Book excerpt: A reckoning with one of our most beloved art forms, whose past and present are shaped by gender, racial, and class inequities—and a look inside the fight for its future Every day, in dance studios all across America, legions of little children line up at the barre to take ballet class. This time in the studio shapes their lives, instilling lessons about gender, power, bodies, and their place in the world both in and outside of dance. In Turning Pointe, journalist Chloe Angyal captures the intense love for ballet that so many dancers feel, while also grappling with its devastating shortcomings: the power imbalance of an art form performed mostly by women, but dominated by men; the impossible standards of beauty and thinness; and the racism that keeps so many people of color out of ballet. As the rigid traditions of ballet grow increasingly out of step with the modern world, a new generation of dancers is confronting these issues head on, in the studio and on stage. For ballet to survive the twenty-first century and forge a path into a more socially just future, this reckoning is essential.

Book excerpt: Welcome to Grosse Pointe, Michigan, where social rank is determined by the age of your money and the dryness of your martini. The new girl in town, Emma Harris, must prove herself hip to the rigid rules of adolescent conformity. The quest for cool, she discovers, is one long final exam. To pass she must be cruel to be kind (ditching her best friend for the popular crowd), dress to impress (trading her favorite Esprit shirt for three plastic bracelets), and master the art of seduction (puckering up with Mulberry Stain or Peaches 'n' Cream lip gloss). Life is all about making choices -- the right ones. Will Emma's social acrobatics put her on the short list for that coveted country club membership? Will the digits of her zip code pass muster? If her parents split up, will the gossip help or hurt her in the rankings? Grosse Pointe Girl serves as an indispensable road map through the dysfunction privilege brings. So put on your Guess? jeans and your jelly shoes and come along for the ride to the adolescent days that time forgot, but you never will.

Book excerpt: For as long as she can remember, Clare and her family have had a dream: Someday Clare will be a dancer in City Ballet Company. For ten long years Clare has been taking ballet lessons, watching what she eats, giving up friends and a social life, and practicing until her feet bleed—all for the sake of that dream. And now, with the audition for City Ballet Company right around the corner, the dream feels so close. But what if the dream doesn’t come true? The competition for the sixteen spots in the company is fierce, and many won’t make it. Talent, dedication, body shape, size—everything will influence the outcome. Clare’s grandfather says she is already a great dancer, but does she really have what it takes to make it into the company? And if not, then what? Told through passionate and affecting poems in Clare’s own voice, On Pointe soars with emotion as it explores what it means to reach for a dream—and the way that dreams can change as quickly and suddenly as do our lives.

Book excerpt: Welcome to Beulah Crest, a small community overlooking beautiful Crystal Lake. Nobody locks their doors here because they feel safe. Neighbors meet at the old Mouse House in the center of the park for coffee and potluck dinners. The residents of Beulah Crest enjoy the natural beauty of Benzie County and feel lucky to have neighbors who are trusted friends. Trust soon turns to fear and suspicion when one of the residents of Beulah Crest is found brutally murdered on the deck of a neighbor's home. Anger and speculation spread quickly after another resident is poisoned. The whole county gets involved in trying to solve the crimes when people begin posting a mix of fact, fiction, and gossip related to the murders on the Internet. Meanwhile, the sheriff hinders the investigation by his own officers when he tries to pin the murder on migrant farm workers in an effort to guarantee his re-election. Meet some of the interesting residents of Beulah Crest. Any one of them could be the murderer. They include Elsie, the retired librarian, known for her love of gossip and bridge. Elsie's neighbor, Max, is a retired history teacher from nearby Interlochen Arts Academy. Xander, a physics professor from Chicago comes "Up North" on weekends and for the summer. Then there is the social activist, Reverend Hortense Parker and her husband, Derek, who has a small dental practice in Frankfort. Another couple, Herb and Dorothy Cooper, are retired veterinary surgeons from Ohio who are financially embarrassed because of bad investments. Finally, there is the park manager, Ian, who lives in a studio apartment in the Mouse House, Albert the volunteer manager of the Beulah Crest coffee shop, and Ben, the groundskeeper and handyman. Why would one of these people start killing their neighbors?

