggesting how the present structure of the Psalter developed.' Richard Coggins, Expository Times.

Download or read book Great Prayers of the Bible written by Ralph F. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eleven profound prayers teach you the essence of faith and petition. If you're like many believers, you long to pray better, to shake off your dullness of spirit and encounter God more intimately. You want to pray with the courage of Abraham, to beseech God with the courage Moses, but.... There are many examples in the Bible of men and women who prayed fervent, effective prayers that God answered. That's the question: What kinds of prayers does God answer? What kind of faith does God respond to? This book examines in considerable depth eleven amazing prayers. Some are short, others lengthy, but each has something important to teach us. You'll study key prayers of Jesus, Paul, Moses, Abraham, David, Hezekiah, Daniel, and Nehemiah. The aim of this study is to help you develop in prayer, increase your faith, and move you into a new plane of communication with your Father in heaven. However, this is not a course in learning to manipulate God to get your way. It is a study of who God is and how He responds to his children's petitions. Thus it will help you adopt His own heart as you petition your Father. As you model your prayers and your faith after the exemplars put before you in God's holy Word, you'll gradually learn to take your place as one of Jesus' disciples whose prayers move heaven and earth. The book contains 11 lessons that can be used for personal enrichment and by small groups and classes. Preachers and teachers will also find a lot of their word study research done for them, with a number of illustrations and insights for lessons and sermons.

Book Synopsis Life and Diary of David Brainerd by : David Brainerd
Download or read book Life and Diary of David Brainerd written by David Brainerd and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark biography concerns David Brainerd, one of the most successful missionaries to live in the colonial era of North America. Although he lived a short life, perishing at the age of twenty-nine, David Brainerd distinguished himself as a missionary of supreme talent and capacity. Working in the barely charted wildernesses of North America in the early 18th century, his missions aimed to convert the Native American population to the Christian creed. Many converted, partly as Brainerd was capable of preaching sermons in the open air across the untrammeled countryside. After his missions lasted a little over three years, David was already famous for his successes. Overcoming fears of the Native Americans, he established whole communities of converts, and received several offers of work in large, existing churches in the safer, colonial towns. In rejecting these, he expresses his desire to keep converting the multitude of heathens naive to the greatness of God. A sensitive soul, David Brainerd suffered from a form of intermittent but severe depression, which was compounded by his lack of company in the wilderness. At times he was malnourished, and his mental and physical condition would become so poor that he was immobile. Eventually illness forced him to give up his ministry; retiring home, he was informed by a doctor that he had tuberculosis, and died in pain only a few months later. Brainerd's brief life, beset with struggles, was considered inspirational by many Christians. This biography, by Jonathan Edwards, is adapted from the journal that Brainerd kept throughout his life.
