Book excerpt: This book analyzes and explains the ways in which major developing world cities respond to the challenge of urban violence. The study shows how the political projects that cities launch to confront urban violence are shaped by the interaction between urban political economies and patterns of armed territorial control. It introduces business as a pivotal actor in the politics of urban violence, and argues that how business is organized within cities and its linkages to local governments impacts whether or not business supports or subverts state efforts to stem and prevent urban violence. A focus on city mayors finds that the degree to which politicians rely upon clientelism to secure and maintain power influences whether they favor responses to violence that perpetuate or weaken local political exclusion. The book builds a new typology of patterns of armed territorial control within cities, and shows that each poses unique challenges and opportunities for confronting urban violence. The study develops sub-national comparative analyses of puzzling variation in the institutional outcomes of the politics of urban violence across Colombia's three principal cities—Medellin, Cali, and Bogota—and over time within each. The book's main findings contribute to research on violence, crime, citizen security, urban development, and comparative political economy. The analysis demonstrates that the politics of urban violence is a powerful new lens on the broader question of who governs in major developing world cities.

Book excerpt: The Warrior Principal: New Leadership for Urban Schools is a marriage between the Art of War and effective school leadership principles. It describes the mentality and actions school principals need in order to spearhead the process of successfully reforming a failing and/or struggling urban public school. This book also instructs principals on how to deal with resistance caused by change, district- and building-level politics, and ineffective staff members. It also provides a framework for improving staff morale, boosting student achievement, delegating authority, and creating a positive school culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Politics of the Encounter is a spirited interrogation of the city as a site of both theoretical inquiry and global social struggle. The city, writes Andy Merrifield, remains "important, virtually and materially, for progressive politics." And yet, he notes, more than forty years have passed since Henri Lefebvre advanced the powerful ideas that still undergird much of our thinking about urbanization and urban society. Merrifield rethinks the city in light of the vast changes to our planet since 1970, when Lefebvre's seminal Urban Revolution was first published. At the same time, he expands on Lefebvre's notion of "the right to the city," which was first conceived in the wake of the 1968 student uprising in Paris. We need to think less of cities as "entities with borders and clear demarcations between what's inside and what's outside" and emphasize instead the effects of "planetary urbanization," a concept of Lefebvre's that Merrifield makes relevant for the ways we now experience the urban. The city—from Tahrir Square to Occupy Wall Street—seems to be the critical zone in which a new social protest is unfolding, yet dissenters' aspirations are transcending the scale of the city physically and philosophically. Consequently, we must shift our perspective from "the right to the city" to "the politics of the encounter," says Merrifield. We must ask how revolutionary crowds form, where they draw their energies from, what kind of spaces they occur in—and what kind of new spaces they produce.

Research suggests that urban school reforms that connect equitably to broader community improvement efforts are more sustainable and that principals play a pivotal role in leading such efforts. Although the role of the school principal is a front-line leader charged with the execution of policy and legislation, the experience of principal leadership is an area of limited research particularly how the creative leadership of the school principal connects with school transformational improvement efforts. The purpose of this research was to explore and describe the experiences of urban principals, particularly their roles, responsibilities and leadership styles within an era of accountability of student performance outcomes as measured in state test scores. Central to the study was the principal narrations of their experiences as they navigated between policy compliance and creative leadership through the specific context of the Cleveland Plan implementation. In this study, creative leadership is defined as a multi-dimensional and transformational in its integration of distributed, authentic, and adaptive in its response to complex urban environments. It involves a view towards change that steps outside of the existing practices through collaborative, distributed, and authentic leadership to strategically move through a problem-solving framework (Puccio, Mance, & Murdock, 2011). Using a case study design, the research focused on the principal leadership skill set as narrated by principals within a context of a specific period of school reform beginning when the Cleveland Plan was legislated as H.B. 525 in 2012 through 2019 and the issuance of the last full year state report card. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews with principals of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. The research sought to both expand the study of school administration and leadership in new directions and to contribute to the base of research using the actual experiences of urban principals.