Book excerpt: Who is the murderer? Is it one of the passengers at Table 29? Perhaps it's one of the other passengers seated in the exclusive first class dining room or maybe one of the crew on board the ship? It might even be one of the passengers in the discounted cabins in tourist class. Listen to the voice inside the mind of the killer as the victims are identified and the murders are planned. All of the eight people seated at Table 29 are potential targets. Meet them, as well as some of the other passengers on the luxury ocean liner. Watch how they come together to support each other after the first murder and continue to do so, throughout the difficult voyage.Meet the physicist who studied theater and his sister, the medical student that was a once a ballerina. Get to know the inquisitive and charming widow and her film industry friends from Hollywood. Then there's the Earl from Dorset and his Geordie husband who are the biggest land developers in England. The President's brother is also on board, as is the Chief Justice and the Bishop. Hear about their interesting lives and see how they become close friends. Then try to guess who will survive and who is the murderer. You'll also meet some of the crew on the ship. Meet the beautiful and decisive captain and some of her senior officers. Also meet the people that serve the world-class food in the elegant Potomac Grill restaurant. All of them have interesting stories and one of them might be the murderer.Follow the unique way the crimes are investigated by the New York Police Department and the FBI, while the ship is still at sea and while the murderer chooses the next victim. Will they solve the case before all of the guests at Table 29 are dead?Explore the fastest ocean liner at sea and get a glimpse of life on board for the passengers and the crew. Feel what it's like to live in the small community of the people on board, as news and gossip about the murder rapidly spread throughout the ship. The ship is named the United States 21, although it is often just called the "21". It is modeled after the famous ocean liner of the mid 20th century that holds the record for the fastest Atlantic passenger ship crossing. Unlike popular cruise ships that serve a mass market and compete on size and amusement park like attractions, the "21" delivers the best food, service, and elegant surroundings, as did its namesake in the 1950's and 60's. The "21" does not shy away from declaring that it offers three classes of service - first class, cabin class, and tourist.Like any cruise ship or ocean liner, the "21" has a cross section of society on board, where wealth, status, culture, and class differences are found. On board the ship, the differences are magnified because of the confined space of the ship. As the tension mounts following the first murder, some of these differences melt away and some do not. The "21" takes advantage of technology. All of the capabilities of the Internet and telecommunications are fully implemented and integrated on board. All passengers and crew have access to complimentary and unlimited ultra high-speed Internet. Passenger can take a six-day journey and not miss a tweet, chat, trade, or business meeting. Of course tweeting, texting, and the use of phones is not permitted in the first class dining room, the Potomac Grill. Will the advanced communications technology enable the police on shore to determine who the murderer is before everyone at Table 29 is dead?If you read this book while on a cruise, be warned. You may find yourself watching the other passengers and the crew, wondering if one of them is planning the next murder at sea.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harper had a plan. It went south. Hand this utterly unique contemporary YA to anyone who loves ballet or is a little too wrapped up in their Plan A. (It's okay to fail, people!) Harper Scott is a dancer. She and her best friend, Kate, have one goal: becoming professional ballerinas. And Harper won’t let anything—or anyone—get in the way of The Plan, not even the boy she and Kate are both drawn to. Harper is a Scott. She’s related to Robert Falcon Scott, the explorer who died racing Amundsen and Shackleton to the South Pole. Amundsen won because he had a plan, and Harper has always followed his model. So when Harper’s life takes an unexpected turn, she finagles (read: lies) her way to the icy dark of McMurdo Station . . . in Antarctica. Extreme, but somehow fitting—apparently she has always been in the dark, dancing on ice this whole time. And no one warned her. Not her family, not her best friend, not even the boy who has somehow found a way into her heart. It will take a visit from Shackleton's ghost--the explorer who didn't make it to the South Pole, but who got all of his men out alive--to teach Harper that success isn't always what's important, sometimes it's more important to learn how to fail successfully. A Kids' Indie Next List Selection "Longo makes Harper a standout character of fire, commitment, and sass." —The Bulletin, Starred Review "A stunning love letter to ballet and San Francisco, Jennifer Longo's (Six Feet Over It) quirky sophomore novel, Up to This Pointe, is the perfect meld of adorable and heart-wrenching." —Shelf Awareness, Starred Review "One of the most breathtaking explorations of navigating heartbreak that I've ever read. This is one for the ages." —Martha Brockenbrough, author of The Game of Love and Death "Longo's book brings the reader intimately into Harper's heartbreak and healing in a way that will speak to readers of all ages." —Anna Eklund, University Book Store, Seattle, WA "Incisively written. Longo makes it easy to commiserate with Harper as she tries to move past disappointment and envision a new path forward." —Publishers Weekly "A moving love letter to dance, dreams, and San Francisco." —Kirkus Reviews "Harper is a well-developed, relatable character. Her inner monologue is witty and dominates most of the novel, giving a unique perspective. . . . A recommended read for determined teens with an interest in following and exploring their dreams." —School Library Journal "Harper’s temporary Antarctic life is evoked with as much vivid, fascinating detail as her 'second home,' the ballet studio. . . . An affecting, memorable examination of disappointment and loss." —The Horn Book Review "Longo's fabulous depiction of McMurdo and the winter residents captures the beauty, humor, and danger of such an isolated existence. An adventure story with lots of heart." —Booklist

