This book challenges the notion of a centralised and unified China, and outlines how provinces are taking on new economic and political roles, forced upon them by decentralisation. It is the most thorough data on contemporary Chinese provinces available and will be of great interest to researchers and graduate students of politics, economics and business as well as Asian studies.
Book Synopsis Political Economy of Provincial Economic Development Policy : a Case Study of Manitoba, 1970 by : Harold Chorney
Download or read book Political Economy of Provincial Economic Development Policy : a Case Study of Manitoba, 1970 written by Harold Chorney and published by Manitoba : [s.n.]. This book was released on 1970 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence of marked regional economic disparities in Canada has made provincial governments very conscious of their potential role in stimulating provincial economic growth. Where provincial develop- ment policy is committed to growth as a primary goal, it is likely to promote growth at a considerable cost - both opportunity and direct costs to itself. These costs will be increased to the extent that the provincial government is enamoured with economic growth as a societal goal above all other goals (for example improving the welfare of its citizens, eliminating poverty or redistributing income); to the extent that the provincial government is committed to competing with other regions in promoting growth through offering locational incentives to industry; and the lower the province's position on the growth scale to begin with. Given the structure and concentration of ownership in Canada, provinces which attempt to promote their rate of growth under the above conditions will tend to provide risk capital and other major concessions to foreign corporations. Thus provincial development policy is a positive influence in accelerating the rate of location of foreign owned industry in Canada. The Province of Manitoba from 1958 to 1969 adopted this growth policy under these conditions. A study of this period in Manitoba reveals that the consequences outlined above did in fact follow from this policy.

The book argues that it is bureaucratic incentive structure lead to a fragmented and stratified welfare system in China. Using a variety of Chinese- and English-language sources, including central and local government documents, budgetary data, household surveys, media databases, etc., this book covers the development of China’s pensions, health insurance, unemployment insurance, and social assistance programs since the 1990s, with a focus on initiatives since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. Book Synopsis African Policy Innovation and the Political Economy of Public-Private Policy Partnerships by : Olayele, Fred
Download or read book African Policy Innovation and the Political Economy of Public-Private Policy Partnerships written by Olayele, Fred and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2022-06-30 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A core political economy issue in the growth literature is how to structure the relationship between the public and private sectors to ensure optimal outcomes. While conventional arguments on the ability of the private sector to intrinsically generate efficiency gains remain valid, governments’ traditional role of providing an enabling environment to foster private risk taking for capital accumulation is no less important. African Policy Innovation and the Political Economy of Public-Private Policy Partnerships borrows from contemporary theories of policy change and raises some fundamental questions about the political economy of development in Africa. This book examines the current knowledge and research about the role of public-private policy partnerships in the policy innovation discourse. It contributes a comprehensive, cutting-edge analysis vis-à-vis the appropriateness of contemporary policy devices and paradigms, the compatibility of individualistic analytical frameworks with the African philosophy of Ubuntu, the debate on the rise of neoliberalism versus Africa's traditions and values, and the implications of path dependence for the African Renaissance. From local communities and NGOs to African governments and international development agencies, the author advances a multi-stakeholder development policy and programming framework which recognizes Africa's vastly heterogenous economies and societies. Covering topics such as policy diffusion, demographic shifts, inequality, rentier capitalism, industrial transformation, development finance innovations, venture capital ecosystems, tax policy and supply-side economics, ocean finance, the global minimum tax debate, and higher education under disruptive technologies, this premier reference source is an excellent resource for government officials, policymakers, entrepreneurs, business leaders, libraries, students and educators of higher education, researchers, and academicians.
Book Synopsis The Political Economy of Natural Resources and Development by : Paul A. Haslam
Download or read book The Political Economy of Natural Resources and Development written by Paul A. Haslam and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-05 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Political Economy of Resources and Development offers a unique and multidisciplinary perspective on how the commodity boom of the mid-2000s reshaped the model of development throughout Latin America and elsewhere in the developing world. Governments increased taxes and royalties on the resource sector, the nationalization of foreign firms returned to the mainstream economic policy agenda, and public spending on social and developmental goals surged. These trends, often described as resource nationalism, have developed into a strategy for economic development, generated a re-imagining of the state and its institutional possibilities, and created a new but very significant political risk for extractive enterprises. However, these innovations, which constitute the most dramatic change in development policy in Latin America since the advent of neoliberalism, have so far received little attention from either academic or policy-oriented publications. This book explores the reasons behind these policies, and their effects on states, firms, and development trajectories. This text brings together renowned thematic experts to examine the political-economic causes of resource nationalism, as well as its manifestation in six Latin American countries. The causal variables considered by the contributors to this collection include a range of political-economic determinants of policy including commodity prices; the influence of ideology and national politics; ideas about industrial policy; relations between host governments and investors; and how countries respond to opportunities provided by regional initiatives and the new geography of the global economy. This volume is essential reading in development economics, political economy, and Latin American studies, as well as for those who want to understand what economic development means after neoliberalism.
Book Synopsis The New Regional Economies by : William R. Barnes
Download or read book The New Regional Economies written by William R. Barnes and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1998 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The politics and economics of the United States are wedded in the political economy of the nation state and the nationalist economic policies. This `nationalist paradigm' is, however, showing the following signs of fatigue: the role of the nation state is diminishing as the economy globalizes; US national accounting systems are less effective, technology forces change; trading blocs are emerging; there is less control of exchange rates; regional economies are restructuring; and competitive environments are changing. This book proposes that political jurisdictions are not economies but polities, and explores the complex and important economic implications of this thesis.
Book Synopsis Cities and Regions in Crisis by : Martin Jones
Download or read book Cities and Regions in Crisis written by Martin Jones and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new geographical political economy approach to our understanding of regional and local economic development in Western Europe over the last twenty years. It suggests that governance failure is occurring at a variety of spatial scales and an ‘impedimenta state’ is emerging. This is derived from the state responding to state intervention and economic development that has become irrational, ambivalent and disoriented. The book blends theoretical approaches to crisis and contradiction theory with empirical examples from cities and regions.
Book Synopsis Transforming Provincial Politics by : Bryan M. Evans
Download or read book Transforming Provincial Politics written by Bryan M. Evans and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2015-03-27 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past thirty-five years, Canada’s provinces and territories have undergone significant political changes. Abandoning mid-century Keynesian policies, governments of all political persuasions have turned to deregulation, tax reduction, and government downsizing as policy solutions for a wide range of social and economic issues. Transforming Provincial Politics is the first province-by-province analysis of politics and political economy in more than a decade, and the first to directly examine the turn to neoliberal policies at the provincial and territorial level. Featuring chapters written by experts in the politics of each province and territory, Transforming Provincial Politics examines how neoliberal policies have affected politics in each jurisdiction. A comprehensive and accessible analysis of the issues involved, this collection will be welcomed by scholars, instructors, and anyone interested in the state of provincial politics today.

