Book excerpt: Numbering a grand total of 251, the '9F' 2-10-0s represented one of the final developments of the main line steam locomotive in Britain and also the single most numerous of the BR standard classes. Designed under the auspices of Riddles at Crewe and built at Swindon, the first of the class was to emerge in 1954. However, by the date that the first of the locomotives was entering service, the death knell was already being sounded for main line steam operation in Great Britain. In 1955, the Modernisation Plan, with its emphasis upon diesel and electric traction, was to result in the decision to phase steam out and, whilst the class continued to be built until late 1960 (when Evening Star became the last main line steam locomotive constructed for BR), many of the type only had a woefully short operational life, many being withdrawn with less than 10 years of service.Although perceived primarily as a heavy freight locomotive- and duties such as the heavy iron between Tyne Dock and Consett became one of the trademarks- the locomotives also performed successfully on more glamorous passenger turns, with enthusiasts having many fond memories of the class's operation over the Somerset & Dorset line during the early 1950s. In his latest contribution to the hugely successful 'Power of' series, noted railway photographer and author Gavin Morrison turns his attention to this important, but often overlooked class. Drawing upon some 250 mono illustrations from his own collection and from those of other noted railways photographers, he records the development and operational history of the class from their origins in the early 1950s through to their final withdrawal from mainline service in the late 1960s and preservation.

Download or read book The Great Western Eight Coupled Heavy Freight Locomotives written by David Maidment and published by Pen and Sword. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Great Western Eight-Coupled Heavy Freight Locomotives' is the first of a series of 'Locomotive Profiles' to be published by Pen & Sword. It will describe the conception, design, building and operation of the fleet of powerful locomotives built in the first half of the twentieth century to meet the demands of the growing South Wales coal and steel industries and the West Midlands area served by the Great Western Railway. Whilst concentrating mainly on the standard designs of the great locomotive engineer, George Jackson Churchward, the 28XX and 47XX 2-8-0 locomotives, it will also cover the 2-8-0 and 2-8-2 tank engines designed for the South Wales Valleys mining areas and coal exports through Newport, Cardiff, Barry and Swansea Docks, and other 2-8-0 locomotives acquired by the Great Western to cope with the increased industrial needs during both world wars - the RODs, Swindon built 8Fs, WDs and American S160s. It will also cover the earliest designs of the Barry and Port Talbot Railways intended to cope with the valley coal traffic. The book will be copiously illustrated with 150 black and white and 50 coloured photographs and is a comprehensive record of some outstanding freight locomotives, many of the oldest engines still operating to the end of steam on British Railways in the mid 1960s, sixty years after they were designed."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating tale of a young school boy's exploits in his quest to spot every steam locomotive in the UK during the 1950s & 1960s, until steam finished on British Railways on 4th August 1968. at the time I lived in North Hertfordshire, so my trainspotting days began mainly at Hitchin on the ECML. I later moved to Guildford and carried on from there. I was fortunate in that I recorded virtually all my activities and furthermore have retained those records to this day. In those days before computers and mobile phones Trainspotting was one of the most popular hobbies in the country. My travels covered virtually the whole of the UK over a 10 year period. During that time along with my friends we had lots of interesting and sometimes amusing incidents; such as the Castleford 'Snow' occurrence; contretemps with a herd of Bullocks; run-ins with the law and shed foremen; sleeping rough on many occasions; a scary walk over Crumlin viaduct; our coach catching fire on the M1; plus many more. we visited locomotive sheds over 600 times during which I recorded in excess of 21,000 engines! We travelled by any means available; coach; bus; mini-bus; bicycle; car; motorbike; train; ferry; and a lot of hitchhiking! The latter including one such ride on a 9F which took me right into the shed I was about to bunk! We would take every opportunity to be by our beloved steam engines, daily on the way to & from school, then again in the evenings and every 2-3 weeks off an a tour somewhere in the UK some of these lasted 4 -5 days, often with rather dubious overnight accommodation! these tours were to all parts of the UK, from South Wales to Aberdeen, the Northwest, Northeast, Midlands, North Wales, south to Brighton, Southampton, Isle of Wight, West country and dozens of other locations The book has full colour card covers, is A4 portrait style of 185 pages and over 100 B & W photos. At the end of the text are two appendices, the first lists every shed visited and the relevant dates, the second lists in chronological order every locomotive seen, its shed and date. Barrie

Book excerpt: Addresses concerns about the contribution of federal programs and policies to "urban sprawl" (US) while recognizing that land-use planning has traditionally been a function of state and local governments. It (1) reviews research on the origins and implications of "US", (2) describes the evidence that exists on the influence of current federal programs and policies on "US", and (3) identifies regulatory review and coordination mechanisms evaluating and mitigating the effects of federal actions on "US." It is based on a review of research and discussions with experts in the public, private, and educational communities on growth-related issues.
Book Synopsis Multi-Gigahertz Nyquist Analog-to-Digital Converters by : Athanasios T. Ramkaj
Download or read book Multi-Gigahertz Nyquist Analog-to-Digital Converters written by Athanasios T. Ramkaj and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book proposes innovative circuit, architecture, and system solutions in deep-scaled CMOS and FinFET technologies, which address the challenges in maximizing the accuracy*speed/power of multi-GHz sample rate and bandwidth Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADC)s. A new holistic approach is introduced that first identifies the major error sources of a converter’ building blocks, and quantitatively analyzes their impact on the overall performance, establishing the fundamental circuit-imposed accuracy – speed – power limits. The analysis extends to the architecture level, by introducing a mathematical framework to estimate and compare the accuracy – speed – power limits of several ADC architectures and variants. To gain system-level insight, time-interleaving is covered in detail, and a framework is also introduced to compare key metrics of interleaver architectures quantitatively. The impact of technology is also considered by adding process effects from several deep-scaled CMOS technologies. The validity of the introduced analytical approach and the feasibility of the proposed concepts are demonstrated by four silicon prototype Integrated Circuits (IC)s, realized in ultra-deep-scaled CMOS and FinFET technologies. Introduces a new, holistic approach for the analysis and design of high-performance ADCs in deep-scaled CMOS technologies, from theoretical concepts to silicon bring-up and verification; Describes novel methods and techniques to push the accuracy – speed – power boundaries of multi-GHz ADCs, analyzing core and peripheral circuits’ trade-offs across the entire ADC chain; Supports the introduced analysis and design concepts by four state-of-the-art silicon prototype ICs, implemented in 28nm bulk CMOS and 16nm FinFET technologies; Provides a useful reference and a valuable tool for beginners as well as experienced ADC design engineers.

Book excerpt: To assist in the development of infrastructure in the nation's rural areas, the Rural Utilities Service in the Dept. of Agriculture made or guaranteed about $10.4 billion in loans during fiscal years 1992 through 1996. This report examines the (1) financial condition of the electricity, telecommunications, and water and waste disposal load portfolios, and (2) financial characteristics of borrowers having electricity and telecommunications loans. The financial characteristics of borrowers with water and waste disposal loans were not examined because most are public entities rather than private firms. Charts and tables.