Book excerpt: Please note that purchase of this hard copy manual does not give you access to the online video course. This must be purchased separately on www.theballetblog.com. Many dancers struggle with achieving a nice line of their foot and ankle, and will often do anything to make it better. Unfortunately, many of the things that dancers do to try to improve their pointe range are potentially harmful. This includes things like stretching your feet under a piano, and using any kind of foot stretching device. In my opinion, pushing your body in the direction you want it to go is usually the slowest and most dangerous way of getting there, and this definitely applies when working with pointe range. Forcefully stretching feet usually stretches what is already mobile, rather than targeting the elements that are actually restricting your range, so will often not give you the result you are after. If you currently have any pain when pointing your feet, I definitely recommend an assessment with a qualified health professional before commencing the program. If you experience any pain with any of the exercises, please discontinue that exercise immediately, and seek help. Often pushing into pain will make it worse, so I DO NOT support the "No Pain, No Gain" theory. This does not work when working on pointe range! To really improve your pointe range and achieve your ultimate potential it is essential to understand exactly where pointe range comes from, and where you are restricted. Every foot is different, and so the techniques that will improve it are different. When I teach dancers the exercises in this program, I recommend that they just do one foot initially, and assess the foot by doing some double leg rises in between each technique. This allows you to work out which techniques really work for you, so that you can refine the process to your individual requirements. As you discover each element that makes your foot feel good, star it on your chart, so that you can work out the most efficient, yet most effective program for your feet. One of the most important elements on achieving your ultimate pointe range is your ability to use it, so please make sure to progressively work on your strength with the exercises at the end of the program. Most people have more range than they can use, so I always focus on strengthening someone's current range before worrying too much about increasing it. You may likely find that as your strength improves - so does your range!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ballet dancers have the strongest, most beautiful, probably the most envied bodies in the world. How do they stay slender and willowy while maintaining the extraordinary energy it takes to perform night after night? Can a nondancer or an amateur attain a dancer's figure and a dancer's vitality? And keep it? Here, in The Dancers' Body Book, the legendary ballerina Allegra Kent discloses the health, weight-watching, and relaxation secrets of some of the world's greatest ballet dancers -- from Suzanne Farrell and Fernando Bujones to Darci Kistler and Madame Alexandra Danilova. Combining them with two well-balanced diets -- one to lose weight by and one to live by -- and an exercise regimen that can be tailored to the individual, she provides a fabulous fitness program for everyone who longs to be slimmer, healthier, and more energetic. Fourteen varied menus incorporate delicious recipes from the dancers themselves (such as Jacques D'Amboise's Wonderful Dinner Salad and Dierdre Carberry's Almond Meringue Kisses), along with calorie guides and advice on how to create additional menus using your own favorite dishes. Helpful discussions on sports and exercise systems -- ranging from jogging and swimming to the sophisticated "Pilates" workout -- are also included, and in a special chapter entitled "A Healthy Outlook," the dancers talk candidly on such issues as smoking, anorexia, vitamins, doctors, massage, junk foods, fad diets, and injuries. Dancers take meticulous care of all their equipment because training and performance depend on it. Of course, the most essential piece of equipment, the body, needs the most care of all, and that is what this book is about: how to take care of the world's greatest machine. Allegra Kent joined the New York City Ballet at the age of fifteen and was a principal dancer with the company for thirty years, during which time she created a number of starring roles in ballets by Balanchine and Robbins. The mother of two daughters and a son, she is also the author of Allegra Kent's Water Beauty Book.
