Book excerpt: The impact of structural adjustment programs on the poor in developing countries has received a great deal of attention in recent years. This paper provides a general overview of the issues involved and then analyzes the impact of structural adjustment on the poor in Cote d'Ivoire. Several conclusions can be drawn from the Ivorian case. Many of the poor may be little affected by structural adjustment policies because most of them are subsistence farmers in rural areas. Consequently, the cost of safeguarding the poor during adjustment may not be very high. In practice, however, it may be very difficult to identify the poor and to implement the needed interventions. Household survey data can be extremely useful in assessing the effects of structural adjustment on the poor and designing appropriate policies on their behalf.

Book Synopsis The Alleviation of Poverty Under Structural Adjustment by : Lionel Demery
Download or read book The Alleviation of Poverty Under Structural Adjustment written by Lionel Demery and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 1987-01-01 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study has identified a number of examples in which concerns about the alleviation of poverty have been given some practical expression in adjustment programs. Because most of these examples are of very recent origin, it is difficult to assess how effective they have been in helping the poor. First, one striking feature of the illustrations compiled is that they are invariably orderly or planned structural adjustment programs that have often been implemented with Bank assistance (Bolivia, Cote d'Ivoire, The Gambia, Indonesia, Jamaica, and Thailand). Second, income distributions will inevitably change during adjustment. These changes are the principal incentives for resource reallocation, and without them the objectives of adjustment will not be realized. Third, the study highlights the advantages of interventions that increase the primary income claims of the poor. Finally, adjustment can act as a catalyst for policymakers to examine carefully the costs and benefits of their programs for the poor.

Download or read book Poor Economics written by Abhijit V. Banerjee and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2012-03-27 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The winners of the Nobel Prize in Economics upend the most common assumptions about how economics works in this gripping and disruptive portrait of how poor people actually live. Why do the poor borrow to save? Why do they miss out on free life-saving immunizations, but pay for unnecessary drugs? In Poor Economics, Abhijit V. Banerjee and Esther Duflo, two award-winning MIT professors, answer these questions based on years of field research from around the world. Called "marvelous, rewarding" by the Wall Street Journal, the book offers a radical rethinking of the economics of poverty and an intimate view of life on 99 cents a day. Poor Economics shows that creating a world without poverty begins with understanding the daily decisions facing the poor.
Book Synopsis The Effects of Economic Adjustment on Poverty in Mexico by : Thomas J. Kelly
Download or read book The Effects of Economic Adjustment on Poverty in Mexico written by Thomas J. Kelly and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-12-07 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this study seeks to explore the effects of economic adjustment and why the classical prescriptions for structural adjustment did not succeed in Mexico, or at best succeeded only partially. It asks why growth was retarded, not accelerated; inequality rose rather than fell; poverty increased rather than declined; informalization of the economy occurred rather than modernization. Mexico’s story needs to be better known and this book is a good place to begin, containing numerous insights and valuable lessons for analysts and policy makers alike.
Book Synopsis The Poor in Latin America During Adjustment by : Paul Glewwe
Download or read book The Poor in Latin America During Adjustment written by Paul Glewwe and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a general overview of the effects of structural adjustment programs on the poor. It turns to a specific country setting, Peru, as a means of illustrating the discussion. The depth of Peru's economic problems makes it likely that the Peruvian economy will have to undergo major adjustments in the near future. Among the options policy makers will consider are : realignment of the various exchange rates, trade liberalization, removal of price distortions, and reduction of government expenditures. The analysis presented here shows how household level data can be used to assess the effect of various policy options on the welfare of the poor. Several facts suggest that correcting many of the distortions affecting Peru's agricultural sector may not directly harm the poor. For Peru's urban sector, the case is more complicated. If food subsidies and taxes were dropped, the net (immediate) effect may well be favorable as the prices of wheat and wheat products, a major staple, would decline substantially. Other government programs, including those related to health and education, could be changed in ways that would benefit the poor, and in some cases, reduce overall public sector expenditures.
Download or read book Failure to Adjust written by Edward Alden and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *Updated edition with a new foreword on the Trump administration's trade policy* The vast benefits promised by the supporters of globalization, and by their own government, have never materialized for many Americans. In Failure to Adjust Edward Alden provides a compelling history of the last four decades of US economic and trade policies that have left too many Americans unable to adapt to or compete in the current global marketplace. He tells the story of what went wrong and how to correct the course. Originally published on the eve of the 2016 presidential election, Alden’s book captured the zeitgeist that would propel Donald J. Trump to the presidency. In a new introduction to the paperback edition, Alden addresses the economic challenges now facing the Trump administration, and warns that economic disruption will continue to be among the most pressing issues facing the United States. If the failure to adjust continues, Alden predicts, the political disruptions of the future will be larger still.
