Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many college students do not know how to find the subject or verb of a sentence, much less how to use commas or semi-colons properly. Yet teachers need to spend their class time teaching the composition and thinking skills needed for college-level writing. The Practical Grammar Handbook for College Writers (formerly My Dog Bites the English Teacher) allows teachers to cover all the grammar students need for correct writing in as little as 10 minutes a week for college-level writing courses.Unlike other handbooks cluttered with rarely needed information, The Practical Grammar Handbook for College Writers focuses on the grammar students need to write clearly and correctly. Appropriate both for higher developmental and college-level writing classes, it provides a step-by-step curriculum that guides students to a thorough understanding in the structure of the English language. The Practical Grammar Handbook for College Writers can be used as a teaching textbook in developmental courses, and it is also very effective as a reference book for college-level courses because it explains concepts clearly so that students can read and understand the material on their own. The chapter on research skills presents the steps for writing a research paper in a clear, logical manner that begins with analyzing a complete research paper and then discussing the various tasks involved in creating that paper. It anticipates the issues and answers the questions that always come up for students — those writing their first research paper and those with more experience. The Practical Grammar Handbook for College Writers makes life much easier both for the students and the teacher. Students who have a natural ability for language will finally know WHY they put a comma in a sentence, and students who are more mathematically inclined will rejoice that at last grammar makes sense.

Book excerpt: This textbook provides a practical guide to grammar and style choices for college writers, giving students a basic vocabulary for thinking and talking about language use and enabling them to make purposeful choices in their writing. Each section includes a short overview of a grammatical topic accompanied by exercises for raising the students’ awareness of and skills in using specific grammatical structures. It focuses on the practical and rhetorical functions of grammatical structures as they are used in expository and analytic writing, rather than on de-contextualized grammatical rules. Students will develop a repertoire of grammatical choices and understand the strategic reasons for making these choices in their writing for various audiences. It particularly attends to the structures that present the most difficulty for college students from multilingual communities and communities where a non-standard dialect of English is used on a daily basis. This textbook can be used as a core textbook for grammar course as well as a supplementary text for composition courses. It is also suitable for courses tailored to multilingual, advanced non-native, or non-standard speakers of English.

Book excerpt: Across America, in thousands of classrooms, from elementary school to high school, the time-tested sentence-composing approach has given students tools to become better writers. Now the Killgallons present a much anticipated sentence-composing grammar worktext for college writing. GRAMMAR FOR COLLEGE WRITING: A Sentence-Composing Approach presents a new and easier way to understand grammar: NOUN GROUP: The Naming Tools VERB GROUP: The Narrating Tools ADJECTIVE GROUP: The Describing Tools ADVERB GROUP: The Explaining Tools Within each group, using model sentences by authors, students learn and practice words, phrases, and clauses that share the group's function. The Killgallons' accessible approach develops students' use of twenty-one grammatical tools to build sentences like those of recognizable authors. All tools are practiced through the Killgallons' signature methods: matching, unscrambling, combining, imitating, exchanging, expanding. Each tool is introduced with a clear definition and characteristics; practiced through six varied sentence-composing activities; then applied in an academic or creative composition that spotlights the tool. Students learn from model sentences chosen for two reasons: their grammatical structure (the sentence in the story) and their interesting content (the story in the sentence). GRAMMAR FOR COLLEGE WRITING gives students the chance to absorb and replicate the grammatical tools used by John Steinbeck, J. K. Rowling, Ernest Hemingway, Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, Truman Capote, Stephen King, and hundreds more. This worktext works beyond preparing first-year college students for college writing. It is well suited for many contexts: Before College- Students in honors or AP classes Students in grammar or creative writing electives. During College- Students in required first-year writing courses, or electives in grammar, rhetoric, style, linguistics, literary language, or creative writing Prospective English teachers in methods, grammar, or linguistics courses. After College- Teachers participating in curriculum or in-service workshops Teachers wanting a self-study approach to learning grammar to improve their own or their students' writing. An online instructor's manual includes background information, advice, tips, resources, and the original professional sentences used for activities. GRAMMAR FOR COLLEGE WRITING: A Sentence-Composing Approach is the most comprehensive worktext yet from the originators of that approach: the Killgallons. Guide your students toward mastery of the "grammar of the greats" by inviting hundreds of great authors to serve as their mentors-and the Killgallons as their guides. Book excerpt: Through the Mist and toward the Light: Grammar for the First Year College Writer offers a new approach to grammatical concepts to encourage and improve the grammar proficiency and writing skills for beginning writers. Far from a traditional handbook, the text presents innovative, engaging, practical, and accessible approaches to grammar that is often found difficult to first year college students. Section 1 of the text builds on the premise that good sentence structure is based on a student's ability to identify how each word in a sentence is being used. To that end, the section offers an in-depth look at the parts of speech and the many rules surrounding their correct usage. Section 2 fosters writing proficiency through an analysis of the most often misused punctuation symbols in the writing of first year students, offering detailed exercises to promote correct usage. Section 3 walks students through the common inhibitors to sound sentence structure and rhythm, and focuses on concepts often found challenging for multilingual student writers. The final section helps students transition to the next level of writing proficiency by introducing them to the intricacies of structural and transformational diagramming to engage their own sentence structure, build on what they have learned, and continue to develop their mastery of grammar. Through the Mist and toward the Light is an ideal and practical resource for foundational courses in writing and composition. The text can also be used to support freshmen orientation or student success courses or programs. Dr. Gary Montaño is a professor of English at Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, Texas.

This book was released on 2016-08-13 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Practical Grammar and Composition By Thomas Wood This book was begun as a result of the author's experience in teaching some classes in English in the night preparatory department of the Carnegie Technical Schools of Pittsburg. The pupils in those classes were all adults, and needed only such a course as would enable them to express themselves in clear and correct English. English Grammar, with them, was not to be preliminary to the grammar of another language, and composition was not to be studied beyond the everyday needs of the practical man. Great difficulty was experienced because of inability to secure a text that was suited to the needs of the class. A book was needed that would be simple, direct and dignified; that would cover grammar, and the essential principles of sentence structure, choice of words, and general composition; that would deal particularly with the sources of frequent error, and would omit the non-essential points; and, finally that would contain an abundance of exercises and practical work. It is with these ends in view that this book has been prepared. The parts devoted to grammar have followed a plan varying widely from that of most grammars, and an effort has been made to secure a more sensible and effective treatment. The parts devoted to composition contain brief expositions of only the essential principles of ordinary composition. Especial stress has been laid upon letter-writing, since this is believed to be one of the most practical fields for actual composition work. Because such a style seemed best suited to the general scheme and purpose of the book, the method of treatment has at times been intentionally rather formal.
