Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Position and Course of the South IF history teaches any one lesson more emphatically than another, it is, that political institutions are never destroyed by in uences foreign to themselves. Wherever, therefore in the history of government, there have been two contending classes, the success of the one has been achieved by the inconsistency of the other. The reformation was begun by a Catholic Priest. The fepdal system was destroyed by absolute monarchs. The revolution of 1688 was the work of the Whig aristoc racy, as was the reform bill of a later period - and the French revolution, so often misquoted, was the joint labour of infidel Priests and democrat nobles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Old South Historical Work IN connection with each of the lectures in the Old South summer course, a historical tract or leaflet is prepared for circulation among the young people. These Old South Leaflets are usually reprints - a dozen or twenty pages in extent of important original documents, often not in easy reach of the ordinary student, related-more or less directly to the special subject of the lec ture for the week. The leaflets are given to all those attending the lectures as they enter the Meeting House, and at the end of the course those who have carefully preserved their leaflets can have them neatly bound for a few cents, giving them a useful little manual upon the gen eral subject of the course. A good idea of the nature of the leaflets may be gathered from the following list of the subjects of those for the present year. The reader is asked to compare the list with that of the corresponding lectures, given above. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literature of the South To give an introduction to the study of Literature as it has developed in the South leading to the fur ther study of the works of southern authors, is the purpose of this book. Literature and history go hand in hand, for, when all is said, the literature of a people is the expression of their life. T o understand Literature, then, we must understand its source. I have endeavored to indicate the characteristic of the succeeding periods of literary development, and to trace the influence of historical events upon the life and consequent expression of the people of the South. It has, of course, been impossible to discuss all southern writers. Only the more representative are treated with any fulness, and many names have been necessarily omitted. Thus, also, the lists given of writers and their works are representative and not exhaustive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: The highly acclaimed novelist and biographer Albert Murray tells his classic memoir of growing up in Alabama during the 1920s and 1930s in South to a Very Old Place. Intermingling remembrances of youth with engaging conversation, African-American folklore, and astute cultural criticism, it is at once an intimate personal journey and an incisive social history, informed by "the poet's language, the novelist's sensibility, the essayist's clarity, the jazzman's imagination, the gospel singer's depth of feeling" (The New Yorker). "His perceptions are firmly based in the blues idiom, and it is black music no less than literary criticism and historical analysis that gives his work its authenticity, its emotional vigor and its tenacious hold on the intellect...[It] destroys some fashionable socio-political interpretations of growing up black."--Toni Morrison, The New York Times Book Review

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Culturgeschichtliche Novellen It is as in some sort an introduction to such a study of German as I have endeavoured to indicate, so far as this is possible under the limitations of a commentary on a given text, that the present volume has been prepared. The notes are numerous and copious, but I trust they will commend themselves as not of the kind that paralyse the student's own mental activity by superseding the necessity for it; but rather as stimulating it by presenting suitable material in a workable form, and furnishing guidance in such a way as to lead to future independence. The material has of course been supplied in the first place by the text itself. This has been to a small extent supplemented, but chiefly elucidated and illustrated, by matter drawn from sources many of them inaccessible to the English reader. A not inconsiderable element may lay some claim to origi nality, and perhaps this will be the most valuable part of the book to the real student, because treating from the objective standpoint of the foreigner, specially of the Englishman, matters of idiomatic difficulty upon which only scattered hints are to be found in sources English or German. I may refer particularly to the notes on the particles, on the exact force, as felt in the original, of words like erst, z'ibrzlgms, vol lends, &c., and of certain familiar but peculiar modes of con ception and expression which are too completely ingrained in the consciousness of a native for him easily to make them the objects of analysis or of explanation to others. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Literature of the South It is to be hoped that the following studies will emphasize this close contact of letters with the life of the South. The aim has been throughout, however, to escape the' stigma of sectionalism. The South, per se, retains its individuality - but its significance, as part of the nation, should have a wider under standing. For it will be found that the South has contributed to American literature, both by example and by accomplishment; that it has been original, even though much of its writing is imitative. The literature of the South is the literature of a people, and those people - after an evolution from the aristo crat to the democrat, taken in a wider sense - are themselves Americans as well as Southerners. The bibliographies contained in the Appendix will bespeak my indebtedness to the many sources of an historical and social nature. It is a pleasure here to express my deep appreciation of the unfailing courtesy given to me by the authorities of Columbia University Library, who have placed at my disposal every facility; in especial, I would thank Mr. Frederic W. Erb, whose personal interest and watchfulness have done much to enrich my bibliographies. To the St. Agnes Branch of the New York Public Library I also wish to extend my grateful acknowledgment. Every teacher of history from Maine to California now knows, we think, of the Old South Lea ets. They are sold at a price just covering the cost, five cents a copy, or four dollars for a hundred copies, the aim being to bring them within easy reach of everybody, especially of schools and of those wishing to circulate them in connection with lectures.
