Book Synopsis Political Unions, Popular Politics and the Great Reform Act of 1832 by : N. LoPatin
Download or read book Political Unions, Popular Politics and the Great Reform Act of 1832 written by N. LoPatin and published by Springer. This book was released on 1998-11-16 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first on the creation, development and influence of popular politics, specifically the role of Political Unions, on the Great Reform Act of 1832. Political Unions and the force of public opinion played a vital role in seeing the Reform Bill through Parliament and setting England on the path of peaceful, legislative reform. Their emphasis on representing the 'industrious' classes linked the Unions to the emerging debates - political and socio-economic - in later Victorian Britain and the evolution of British participatory democracy.
Book Synopsis Artisans and Politics in Early Nineteenth-Century London (Routledge Revivals) by : Iorwerth Prothero
Download or read book Artisans and Politics in Early Nineteenth-Century London (Routledge Revivals) written by Iorwerth Prothero and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-10-14 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1979, this book was the first, full-length study of working-class movements in London between 1800 and the beginnings of Chartism in the later 1830s. The leaders and rank and file in these movements were almost invariably artisans, and this book examines the position of the skilled artisan in politics. Starting from the social ideals, outlook and the experience of the London artisan, Dr Prothero describes trade union, political, co-operative, educational and intellectual movements in the first forty years of the century. Setting a scene of alternating growth and contraction in trade, successive hostile governments and the increasing articulation of working-class consciousness the author shows that artisans could be no less militant, radical or anti-capitalist than other groups of working class men.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Noting that working-class writers and editors actively sought to define for themselves the spiritual and political role literature played for an emerging working class, Murphy concludes that while there was no uniform working-class interpretation of literature, working-class journalists conducted a lively and continuing debate about literature, and that their agreements and disagreements show a thriving and evolving aesthetic.
Book Synopsis Political Economy and Industrialism by : Gilles Jacoud
Download or read book Political Economy and Industrialism written by Gilles Jacoud and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-04-05 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French philosopher and economist Saint-Simon (1760–1825) propounded a new political, economic and social order in which the quest for economic efficiency and social justice led to putting the workers at the forefront. On his death, his disciples worked to preserve his thought and developed it in numerous writings. This book explains why the Saint-Simonians could not be content with the existing economic and social order and how they planned to organise society and the role banks were to play in it. It contains a selection of old texts, written by the main Saint-Simonian thinkers, published in the press in French between 1826 and 1831, which show the Saint-Simonian conception of the organisation of society and the place allotted to banks. It is an indispensable reference work in understanding a current of thought which greatly contributed to the industrial expansion of the nineteenth century. This book will be of interest to postgraduate students, economists, historians and philosophers interested in the history of economic thought.

Book Synopsis Early Trade Unionism by : Malcolm Chase
Download or read book Early Trade Unionism written by Malcolm Chase and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once the heartland of British labour history, trade unionism has been marginalised in much recent scholarship. In a critical survey from the earliest times to the nineteenth century, this book argues for its reinstatement. Trade unionism is shown to be both intrinsically important and to provide a window onto the broader historical landscape; the evolution of trade union principles and practices is traced from the seventeenth century to mid-Victorian times. Underpinning this survey is an explanation of labour organisation that reaches back to the fourteenth century. Throughout, the emphasis is on trade union mentality and ideology, rather than on institutional history. There is a critical focus on the politics of gender, on the demarcation of skill and on the role of the state in labour issues. New insight is provided on the long-debated question of trade unions’ contribution to social and political unrest from the era of the French Revolution through to Chartism.
