Book excerpt: Poetry. Women's Studies. LGBTQIA Studies. Annette C. Boehm's new book, THE APIDICTOR TAPES, rather than concentrating on the hackneyed hum of things as so much of recent poetry does, homes in on particulars. Each poem is fused by a precise imagery one seldom sees these days. As Boehm says in 'The Glass Transition, ' every bone in the body is 'a fulgurite, seeded by lightning.' That is just how tightly fused every poem in the collection stands. Her language will leave you chilled with its 'perfect clarity' of image and meaning--and with no abstractions marring its brilliance.--Jim Barnes From an elegiac 'translation' of the Narwhal, to sharp-witted interrogations of social cues, to poems that interrogate an era of school shootings, drones, and robots, the poems and personae of THE APODICTOR TAPES range and explode from their beautiful concision. Annette C. Boehm is an extraordinary poet whose imagination and lyrical control are brought in gorgeous tension through crystalline images and vital turns. Each poem in this collection is a surprise, an arrow, an angled truth.--Rebecca Morgan Frank In this fine new collection, Annette C. Boehm brings to the pages a powerful aesthetic sensibility, married to a decidedly curious and scientific inclination. She has an ear for the sounds of natural and mechanical beasts--the book resounds with 'click-trains' and static, murmur and buzz, often in the service of exploring what it means to know, what it means to have and manipulate information. She writes fluidly of the fluidity of many things, which by a 'strange alchemy' equals human fragility, and also beauty. The book surprises on every page, exhibiting the 'strange alchemy' of poetry itself that only the best poets are able to accomplish.--Sidney Wade

Book excerpt: "These two hard-to-come-by texts reveal that the H.D. we know--the poet of exquisite, erudite, allusive imagist or modernist poems--chose to live through the experience of WWII London and to share with her fellow Londoners the hardships and anxieties of a city under attack."--Demetres Tryphonopoulos, editor of Majic Ring "Fascinating reading. Debo's introduction and precise scholarly edition are not simply useful but will also change our minds about some of the other post-war works now available."--Cynthia Hogue, coeditor of The Sword Went Out to Sea This volume presents two rare works by the modernist writer H.D.: Within the Walls, a collection of fourteen short stories, and What Do I Love?, a set of three long poems. Written during World War II in London, where H.D. chose to stay despite offers of refuge in the United States, the stories and poems recount her experiences during the Blitz. These texts capture the essence of war-torn London from the perspective of a woman with her boots on the ground. Annette Debo's nuanced introduction sets the cultural scene for these works. She positions the literature in three contexts: H.D.'s personal life, the story of women civilians at war, and the international history of World War II. Debo helps us comprehend a time and place that transformed "H.D. Imagiste" into the bold war writer evinced in this volume and opens our eyes to the impact of these war experiences on H.D.'s better known works.

Book excerpt: A Finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Poetry A stunning new collection by the award-winning young poet and translator Like, that currency of social media, is a little word with infinite potential; it can be nearly any part of speech. Without it, there is no simile, that engine of the lyric poem, the lyre’s note in the epic. A poem can hardly exist otherwise. In this new collection, her most ambitious to date, A. E. Stallings continues her archeology of the domestic, her odyssey through myth and motherhood in received and invented forms, from sonnets to syllabics. Stallings also eschews the poetry volume’s conventional sections for the arbitrary order of the alphabet. Contemporary Athens itself, a place never dull during the economic and migration crises of recent years, shakes off the dust of history and emerges as a vibrant character. Known for her wry and musical lyric poems, Stallings here explores her themes in greater depth, including the bravura performance Lost and Found, a meditation in ottava rima on a parent’s sublunary dance with daily-ness and time, set in the moon’s Valley of Lost Things.

An intimate glimpse of a world shattered by stroke, in which each poem not only illuminates but reimagines life with hope and acceptance. Any parent who has watched a beloved child struggle with a medical disaster, or suffering intractable drug dependency will easily recognize and relate to the sadness, grief, guilt, the struggle to understand, and to help when one is often helpless. Through a succinct poetic exploration, readers will be heartened by the promise of survival, the faith in science, the mystery of the human body and, most of all, the courage that a gravely disabled child can bestow upon a parent.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER * NAMED A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR BY NPR ??“To read Maggie Smith is to embrace the achingly precious beauty of the present moment.” —Time “A captivating collection from a wise, accessible poet.” —People From the award-winning poet and bestselling author of You Could Make This Place Beautiful, Keep Moving, and Good Bones, a stunning poetry collection that celebrates the beauty and messiness of life. With her breakout bestseller Keep Moving, Maggie Smith captured the nation with her “meditations on kindness and hope” (NPR). Now, with Goldenrod, the award-winning poet returns with a powerful collection of poems that look at parenthood, solitude, love, and memory. Pulling objects from everyday life—a hallway mirror, a rock found in her son’s pocket, a field of goldenrods at the side of the road—she reveals the magic of the present moment. Only Maggie Smith could turn an autocorrect mistake into a line of poetry, musing that her phone “doesn’t observe / the high holidays, autocorrecting / shana tova to shaman tobacco, / Rosh Hashanah to rose has hands.” Slate called Smith’s “superpower as a writer” her “ability to find the perfect concrete metaphor for inchoate human emotions and explore it with empathy and honesty.” The poems in Goldenrod celebrate the contours of daily life, explore and delight in the space between thought and experience, and remind us that we decide what is beautiful.

This book was released on 2011-01-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The poet Hilda Doolittle (H.D.) came on the literary scene in the 1910s as a young American expatriate living in England. Her early lyric poems, in Sea Garden, helped launch the free verse movement known as imagism. Her work as a whole, spanning five decades, includes long narrative poems, novels, memoirs, and translations. Her experience of the two world wars in Europe is felt throughout her oeuvre, much of which focuses on the power and destructiveness of war. Other recurring topics are ancient models of civilization, comparative mythology, and female deities suppressed in the modern era.Since the 1970s, H.D.'s poetry and prose have appeared regularly on undergraduate and graduate syllabi, in courses ranging from American or British modernism and gender and sexuality studies to literature of war and classical literature and mythology. Yet her work—complex and densely allusive—can be difficult for students to comprehend and for instructors to teach. This volume aims to assist instructors in helping their students navigate the intricacies of H.D.'s work and overcome some of the frustration of deciphering modern poetry. The first part, "Materials," presents resources useful to instructors of H.D.'s work, and the second part, "Approaches," offers specific ways to teach her wide-ranging corpus. Contributors describe courses that teach H.D. in the context of modernism, alongside such writers as Ezra Pound, T. S. Eliot, and Gertrude Stein. Others follow the themes of myth and religion in her long epic poems Helen in Egypt and Trilogy and her autobiographical work The Gift. H.D.'s analysis with Freud and her subsequent memoir of the experience find their place in a course on critical theory. Many instructors teach H.D. through the lens of sexuality, feminism, or race; others use interdisciplinary approaches that focus on H.D.'s engagement with film.
