Book Synopsis A Protestant Purgatory by : Laurie Throness
Download or read book A Protestant Purgatory written by Laurie Throness and published by Ashgate Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2008 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the role of protestant theology on the penal system of eighteenth-century England. While modern historians of crime admit that religion played an important role in the conception and practice of justice, relatively little work has been done to assess just how these two pillars of early modern society interacted. This study examines the theological background to the Penitentiary Act of 1779--a deeply theological piece of legislation that conflated punishment and hard labour with the ability to redeem sinners. Whereas Catholic theology stressed the role of purgatory after death, this study looks at how the Church of England fostered a sense of earthly purgatory for those convicted by the criminal justice system.

Illustrated by experiences in Ancient Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and Australia, the book examines how colonial powers consciously or not reshaped the law in order to foster the prosperity of homeland manufacturers and entrepreneurs or how local authorities and settlers brought the transplanted law in line with the colonial objectives and the local constraints amid shifting economic, commercial and political realities. Book Synopsis The Rise of the Social Sciences and the Formation of Modernity by : J. Heilbron
Download or read book The Rise of the Social Sciences and the Formation of Modernity written by J. Heilbron and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers one of the first systematic analyses of the rise of modern social science. Contrary to the standard accounts of various social science disciplines, the essays in this volume demonstrate that modern social science actually emerged during the critical period between 1750 and 1850. It is shown that the social sciences were a crucial element in the conceptual and epistemic revolution, which parallelled and partly underpinned the political and economic transformations of the modern world. From a consistently comparative perspective, a group of internationally leading scholars takes up fundamental issues such as the role of the Enlightenment and the French Revolution in the shaping of the social sciences, the changing relationships between political theory and moral discourse, the profound transformation of philosophy, and the constitution of political economy and statistics.

Book Synopsis History of Economic Analysis by : Joseph A. Schumpeter
Download or read book History of Economic Analysis written by Joseph A. Schumpeter and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-03-07 with total page 1310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the time of his death in 1950, Joseph Schumpeter was working on his monumental History of Economic Analysis. Unprecedented in scope, the book was to provide a complete history of economic theory from Ancient Greece to the end of the second world war. A major contribution to the history of ideas as well as to economics, History of Economic Analysis rapidly gained a reputation as a unique and classic work. As well being an economist, Schumpeter was a gifted mathematician, historian, philosopher and psychologist and this is reflected in the multi-disciplinary nature of his great endeavour. Topics addressed include the techniques of economic analysis, contemporaneous developments in other sciences and the sociology of economics. This inclusiveness extends to the periods and individuals who figure in the book. As well as dealing with all of the major economists from Adam Smith to Maynard Keynes, the book considers the economic writings of Plato and Aristotle, of the Medieval Scholastics and of the major European economists. Throughout, Schumpeter perceived economics as a human science and this is reflected in a volume which is lucid and insightful throughout.
