Book excerpt: The Three Maries pamphlets published in Paris by the celebrated humanist scholar Jacques Lefèvre d'Etaples appeared between 1517 and 1519, and are virtually his only venture into independent authorship. These four short Latin texts investigated the traditions of the Magdalen and the sisters of the Virgin, and the calculation of the triduum , or three days and nights between the Crucifixion and the Resurrection. Written in a spirit of profound piety, they nevertheless challenged notions of authority and powerful established devotional cults, at the very moment when Luther was mounting his own challenge to orthodoxy, and gave rise to a high-profile controversy which anticipated the response to Luther. This edition presents Lefèvre's Latin texts together with an English translation and an extensive introduction which situates the controversy in its contemporary cultural context, and thus throws new light on Lefèvre's exegesis and his distinctive Christian humanism. Latin and English text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The final two volumes in the CWE contain an edition and translation of Erasmus's poetry. For Erasmus scholars this work affords the first opportunity to evaluate and analyse Erasmus' poems in English. And for those interested in Renaissance and Reformation poetry in general, these offer an intriguing look at the work of one of the towering figures of the period writing in a genre that was, for him, unusual. The annotations include a path-breaking commentary piece by Harry Vredeveld on Erasmus' most famous poem, `Poem on the Trouble of Old Age.' Another important feature is the appearance of the original Latin of each poem alongside the English translation. Volumes 85 and 86 of the Collected Works of Erasmus series – Two-volume set.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The particular interest of Professor Spitz has been the close relationship and synergy between humanism and religious reform in the transformation of European culture in the 16th century. Within the general cultural and intellectual context of the Renaissance and Reformation movements, the present volume focuses on Luther and German humanism; a subsequent collection looks more particularly at the place of education and history in the thought of the time. The articles here discuss Luther's imposing knowledge of the classics, his attitudes towards learning, the religious and patriotic interests of the humanists, and the role of a younger generation of humanists in the Reformation. Also included is a far-reaching appraisal of the impact of humanism and the Reformation on Western history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Satire, as the concept was understood in the sisteenth century, covered any sort of commentary on personal or social behaviour or values. The six works collected in these two volumes are among the most important examples of Erasmus' satire, in the sixteenth-century sense of the word, and, in some cases, judged by modern standards as well. they reveal a great deal, not only about Erasmus' attitudes to the moral questions of his time, but also about the circumstances of his own life. These satires reflect aspect of the religious, political, social, and military conflicts of the time and the qualities that enabled Erasmus to articulate them: great intelligence, remarkable shrewdness, deep sensitivity, spectacular ability, and a boundless capacity for staying cool. Volumes 27 and 28 of the Collected Works of Erasmus series - Two-volume set.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Like the editions of Basel (Froben, 1538-1540) and Leiden (Van der Aa, 1703-1706) the Amsterdam edition of the complete works of Erasmus of Rotterdam is arranged according to the division into nine ordines (categories) which Erasmus himself laid down for the posthumous publication of his collected works. Each ordo corresponds to a specific literary or thematic category within Erasmus' oeuvre, in the following manner: I -- Writings on philological and educational questions II -- Proverbs and sayings (Adagia) III -- Correspondence IV -- Writings on moral questions V -- Writings relating to religious instruction VI -- The Latin translation of the New Testament, the Edition of the Greek text and annotations VII -- Paraphrases of the New Testament VIII -- Writings relating to Church Fathers (including several translations from Greek) IX -- Apologies. EACH VOLUME of the Amsterdam edition contains one or more works by Erasmus and is indicated by a Roman numeral, which refers to an ordo, followed by an Arabic numeral, by which the volumes within each ordo are numbered. For example ASD I-3 contains the Colloquia (discussions, colloquies). Erasmus's correspondence (ordo III) is available in the edition of P. S. Allen, H. M. Allen and H. W. Garrod (12 vols., Oxford 1906-1958), and has for this reason not been included in the Amsterdam edition. For more information visit also the journal Erasmus Studies, (formerly called Erasmus of Rotterdam Society Yearbook) ( at: http://www.brill.com/ERAS ( also via http://booksandjournals.brillonline.com/content/journals/18749275 ). Desiderius Erasmus (Rotterdam, ca. 1466-Basel, 1536) enjoyed in his own lifetime an international reputation as a scholar and literary figure. His works (which were all written in Latin) cover the full range of letters, ethics and religion (cf. the ordines in his Opera omnia). In his own day and in succeeding centuries his writings have been frequently reprinted, in Latin as well as in French, German, English, Italian, Dutch and other translations. Publisher's note.
