Book Synopsis The Extraordinary Adirondack Journey of Clarence Petty by : Christopher Angus
Download or read book The Extraordinary Adirondack Journey of Clarence Petty written by Christopher Angus and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2015-02-25 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author and naturalist Christopher Angus profiles for the first time the adventurous life of Clarence Petty, one of the great pioneer conservationists of the Adirondack Mountain region of New York State. Raised in the heart of the Adirondack wilderness between Tupper and Saranac Lakes, Petty overcame his humble beginnings and pursued a variety of careers as wilderness guide, forester, Civilian Conservation Corps camp director, World War II pilot, district ranger, and aerial forest-fire fighter—ultimately leaving his indelible mark as a lifelong advocate for the protection of the wilderness. The story of Petty's life reads like a Horatio Alger novel. His father moved to the mountains in the 1880s to work as a guide. His mother was a cook for one of the popular sportsmen's hotels in the area. Young Clarence and his brothers enjoyed the kind of childhood freedom and independence that today's youngsters can only dream about. Their father's sense of self-reliance and their mother's drive to educate her sons led all three to attend college. Clarence followed a path of service to the American landscape. His influence on state policy regarding the Adirondack Park and especially its millions of acres of wilderness has been profound. His life story provides a window into the politics of conservation in the Adirondack region from the early days of the twentieth century to the present.
Book Synopsis The New Deal's Forest Army by : Benjamin F. Alexander
Download or read book The New Deal's Forest Army written by Benjamin F. Alexander and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the Civilian Conservation Corps constructed, rejuvenated, and protected American forests and parks at the height of the Great Depression. Propelled by the unprecedented poverty of the Great Depression, President Franklin D. Roosevelt established an array of massive public works programs designed to provide direct relief to America’s poor and unemployed. The New Deal’s most tangible legacy may be the Civilian Conservation Corps’s network of parks, national forests, scenic roadways, and picnic shelters that still mark the country’s landscape. CCC enrollees, most of them unmarried young men, lived in camps run by the Army and worked hard for wages (most of which they had to send home to their families) to preserve America’s natural treasures. In The New Deal’s Forest Army, Benjamin F. Alexander chronicles how the corps came about, the process applicants went through to get in, and what jobs they actually did. He also explains how the camps and the work sites were run, how enrollees spent their leisure time, and how World War II brought the CCC to its end. Connecting the story of the CCC with the Roosevelt administration’s larger initiatives, Alexander describes how FDR’s policies constituted a mixed blessing for African Americans who, even while singled out for harsh treatment, benefited enough from the New Deal to become an increasingly strong part of the electorate behind the Democratic Party. The CCC was the only large-scale employment program whose existence FDR foreshadowed in speeches during the 1932 campaign—and the dearest to his heart throughout the decade that it lasted. Alexander reveals how the work itself left a lasting imprint on the country’s terrain as the enrollees planted trees, fought forest fires, landscaped public parks, restored historic battlegrounds, and constructed dams and terraces to prevent floods. A uniquely detailed exploration of life in the CCC, The New Deal’s Forest Army compellingly demonstrates how one New Deal program changed America and gave birth to both contemporary forestry and the modern environmental movement.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Letchworth State Park, located in the Genesee Valley of western New York State, is renowned for its natural beauty, scenic roads, trails, and recreational facilities. Created from the private estate of William Pryor Letchworth in 1907, the park quickly grew in size and popularity. A series of ambitious expansion and development plans were under way when the Great Depression struck, threatening the park's future. That future was restored when President Roosevelt's Civilian Conservation Corps brought hundreds of young men to the four CCC camps established in the park. From 1933 to 1941, they worked on cabins, roads, and other projects, while strengthening their bodies, minds, and futures. Their legacy is still enjoyed by thousands of park visitors today. The Civilian Conservation Corps in Letchworth State Park explores the stories of these camps, as well as the CCC "boys" and their legacy, through vintage photographs, camp and area newspapers, official reports, and the memories of CCC veterans.
Book Synopsis Perspectives on the Adirondacks by : Barbara McMartin
Download or read book Perspectives on the Adirondacks written by Barbara McMartin and published by Syracuse University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-04 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barbara McMartin narrates the history of Adirondack environmental policy in depth, beginning with the 1970 formation of the Adirondack Park Agency, set up to regulate private development and to oversee the planning of public terrain. Although hailed as the most innovative land-use legislation of its time, it ignited a wildfire of controversy, creating a landscape of conflict. Park residents protested. Government stood firm. Over the decades, disparate groups have sought to shape an effective program to protect Adirondack wildland but cannot seem to work together. This is the first comprehensive account of that ongoing drama: a stirring story of the environmental movement, public action, and government failure and success.

Book Synopsis The Civilian Conservation Corps by : Peggy Sanders
Download or read book The Civilian Conservation Corps written by Peggy Sanders and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2004 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Civilian Conservation Corps was established on March 31, 1933 by President Franklin Roosevelt as part of his efforts to pull the country out of the Great Depression. The program lasted until July 2 1942, successfully creating work for a half-million unemployed young men across the nation. They were housed, fed, clothed, and taught trade skills while working in forests, parks, and range lands. Paid one dollar a day, each man was required to send home $25 a month; the program provided work for young men as well as support to thousands of families. South Dakota was home to more than 50 camps over the nine-year time span with projects in areas ranging from constructing bridges and buildings in state parks, thinning trees in national forests to mining rock, crushing it into gravel, and graveling roads. Although this volume is set in South Dakota, the photos are representative of camps and men from all over the nation who served in the CCCs.

Book Synopsis Lake Pleasant and Speculator in the Adirondacks by : Anne A. Weaver
Download or read book Lake Pleasant and Speculator in the Adirondacks written by Anne A. Weaver and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2010 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The numerous lakes and the forests of the southern Adirondacks provided an abundance of game, fish, and lumber for early settlers in the 1800s. Sportsmen from the city first came to Lake Pleasant and Speculator for invigorating camping trips and eventually brought the whole family to enjoy the wilderness. Two- and three-story hotels were built to accommodate the vacationing families. Individual cottages and rustic camps were built around Lake Pleasant, Sacandaga Lake, and Echo Lake, followed by children's and church camps and state campgrounds, which swelled the seasonal population. Boxing and winter sports helped to make Speculator and Lake Pleasant a tourist haven.
