At The Lombard Court. about fifty years before Columban's arrival in Italy the last wave of the Volkerwanderung--the Migration of the Nations--had swept over the Peninsula. The story of the Lombard conquest is a story of blood and iron. The pages of Paul Warnefrid,1 the historian of the Lombards, read at times like fragments of an epic poem, so full are they of deeds of prowess and wanton bloodshed, of crime and vengeance.
