Book Synopsis The Emergence of Feminism in India, 1850-1920 by : Padma Anagol
Download or read book The Emergence of Feminism in India, 1850-1920 written by Padma Anagol and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grounded in a variety of rich and diverse source materials such as periodicals meant for women and edited by women, song and cookbooks, book reviews and court records, the author of this pioneering study mobilises claims for the existence of an Indian feminism in the nineteenth century. Anagol traces the ways in which Indian women engaged with the power structures-both colonialist and patriarchical-which sought to define them. Through her analysis of Indian male reactions to movements of assertion by women, Anagol shows that the development of feminist consciousness in India from the late nineteenth century to the coming of Gandhi was not one of uninterrupted unilinear progression. The book illustrates the ways in which such movements were based upon a consciousness of the inequalities in gender relations and highlights the determination of an emerging female intelligentsia to remedy it. The author's innovative study of women and crime challenges the notion of passivity by uncovering instances of individual resistance in the domestic sphere. Her study of women's perspectives and participation in the Age of Consent Bill debates clearly demonstrates how the rebellion of wives and their assertion in the colonial courts had resulted in male reaction to reform rather than the current historiographical claims that it was a response purely to threats posed by 'colonial masculinity'. Anagol's investigation of the growth of the women's press, their writings and participation in the wider vernacular press highlights the relationship between symbolic or 'hidden' resistance and open assertion by women.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shrimati Kamaladevi Chattopadhyaya has blazed the trail in a number of fields such as theatre, cooperation and handicrafts. Women’s liberation enthusiasts today would be hard put to find a cause which she had not championed years ago. Hard work and dedication to chosen causes have been her hallmark. She has fought for what she considered right, refusing to allow herself to be fitted into any mould or to compromise her beliefs to please anyone. Dubbed the “supremely romantic figure†of the freedom struggle, she defied the British Government both in India and abroad, winning many spectacular victories. The honours she refused-governorship, ambassadorship and vice-presidential nomination-would make any politicians, mouth water and her journalistic achievements have been of an order to satisfy the most demanding editor. A truly remarkable personality who, perhaps, more than any man in India deserves the label—“a Renaissance man†.
Book Synopsis Married to the empire by : Mary A. Procida
Download or read book Married to the empire written by Mary A. Procida and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Married to the empire, Mary A. Procida provides a new approach to the growing history of women and empire by situating women at the centre of the practices and policies of British imperialism. Rebutting interpretations that have marginalized women in the empire, this book demonstrates that women were crucial to establishing and sustaining the British Raj in India from the "High Noon" of imperialism in the late nineteenth century through to Indian independence in 1947. Using three separate modes of engagement with imperialism – domesticity, violence, and race – Procida demonstrates the many and varied ways in which British women, particularly the wives of imperial officials, created a role for themselves in the empire. Drawing on a wide range of sources, including memoirs, novels, interviews, and government records, the book examines how marriage provided a role for women in the empire, looks at the home as a site for the construction of imperial power, analyses British women's commitment to violence as a means of preserving the empire, and discusses the relationship among Indian and British men and women. Married to the empire is essential reading to students of British imperial history and women's history, as well as those with an interest in the wider history of the British Empire.