Book Synopsis Local and Regional Development by : Andy Pike
Download or read book Local and Regional Development written by Andy Pike and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 515 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Actors and institutions in localities and regions across the world are seeking prosperity and well-being amidst tumultuous and disruptive shifts and transitions generated by: an increasingly globalised, knowledge-intensive capitalism; global financial instability, volatility and crisis; concerns about economic, social and ecological sustainability, climate change and resource shortages; new multi-actor and multi-level systems of government and governance and a re-ordering of the international political economy; state austerity and retrenchment; and, new and reformed approaches to intervention, policy and institutions for local and regional development. Local and Regional Development provides an accessible, critical and integrated examination of local and regional development theory, institutions and policy in this changing context. Amidst its rising importance, the book addresses the fundamental issues of ‘what kind of local and regional development and for whom?’, its purposes, principles and values, frameworks of understanding, approaches and interventions, and integrated approaches to local and regional development throughout the world. The approach provides a theoretically informed, critical analysis of contemporary local and regional development in an international and multi-disciplinary context, grounded in concrete empirical analysis from experiences in the global North and South. It concludes by identifying what might constitute holistic, inclusive, progressive and sustainable local and regional development, and reflecting upon its limits and political renewal.

Taking Mexico as a case study and weaving in comparisons from Latin America and developed countries, this book explores current trends and policy issues around urbanisation, metropolisation, economic development and city-region governance. Despite their fundamental economic relevance, the analysis and monitoring of metropolitan economies in Mexico and other countries in the Global South under a comparative perspective are relatively scarce. This volume contains empirical analysis based on comparative perspectives with relation to international experiences. It will be of interest to advanced students, researchers and policymakers in urban policy, urban economics, regional studies, economic geography and Latin American studies.
