Book excerpt: In July 1881, bill-posting became legal in Paris. The result was an explosion of creativity over three glorious decades recognised as the golden age of poster advertising, stirring together elements of new printing technology, William Morrisâ?? attempts to reconcile medieval artistry with modern industry, the influence of newly-open Japan on European engraving and aesthetics, and the talents of artists as diverse as Jules Cheret, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Alphonse Mucha and Aubrey Beardsley. The Art Nouveau Poster is the most comprehensive survey to date of this vivid and much loved subject, featuring over 400 illustrations from all of the major European centres, Britain and the United States, with an informative and accessible text. A final chapter looks at the revival of interest in the 1960s following major retrospective exhibitions of Alphonse Mucha and Aubrey Beardsley, and features work from the psychedelic era.

Book excerpt: The Poster: Art, Advertising, Design, and Collecting, 1860sÐ1900s is a cultural history that situates the poster at the crossroads of art, design, advertising, and collecting. Though international in scope, the book focuses especially on France and England. Ruth E. Iskin argues that the avant-garde poster and the original art print played an important role in the development of a modernist language of art in the 1890s, as well as in the adaptation of art to an era of mass media. She moreover contends that this new form of visual communication fundamentally redefined relations between word and image: poster designers embedded words within the graphic, rather than using images to illustrate a text. Posters had to function as effective advertising in the hectic environment of the urban street. Even though initially commissioned as advertisements, they were soon coveted by collectors. Iskin introduces readers to the late nineteenth-century ÒiconophileÓÑa new type of collector/curator/archivist who discovered in poster collecting an ephemeral archaeology of modernity. Bridging the separation between the fields of art, design, advertising, and collecting, IskinÕs insightful study proposes that the poster played a constitutive role in the modern culture of spectacle. This stunningly illustrated book will appeal to art historians and students of visual culture, as well as social and cultural history, media, design, and advertising.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This catalog accompanies an exhibition on medical quackery, tracing its prevalence from the itinerant seller of nostrums four centuries ago to unsolicited spam on the Internet today. Prints by William Hogarth, Honore Daumier and others highlight the theatrics of the quack at work; posters by Jules Cheret, Maxfield Parrish and their contemporaries illustrate the remarkable artistry with which proprietary medicines were once advertised; and works by H.G. Wells, Weir Mitchell and other writers offer a delightful look at the elaborate language once used to promote the quack's wares." "The quack doctor's lavish pronouncements and excessive postures were matched only by similarly exalted promises of therapeutic cure. Quacks dressed elaborately, inflated their credentials, and embraced a particularly extravagant vocabulary to market their panaceas, at times claiming their pills and salves would cure all disease. Some wryly observed that the quacks' nomadic nature was necessary to enable them to avoid the inevitable reprisals of dissatisfied customers. They were later succeeded by the makers of proprietary medicines, many of whom adopted quackery's promotional methods while, at the same time, introducing new ones of their own. These vendors advertised widely (often with celebrity testimonials), publishing broadsides, posters, pamphlets and manifestoes to further amplify the popular reach of their product claims. Until the mid-nineteenth century, both physicians and quacks relied upon certain standard agents - including opium, quinine and antimony (which worked) and a great many others (which did not)."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From its 19th-century beginnings to sophisticated modern developments, the poster has not only been a powerful communications tool but has also reflected and shaped society. This fascinating account of the evolution of the poster reproduces 250 of the best examples of poster art from around the world. The book is divided into three sections, which look at the poster as a political statement, as a tool of advertising and consumerism, and as a work of art in its own right. Also discussed are graphic vocabulary, design, methods of production, and usage. Among the works featured are the fin-de-siecle masterpieces of Toulouse-Lautrec and Mucha; psychedelic posters of the 1960s; propaganda posters from the United States, Russia, Germany, Eastern Europe, and China; and iconic commercial posters for Levis, Haagen-Dazs, Wonderbra, and many others. Capturing the essence of their time, these posters speak out again in this colorful collection.

Book excerpt: This richly illustrated volume explores diverse aspects of life in nineteenth-century Paris, from the dim alleys of 'Old Paris' to the grand boulevards of the Second Empire. Paris earned the enduring nickname 'la ville lumiere' during the second half of the nineteenth century, when gas lamps gradually began to light up the city's dark medieval streets. Authors, composers, and especially visual artists thrived in this dazzling milieu. Approximately one hundred prints, drawings, photographs, and paintings offer an unforgettable tour of the cultural capital of the nineteenth century - the city in which Impressionism was born. Readers are transported to Paris via views of the city, from panoramas to picturesque details, by Pierre Bonnard, Charles Marville, Jean-Francois Raffaelli, and Edouard Vuillard. Works by Honore Daumier and Edouard Manet convey key historical events and underscore the newfound power of the press. Prints and drawings by Mary Cassatt, Paul Gauguin, and Camille Pissarro provide an expanded view of the Impressionist movement beyond the medium of painting, while Edgar Degas, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, and James Tissot contribute colourful images of the theatre, the circus, and other forms of popular entertainment. The book concludes with a selection of vibrant turn-of-the-century posters by Jules Cheret, Alphonse Mucha, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, and many more.
