Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 110: April-May-June 1946 Commercial hatchery operations through early may 1946 were about 3 percent below'the corresponding period of 1945° Hatchings for flock replace monts were about equal to 1945, but substantial reductions occurred in outp of baby chicks for commercial broiler production. Chicks and young chickens on farms may 1 totaled 459 million, about the same as May 1, 1945. However a much smaller hatch is expected during June and July than in the same month of 1945 so that the total number of chickens raised in 1946 probably will be 5 to 10 percent below 1945. On the basis of past relationships, this would result in a moderate decrease in the number of hens and pullets on farms January 1, 1947 compared with January 1, 1946. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 190: July 1957 Broiler prices since mid-june have been the highest of the year to dat despite a slaughter of broilers which is running above a year earlier and abo the level of 2 to 3 months ago. Seasonally-strong consumer demand is sustain ing prices. In mid-june, the average price to farmers was cents per pound compared with cents a year earlier. Recent reports indicate place ments are continuing above a year earlier, and since demand will be weakening seasonally by the time these broilers are marketed, some decline in prices from present levels is likely in the fall. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 128: June-July 1948 The number of layers on farms at the beginning of 1948 was 1 percent less than at the beginning of 1947. During the first half of this year the rate of culling was somewhat greater than a year earlier because of less favorable relationships between feed prices and egg prices. By June, the number of layers on farms was 4 percent less than in June 1947. The rate of production per bird during the first half of 1948, however, was at a record level. Total egg production during the first 6 months of 1948 was smaller than a year earlier by only 2 percent. Egg production will decrease. Seasonally through November. Output during the second half of the year will continue below 1947; however, it will be augmented'by the somewhat large r storage holdings of shell eggs which were accumulated during the second quarter of 1948. On July 1, the holdings of shell eggs in the United States totaled million cases compared with million cases on July 1, 1947. Consequently, supplies of eggs for consumption during the remainder of 1948 will be nearly as great as a year earlier.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poultry and Egg Situation, Vol. 145: July 21, 1950 The Korean outbreak has not yet created any new requirements for eggs and poultry. Even if military demands increase, they can be partly met from existing stocks, and through the partly-offsetting reduction in civilian demand that follows from the transfer of individuals from the civilian to the military ranks. Department of Agriculture purchases of dried egg so far this year exceed the largest annual military purchases of dried egg during world mar.ii, and in the first 3 weeks of July the Department of Agriculture bought Csutjoot to certain conditions) 5 million pounds'of turkey for price support. Of course, civilian demand for eggs or poultry may increase on account of new shifts in either the price or per capita supply of meat. If such shifts develop, they are likely to affect poultry meat prices more than egg prices, not only because poultry meats compete more directly with red meats than do eggs, but also because it is easier and more practical f'or commercial ard institutional users to store poultry meats against anticipated needs.
