Book Synopsis Edward Lloyd and His World by : Sarah Louise Lill
Download or read book Edward Lloyd and His World written by Sarah Louise Lill and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-01 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publisher Edward Lloyd (1815-1890) helped shape Victorian popular culture in ways that have left a legacy that lasts right up to today. He was a major pioneer of both popular fiction and journalism but has never received extended scholarly investigation until now. Lloyd shaped the modern popular press: Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper became the first paper to sell over a million copies. Along with publishing songs and broadsides, Lloyd dominated the fiction market in the early Victorian period issuing Gothic stories such as Varney the Vampire (1845-7) and other 'penny dreadfuls', which became bestsellers. Lloyd's publications introduced the enduring figure of Sweeney Todd whilst his authors penned plagiarisms of Dickens's novels, such as Oliver Twiss (1838-9). Many readers in the early Victorian period may have been as likely to have encountered the author of Pickwick in a Lloyd-published plagiarism as in the pages of the original author. This book makes us rethink the early reception of Dickens. In this interdisciplinary collection, leading scholars explore the world of Edward Lloyd and his stable of writers, such as Thomas Peckett Prest and James Malcolm Rymer. The Lloyd brand shaped popular taste in the age of Dickens and the Chartists. Edward Lloyd and his World fills a major gap in the histories of popular fiction and journalism, whilst developing links with Victorian politics, theatre and music.
Book Synopsis The Urbanism of Frank Lloyd Wright by : Neil Levine
Download or read book The Urbanism of Frank Lloyd Wright written by Neil Levine and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first book devoted to Frank Lloyd Wright's designs for remaking the modern city. Stunningly comprehensive, The Urbanism of Frank Lloyd Wright presents a radically new interpretation of the architect’s work and offers new and important perspectives on the history of modernism. Neil Levine places Wright’s projects, produced over more than fifty years, within their historical, cultural, and physical contexts, while relating them to the theory and practice of urbanism as it evolved over the twentieth century. Levine overturns the conventional view of Wright as an architect who deplored the city and whose urban vision was limited to a utopian plan for a network of agrarian communities he called Broadacre City. Rather, Levine reveals Wright’s larger, more varied, interesting, and complex urbanism, demonstrated across the span of his lengthy career. Beginning with Wright’s plans from the late 1890s through the early 1910s for reforming residential urban neighborhoods, mainly in Chicago, and continuing through projects from the 1920s through the 1950s for commercial, mixed-use, civic, and cultural centers for Chicago, Madison, Washington, Pittsburgh, and Baghdad, Levine demonstrates Wright’s place among the leading contributors to the creation of the modern city. Wright’s often spectacular designs are shown to be those of an innovative precursor and creative participant in the world of ideas that shaped the modern metropolis. Lavishly illustrated with drawings, plans, maps, and photographs, this book features the first extensive new photography of materials from the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation Archives. The Urbanism of Frank Lloyd Wright will serve as one of the most important books on the architect for years to come.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) was an English poet, literary critic and philosopher who, with his friend William Wordsworth, was a founder of the Romantic Movement in England and a member of the Lake Poets. He wrote the poems The Rime of the Ancient Mariner and Kubla Khan, as well as the major prose work Biographia Literaria. His critical work, especially on Shakespeare, was highly influential, and he helped introduce German idealist philosophy to English-speaking culture. He coined many familiar words and phrases, including suspension of disbelief. He was a major influence on Emerson, and American transcendentalism. Coleridge is one of the most important figures in English poetry. His poems directly and deeply influenced all the major poets of the age. He was known by his contemporaries as a meticulous craftsman who was more rigorous in his careful reworking of his poems than any other poet, and Southey and Wordsworth were dependent on his professional advice. Book Synopsis Frank Lloyd Wright by : Penny Fowler
Download or read book Frank Lloyd Wright written by Penny Fowler and published by Pomegranate. This book was released on 2002 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Book Description: Frank Lloyd Wright's mammoth contribution to architecture is universally acknowledged, but his graphic work has been largely overlooked in the existing literature about this seminal architect. His designs for typography, books, posters, murals, and magazines have remained relatively obscure, even though they are key components of his oeuvre. Penny Fowler has thoroughly investigated the artist's innovative graphic work and placed it within the context of various aesthetic movements, from Arts and Crafts to Bauhaus and De Stijl. Wright's publications - including The House Beautiful and An Autobiography - his delineations for the Wasmuth Portfolio, and his mural designs for Midway Gardens and the Imperial Hotel are explored, and one chapter is devoted to the festive covers Wright created for Liberty magazine. (Wright's designs were considered far too radical from the current trends, so Liberty turned them down.) Now this important part of the artist's work has been succinctly reviewed and amply illustrated. The ten chapters - carefully annotated with endnotes - explore Wright's foray into the world of graphic design, including book design; his influence by international sources; and his visits to Japan and Europe. Exhibitions and publications are included in the last chapter. Frank Lloyd Wright: Graphic Artist suggests that the man's genius simply knew no bounds.

Download or read book The Complete Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge (Illustrated Edition) written by Samuel Taylor Coleridge and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-11-21 with total page 6021 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complete Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge (Illustrated Edition) is a comprehensive collection of the influential English poet's writings. Known for his innovative use of language and deep symbolic imagery, Coleridge's works often explore themes of nature, imagination, and the supernatural. This edition includes a wide range of his poems, essays, and literary criticism, showcasing his mastery of the Romantic style and his profound impact on the literary landscape of the 19th century. Samuel Taylor Coleridge was a key figure in the Romantic movement and a close friend of William Wordsworth. His own struggles with addiction and mental health issues informed much of his writing, leading to a complex and introspective body of work. His contributions to English literature continue to be studied and appreciated for their depth and complexity. I highly recommend The Complete Works of Samuel Taylor Coleridge (Illustrated Edition) to anyone interested in Romantic poetry, 19th-century literature, or the intersection of philosophy and creativity. This collection offers a thorough overview of Coleridge's oeuvre and is essential reading for scholars and fans of his work.
