Book Synopsis Political Economy Of Deng's Nanxun, The: Breakthrough In China's Reform And Development by : John Wong
Download or read book Political Economy Of Deng's Nanxun, The: Breakthrough In China's Reform And Development written by John Wong and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-03-12 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is about the political economy of Deng Xiaoping's Nanxun (tour of South China), which was the most critical phase in China's reform and development since 1978. The first round of Deng's reform resulted in high growth through the 1980s. However, it created a messy half-reformed economy with many problems, including the Tiananmen incident. The immediate aftermath of the Tiananmen was collapse of economic growth and reform deadlock. To break out from this low-level “reform-growth trap”, Deng decided to launch the Nanxun, not just to reignite the reform but also to complete China's march towards a market economy. Looking back, the Nanxun led to the most crucial reform breakthrough, which, in turn, sparked off a dynamic reform-growth-nexus for China's eventual economic take-off.The chapters in this volume were originally “policy reports” on China, meant for the Singapore government. These reports were written based on the information available at that time, and reflected the prevailing political mood. Each chapter is accompanied by a detailed introduction that is aimed at providing a broad background for readers to better understand the Nanxun period. The introduction also serves as a post-evaluation of the events based on new information, and shows how those events have evolved over the years. In combination, these chapters should piece together a reasonably realistic picture of the basic politics and economics of the crucial Nanxun period.

The Nanxun has become a political landmark in the history of the People's Republic of China, much like great events such as the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, and the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown. Deng Xiaoping has left his own legacy for the country. The Nanxun belongs to Deng, just as the 1911 revolution belongs to Sun Yat-sen and the communist revolution to Mao Zedong. In this collection of articles, leading China scholars and experts analyze how the Nanxun has sparked off dynamic economic growth in China and drastically changed the political and social landscape of the country.

Book Synopsis China After Deng Xiaoping by : Willy Wo-Lap Lam
Download or read book China After Deng Xiaoping written by Willy Wo-Lap Lam and published by . This book was released on 1995-08-08 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: China After Deng Xiaoping This book gives bold and thought-provoking answers to the question "What will happen after Deng Xiaoping’s death?" by analysing major political and economic trends in China since the June 4, 1989 crackdown. The intriguing career of patriarch Deng after the Tiananmen Square massacre — and his place in history — is assessed with the help of previously unpublished internal documents and hundreds of interviews with key players. The lively story-telling and incisive judgements are buttressed by generous quotations from the speeches and writings of the politicians who will shape China’s future. China After Deng Xiaoping looks at developments in six crucial areas from 1989 to late 1994, and forecasts their progress into the next decade: a) Deng Xiaoping’s contributions and legacy; b) economic reform, the quasi-capitalist road, and the rules of the game in the socialist market economy; c) the residual influence of the Maoists; d) the expanding role of the People’s Liberation Army; e) political reform and the future of the Chinese Communist Party; f) the post-Deng Xiaoping leadership, tension between Beijing and the regions, and the rise of private entrepreneurs. China After Deng Xiaoping examines the crisis-ridden country that Deng will leave behind. After the June 4 tragedy, Deng made valiant efforts to "mend heaven" by resuscitating economic reform. By early 1995, China seemed on the threshold of integration with the global economic order. However, the political system remains feudal and corrupt. Economic liberalisation has reached a bottleneck. The socio-economic costs of reform are becoming prohibitive unless commensurate steps are taken to modernise the political structure. Will Deng’s anointed successors — led by President Jiang Zemin, Premier Li Peng and Vice-Premier Zhu Rongji — shepherd the country towards a novel phase of reform? Will China take the leap into the international market place? Will the Shanghai Faction led by Jiang and Zhu continue to ride high? What role will the army play? Or has the balance of power been tipped in favor of new forces such as the regional "warlords", the private entrepreneurs and an intelligentsia that has been re-awakened by the information revolution? China After Deng Xiaoping gives clues to the outcome of the slugfest within the Communist party that will break out after the paramount leader’s demise. The book also looks at how the urge to "get rich first" has transformed the mentality of cadres as well as ordinary people. Infinite possibilities — most of them non-Marxist and non-socialist — are beckoning for those who want to embrace the opportunities of the Asia-Pacific century. A new chapter for the world’s longest-continuous civilisation opens as its last patriarch gives up the ghost.

Book Synopsis Zhu Rongji And China's Economic Take-off by : John Wong
Download or read book Zhu Rongji And China's Economic Take-off written by John Wong and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following Deng Xiaoping's economic reform and opening (Gaige Kaifang) policy, China experienced unprecedented high growth for over three decades. Crucial in the process was the role of Zhu Rongji, who was hand-picked by Deng initially as Executive Vice-Premier and later full Premier to carry through the needed reform and manage the critical marketization process through the turbulent 1990s when China's economy suffered many ups and downs. Dubbed as China's 'Economic Czar', Zhu tackled many thorny problems associated with the country's then half-reformed economy ably and effectively, thereby laying the ground for subsequent periods of greater dynamic growth. Zhu was instrumental in preparing China's economy for its final take-off.The chapters in this volume were originally written as 'policy briefings' for the Singapore government from 1997 to 2003 when Zhu was Premier. They cover a wide variety of topics including how he had applied his own way of 'macroeconomic control' (Hongguan Tiaokong), how he went about reforming taxation, foreign exchange and state-owned enterprises, and finally his embrace of capitalism. Each chapter is preceded by a detailed introduction highlighting the main issues and interpreting them from today's perspective based on updated information and additional new research.
Download or read book Market in State written by Yongnian Zheng and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2018-09-06 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the evolving relations between the state and market in the post-Mao reform era, Yongnian Zheng and Yanjie Huang present a theory of Chinese capitalism by identifying and analyzing three layers of the market system in the contemporary Chinese economy. These are, namely, a free market economy at the bottom, state capitalism at the top, and a middle ground in between. By examining Chinese economic practices against the dominant schools of Western political economy and classical Chinese economic thoughts, the authors set out the analytical framework of 'market in state' to conceptualize the market not as an autonomous self-regulating order but part and parcel of a state-centered order. Zheng and Huang show how state (political) principles are dominant over market (economic) principles in China's economy. As the Chinese economy continues to grow and globalize, its internal balance will likely have a large impact upon economies across the world.
Book Synopsis Foreign Policy of China Under Deng Xiaoping by : Priya Suresh
Download or read book Foreign Policy of China Under Deng Xiaoping written by Priya Suresh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book examines, linking two key variables – ‘political leadership’ and ‘foreign policy’ – the role of Deng Xiaoping in China’s foreign policy shift after Mao in politico-strategic and economic domains. The book finds out that guided by his own personality, worldview, experience, pragmatism, belief and style Deng attempted to resolve the long-standing domestic and foreign policy issues. Most importantly, Deng moved from the primacy of politics to economic modernisation which resulted in far-reaching changes in China’s external engagement. The book's central inquiry is to assess the contemporary relevance of Deng’s foreign policy paradigm. It establishes that the relevance of Deng’s policy continues in the present context except for China’s pro-activeness towards issues pertaining to its territorial integrity and sovereignty. Using China’s case, the study advances the framework of understanding pertaining to the role of political leadership in foreign policy.

Book excerpt: In this book, author Min Tang examines the political economy of the China-based leading global Internet giant, Tencent. Tracing the historical context and shaping forces, the book illuminates Tencent’s emergence as a joint creation of the Chinese state and transnational financial capital. Tencent reveals interweaving axes of power on different levels, particularly interactions between the global digital industry and contemporary China. The expansion strategies Tencent has employed—horizontal and vertical integration, diversification and transnationalization—speak to the intrinsic trends of capitalist reproduction and the consistent features of the political economy of communications. The book also pinpoints two emerging and entangling trends— transnationalization and financialization—as unfolding trajectories of the global political economy. Understanding Tencent’s dynamics of growth helps to clarify the complex nature of China’s contemporary transformation and the multifaceted characteristics of its increasingly globalized Internet industry. Book Synopsis Varieties of Capitalism in Asia by : David Hundt
Download or read book Varieties of Capitalism in Asia written by David Hundt and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-02 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book devises an innovative new way of explaining how socioeconomic orders shape capitalism in Asia. Hundt and Uttam go beyond both the ‘varieties of capitalism’ approach, which is mainly used to analyse Western capitalism, and the 'developmental state' thesis, which is the primary framework for analysing capitalism in Asia, and propose a new and innovative approach to the emergence of capitalist systems. Rather than focusing solely or predominantly on the state, they argue, it is necessary to bring society back in to an analysis of capitalism. The authors apply this approach to case studies from across the region: Japan; South Korea and Taiwan; Hong Kong and Singapore; Malaysia and Thailand; and India and China. This volume will appeal to historians, political scientists and economists, as well as policymakers, who are interested in the transformation of the Asian region since World War II.
